Yes it will

you have no idea what kind of sponsorships they can get

after ten years it will be financially stable
what about memberships, gate takings, the ridiculously overpriced merchandise clubs sell, how many people in PNG are paying for a TV subscription to watch them? remember we are talking about a very poor nation here or are the good people of Cairns all going to foot the bill lol

Heck Bulldogs can only achieve $13mill total Football club operations and need $5mill top up from pokies to keep the doors open.
a PNG club would be lucky to reach a half of that. If Aus govt is serious they need to be covering the $18mill grant and the $10mill plus club revenue they wont be making. And some sugar for NRL. Its well over $30mill a year investment needed to make a Cairns based PNG side viable.

Why I have serious doubts it will go anywhere. UNLESS NRL gets creative and bases them in Wellington as the Pacifica Bears. If NS have the smarts and capability to make a multi nation club work is highly questionable though.

Obviously with their currency not a huge earner

what they lose in 2 or 3 million in gate revenue can be made up elsewhere

You don’t think that maybe the Australian government’s support for the team and appropriate support by big business interests might cater for some of if not nearly all of this funding? It’s always easy to say no isn’t it?

Why not

you don’t even know how much they are funding them

or any idea what revenue they can generate
In the grand scheme of things $30mill a year to Aus govt is drop in the ocean, but for 20 years? Thats unlikely.
Thats why Id base them in Wellington and if must have Bears involved. Its the only way the club has any long term future.

Do you have any idea what the annual aid budget australia has for png

This is what they give png each year already

I know Albo is genuinely a big League fan but like someone else said on here, this just wouldn't go down well with voters, especially from AFL states.

So if he pulls it off then it’s a goer?

because he is the one pushing for it

Do you have any idea the difference politically between funding a professional sports club and giving money for health, security, food and running water?

It’s going to be dressed up as increased aid to png because of China

maybe you should leave the politics to albo and just focus. on whether the arlc should turn down between 150 and 200 million of govt money into rugby league

TB I dont think anyone cares. Rednecks will always hate foreign aid, AFl fans will never be happy to see money spent on rival sports and the vast majority wont even know let alone care once the first flurry of news is over with. He'll spin it under national security and keeping the commies out of the region and thatll be that.

I'm more interested in how we build a club that actually makes sense, works and has some future beyond govt funding which wont go forever.
Just the idea you can have one club representing multiple nations and based in a totally different nation to any of them seems unlikely to work.
