Amusement value. We've copped this shit for years, it's very satisfying to throw it back in the Bullcheats hypocritical faces.

That's easy. Mason.

Thats true i guess, id probably be doing the same if i supported the Roosters lol.

William Hopoate is also on 800k apparently when he returns in 2014. Does he tick the same boxes for the Eels? Why are people ignoring the significant rise of the salary cap...

Salary cap is likely to go up by $1-1.5mill imo. That means that players on $800k will be the marquee player at the club and clubs will only be able to carry two at the most at that salary level. Question remains is SBW marquee player material in terms of returns from bums on seats, silverware and attraction to sponsors?

To avoid a chickens before they are hatched scenario maybe?

I for one would like to see SBW back playing his 10 to 12 games a season, but can also understand people's apprehension.

I don't think even the most optimistic supporter would expect that the salary cap is going to double with the new TV deal, yet $800K (if correct) would be twice the salary that most top players are on now.

If he is on the field, SBW will be a marquee player, and I'm sure fans of Easts and fans of other teams would come to see him in action or see their team go against a great forward. Roosters wouldn't have anyone over 450k and if the Cowboys can hold together a competitive team with Thurston on 700k in the current salary cap environment then I'm certain that the Roosters can also field a strong team with SBW on 800k with the salary cap rise and third party arrangements.
What? When have we argued that we 'steal' less players?

I think we're quite aware that the Roosters (over the past decade) would probably be at the top, who has said otherwise?
Enough said.

I'm optimistic that the salary cap will rise dramatically regardless of the outcome of the TV deal, and the ones negotiating the deal would know the details better than anyone at the moment.

Perth Red, I think SBW is pretty much the definition of marquee player, despite his dubious injury record and f**ked attitude/management. I would say it is possible, if not fairly likely that he ticks at least 2 of those boxes.

JT is on about $500K and has been one of the best players in the game for 5 seasons.

SBW hasn't played league in years.

Purely from a business sense is $800k a good investment? Will he
A) Bring more fans through the gate
B) Make Roosters a GF team
C) Entice more corporates on board

Not sure he really ticks any of those boxes that strongly so $800k for an ageing forward with injury prone history and a lot of baggage seems somewhat of a bad investment.

I think the 800k is right, given the rise in salary cap and that the 3rd party deals the only question I have is over the 5 year contract.

A 5 year contract and he's an ageing forward, a 3 year contract and whoever signs him gets him in his peak (27-30).

The Queensland and Australian halfback had fielded a significant offer from French rugby club Biarritz but opted to remain in the NRL for a further three years on a deal estimated to be worth about $2 million.

2 million / 3 years = 500k

Imo no one, except the likes of Fittler, Fitzgibbon, pre-injury Mini (and that sorta backfired) deserves a 5 year contract. Top players and club stalwarts. Not blow-ins with shit attitudes. Dangerous territory if that turns out to be true.

2 million in 3 years was his contract. No doubt his next contract with the higher salary cap will see him get even more.

Whats going to happen to guys that have signed multi-year contracts in the last year for much less than what the new "market" value.

For example if I was Gallen I would say, Fme if SBW is going to get $800k for 10 or so games a year, Im worth at least 3/4 of that, if not twice that.

Are we going to see threats of walkouts, strike action etc?

A lot of players have clauses to get a percentage of the rises if/when they occur. If not then they should be blaming their player managers...

Thats why some players are waiting until the new details of the Salary Cap are announced before negotiating.

A significant rise in the salary cap is expected to accompany the improved agreement, but the player transfer marker is expected to be paralysed until exact figures are known later this year.

And the others who signed lengthy contracts knew exactly what they were sacrificing.

For "about" 2 million. I believe he is on about $500K as far as the salary cap is concerned with about $150 or so in third party payments. ($1.95M

$800K still makes that look sick.

And how do you know none of SBW's is third party?

IM CERTAIN some of it is. Id still reckon a large chunk of it is salary cap though. (Id reckon more than 80% of it)

Its still $150K more than one of the games best players and probably $300 to 400K than a Gall, Benji etc.

Could be all piss and wind anyway, this is about the 100th rumuor that he was coming back to the NRL.

Id also be reluctant to bank on a big cap increase, our game DESERVES a massive TV increase, but in this current econmic climate its not guaranteed.

If anyone would know about the potential salary cap increase, it would be Gyngell right? I know 800k is overs in the current salary cap climate, but I have faith that if it does go through it will be a good deal.
