Clearly you do have a problem with it. It's a plot point, creates conflict and actually says alot about both characters.

No doubt.

Generally speaking though kiddie sex is the biggest no-no going, and any TV show that presents it in something other than an SVU "omg we gotta get this sick sonofabitch" kinda way is treading water with the censors

Personally I find the fact that they actually showed the underage character topless to be pretty gratuitous and disturbing, given that what they were showing was an act of statutory rape. Surely you can see that eroticising sex crime is gonna create issues.

You wouldn't want your impressionable 13yo daughter watching it would you? (If you had one that is...) Is the world getting worse? Is it inevitable that kids growing up these days are going to do party drugs, enjoy multiple sex partners, get on the piss at night clubs at every chance and go home the following morning (maybe)?

When did it become cool to have no self esteem?

You may have a point if he continued to root her after he found her age out, but he didn't. ie acknowledging what he did was wrong. At the time, noone knew it was an act of statutory rape either, meaning if they did censor that one, after showing about 3 other sex scenes. The point would have become obvious

When did youth experimenting and enjoying themselves automatically mean they have no self esteem?

But the character is 16 which I think is the equivalent of a 14 year old character in an Aus/NZ show (2 years underage).

Depends what state you are in. In South Australia, the AOC is 17. In some states of the US the age is 14,15,16 or 17. Texas and Hawaii are the 2 states in the US where you can do a 14-year old.

Displaying an ostensibly underaged character as sexually attractive is the essence of child porn, is it not? Probably the sort of thing best left for an arthouse film or something.

It's only child porn if the actor is in fact underage.

Same as Lolita, and many other movies and TV shows have underage characters screwing older characters. And in some like Lolita that actor was also underage.

about to acquire the 4th ep today. i think the fact that it chooses to break these conventions is what makes it as appealing as it is.

you should look things up before posting bullsh*t http://www.coolnurse.com/consent.htm

So should you El - http://teenadvice.about.com/library/weekly/qanda/blageofconsentchart.htm

Look at Hawaii in that page and on yours. 14 on that link; 16 on yours.

But I didn't look it up. It's common knowledge that Hawaii, Texas and Canada are the lowest age-of-consent in North America with all being 14 (although in Texas you have to be married to your partner. If you're not married the age is 17)

And I didn't know about South Carolina and Iowa, but that link I posted shows in South Carolina and Iowa you can do a 14yo if she has her parents permission. Without it the law is 16(South Carolina) or 18(Iowa).

AS someone else pointed out, in the episode he doesn't know that she's 16 at the time he bangs her (and she certainly doesn't look that age- might have to do with the fact she is almost 22 in real life!) When he DOES find out how old she really is he is like "Oh f**K!" I mean, who HASN'T been there? I had that exact feeling after I hooked up with this chick on NYE!

Don't you think it will be pedo's who know about law changes?

You obviously keep up-to-date so you can see what age is the youngest possible you can get.

Why would someone who isn't interested in young teenage girls check the laws every day to see if they've changed?

no, i used google. you claim to have intricate knowledge of where you can root young girls

So you think breaking the convention against showing statutory rape is appealing?

Funny how El D and Razor are trading pedo barbs because of their knowledge of age of consent laws yet don't seem to have any issue with showing a character 2 years under the legal age doing it/being victimised.

'Tis very intriguing is all.

Victimised?

she was the one who started it

how is she the victim?

El D my friend, in civilised societies we have age of consent laws

It is illegal to have sex with someone under the age of consent. This is known as statutory rape. The perpetrators of statutory rape are often (not entirely accurately, but nevertheless they are) referred to as "paedophiles".

I'm afraid "she started it" is rarely a successful defence.
