MELBOURNE could have to continue their premiership defence without Cameron Smith after the Test skipper was at the centre of a grapple tackle furore last night. Referee Shayne Hayne penalised Smith for a grapple tackle on Bronco second-rower Sam Thaiday at Suncorp Stadium in the 51st minute of a spiteful final.
If the video review panel charges Smith tomorrow, he could be rubbed out for up to two matches, ruling him out for the season.
Smith pleaded guilty to a grapple tackle earlier this year and escaped suspension, but the incident left him with 93 carry-over points. If the Test star is charged and takes another early plea, that will earn him an additional 211 points. That would put Smith out of next Friday night's big semi-final against Cronulla as well as the grand final in two weeks - if the Storm get there.
Smith is almost certain to fight the charge so he can play as the Storm try to defend their title.
And the Storm's problems don't end there - back-rower Jeremy Smith could also be charged with a "chicken wing'' - from the same tackle on Thaiday.
On the tackle, Cameron Smith said: "I saw on the replay that my arm was up around his head.
"I don't think there was any intent involved. I didn't try and twist or choke him.''
The tackle resulted in a flare-up as Thaiday resented his treatment, with players rushing in from all sides, several with fists flying.
Once order was finally restored, Hayne cautioned Smith and awarded the Broncos a penalty
