I cant really understand a contract term longer than 2-3 for any player these days. Its just too big a risk. What if the bloke has chronic injury issues over the next 5 years? If it was Johns or Langer I could see why the risk was worth it...but campese?

Yes Nail on the head comment.

Not really. Canberra have been plagued by bringing players into first grade only to see them head off at the first chance to cash in on the Sydney lifestyle, rep chances and subsequent endorsement deals etc.... If there is one team that 5yr deal makes sense for it is Canberra.

Is the 5 year deal good or bad. lets come back in 5 years.

As a Raiders fan am I happy with it. yes. i think its worth the risk for various reasons. Can it turn sh*t once again yes. but i see enough to have high hopes for Campo.

Do i care what other supporters think of Campo. No

Such as who? Carney was sacked after signing a new deal with us. Weyman played a few years with us and never reached his potential. Zillman is the only "gun" player to leave us who wasnt really forced out and after 2 season ending injuries I dont blame him.

If you are talking about players like finch, both monaghans, o'hara... well we got one monaghan back. The other wasnt playing regular first grade with us at the time he left. Matt elliot is a lot to blame for that. Happy finch and o'hara left....

How long Did Sherwin last on his 5 year deal at the bulldogs?
It was only 2 or 3 years from memory.

Rarely does anyone go the distance on a five year contract, and Campese doesn't have the best track record with injury. I just don't understand the logic of clubs willing to do it, we went through it with Gasnier and it ended up pushing us over the cap last year.

People shouldnt compare the decisions clubs in Sydney and QLD that find it easy to recruit make to a club like Canberra. At this stage its obvious they have to take more risks.

Since when does he not have a good track record with injury Firey?? The only injury Im aware of that he's had is the foot injury thats been nagging this year, never heard of anything else.

IMO those are enough examples of why you can't criticise Canberra for signing players to long term deals. What other rep players have we produced in that period? Wiki, Costigan, Mogg, Schifcofske - all of them except Costigan we didn't want to leave (although with Mogg we released him initially).

And it's not as if we bring in rep players to replace these losses, we have to rely on juniors and some lesser name signings.

Canberra should of kept Todd Carney. Sure he was loose kid. He still performed on the field.

If you look critically at Carney's record he probably really starred in half a dozen or so games in his time with the Raiders. Campese did more in the last 10 rounds or so last year than Carney did in his whole time here. Sure Carney is probably potentially better than Campese but he never really fulfilled that potential with the Raiders ... he was very prone to fading out of games for long periods, and the Raiders also showed the sort of inept attack they showed against the Knights when he was here.

I'll agree Campese is way below his best this year, except maybe in a couple of games. It remains to be seen whether he gets back to last year's form or whether that was a stellar aberration that he'll never be able to repeat.

If he can run to the line and stop playing before the line we'll be fine. Simple as that. His confidence is shot and Herbert is a dud.

Awesome player, worth the contract, everything goes in cycles, he will bounce back.

Also, maybe his departure from SOO has left him with a lack of confidence? whatever the case, he's a gun player, and a player to build a side around.

This guy had a dream last 8 weeks of 2008 added with a good first month of 2009.

The magic potion has worn off for Camo now!!!

inspired thread mate, certainly predicted this one.
"gun player" what a joke, the guy was struggling for a long time and in danger of getting cut,his form came out of nowhere and off the back of a raiders pack that dominated with some off the cuff footy.

This campese bloke couldn't find the try line with a map.
He looks like a little boy lost, albeit one that's financially set for life now.
