There isn't a player in the world I would want signed up for a 5 year contract. So much can change in that time, its simply not worth it.

To be fair Danish, you probably saw some of the best of Hodges in '02, sadly when he suffered that knee injury his attitude dropped to the point where he was a liability.

Speaking of bad signings:

Anthony Mundine: Was extremely quiet despite his hype and spent more time worrying about taking the No. 6 jersey off Walters than focussing on his own form on the field which was patchy at best.

Stuart Kelly: Went from a Queensland rep. and captain to a punchline.

Richard Swain: Was always a stand out for the Melbourne Storm in their early days. Was only ever a passenger at the Broncos.

Motu Tony: Didn't like being behind a young talent known as Karmichael Hunt and ended up leaving to go to England.

Scott Prince: Had to be the most unfortunate player in Broncos history.

I would sign Cliff Lyons up on a 5 year contract tomorrow, when the contract finishes he might be around 80 years old though lol.

he's a one man band at the raiders.

firstly, the coach is a relative (brother?) of the CEO.

dunno whow good the interview process was there.

i dont think he's up to it personally.

Its not Campo its the coaching FFS, our game plans and structures are worlds apart from last years when he was killing it. A halfback to help him out might come in handy as well.

He has only played 50 odd games himself.

If I have a criticism of him its he needs to probably drop a few kilos and work on his fitness. He is too mistake prone when puffed to turn into a lovable fat sporting hero
That criteria alone suggests that a 5 year deal was misguided.

Campese has been very ordinary this year, but when he puts in a remotely solid performance the media jump all over it. He doesn't get much help from anyone around him at the club though, but there is no chance that he is remotely as brilliant as the media will let you believe. He has one of the worst short kicking games I've seen.

His form last year is about the equivalent of what Jamie Soward is doing this year.

Soward was pretty good last year as well, not as good but he was still one of our best players throughout the season (received our internal Red V player of the year). He just hasn't had a blinder of half a season and come from nowhere, it's been building over a few years. However, we haven't gone ahead and signed him up for 5 years, in fact he still isn't signed beyond next year at the moment.

Love it when the nuffies on LU come out kicking him while he's down

yeah its sad really.

he's a quality player. playing in a small market team with a underperforming pack and an inexperienced "coach".

also.

who the f**k keeps picking brett kelly?

FFS. Ned Kelly would be better than him.

Guys, actually watch a Raiders game or two.

Campo is busting a gut out there for us, and there are 16 blokes giving him no help.

He's got a halfback who has very questionable skill and a hooker who is very raw. That was supposed to be solved by Stu Flanagan's arrival at the Raiders, but he has struggled with form and fitness.

Yesterday he played behind a pack who got monstered by a smaller opposition. When our pack goes forward, Campese is free to play his natural game. It's the same as any club - if your forwards get smashed, it doesn't matter how good your halves are, they'll do nothing.

There are rumours that we may be looking to sign a proven half for next season (I'm praying it's Mick Monaghan wanting to come home) and that coupled with Flanno hopefully regaining form and fitness will allow Campo to play his natural game. Our forwards will not get belted like that on a regular basis. Yesterday all of them - Shillington, Tilse, Logan, Tom LL, Harrison - all of them were beaten. That is a once in a season performance from them I'm sure.

One X factor which is stifiling him is the coach. A lot of Raiders fans (myself included) did not want Furner as head coach. We all remember the fiasco that was Mal Meninga as our head coach and sadly Furner, club legend and all, is shaping up to be Mal V 2.0. I don't ever see him getting axed though, due to our club being run by the Furner mafia. Best I can hope for is big brother Don Jr. recognising that Furnace is out of his depth and hiring a veteran, skilled coach as a coaching co-ordinator to pull Furner's strings and run the show. I can dream at least.

the poor bloke has absolutely NO help what so ever in attack
Alan Tongue is playing some sort of hybrid halfback/lock role and its not working, he needs to go back to doing what he does best, tackle his arse off, support the ball carrier through the middle and get into hooker for cheap metres. Not ball playing at 1st reciever, its screwing up the mojo of the side
Herbert needs to take some pressure off him, he's slowly doing that on 5th tackle, but he needs to stop grubbering for himself and a repeat set and start actually putting the wingers under pressure with behind the line kicks.

Campo cant do it all on his own, because when he is doing that we become so one dimensional that all the opposition have to do is stack campo's side and move up quickly on him to cut down his time
Its too easy in this day and age to shut down a side with only one threatening attacking weapon

Thats why we need blokes like Dugan and Waddell in the side, to give the opposition something else to think about, and to give Campo more options

Geez, you could throw Wally Lewis in his prime into the 2009 Raiders and he wouldn't set the world on fire. Admittedly he hasn't been going great guns, but a 5/8 can only do so much behind a beaten forward pack.

i think it's a gamble to sign any player that long.

out of curiosity, or players on long term contracts 4-5 years, how many actually complete them?

You have to wonder...Was Furner even watching the games where Trav Waddell played? We looked so good with him coming off the bench, he injects so much spark into the play.

The games where we have had a utility on the bench are the ones we've looked threatening and won matches.

Yet Furner consistently picks 4 big boppers. Time for the return of Waddell or Flanno...I don't see it happening though. Expect to see Brett Kelly named at halfback and captain this week.

hes not the king or anything like that, he is still developing as a player !

I think in a few years he will be a star!

I always wonder what the team would be like with carney back?

I think that they are a future force in the NRL but just need more experience!

:lol: at those bagging Campo. Have a watch of the Raiders game , the times we do something it is because of Campo.
Our forwards on a week to week basis havent aimed up. No use bagging herb either , who handles the ball more more as a 1st receiver. Tongue. The way we are structure confuses Herbert with Tongue interference. Look how good Herb looked against Warriors and Souths. Tongue didnt play in one and was off the bench in the other. no coincidence.

Also Campo's defence sh*ts all over most 5/8 , his defence was good in SOO . Wallace was sh*t in both attack and D , yet he escapes ant scrutinity

He's a very good player in a pretty sh*thouse team. That's about the crux of it. Throw him at 5/8 for the Bulldogs or the Storm and he'd dominate.

Also, Stuart Flanagan has turned out to be the biggest dud signing of the century, which hasn't helped Campese at all.
