I think the NRL.. or clubs in general need to look at there players
in regards to Public Speaking.
Some guys in the past.. Dally M's or on NRL on Fox etc etc..
just are terrible at being interviewed. Very few are decent.
I find this very embarrassing at times.. I think to the point
where clubs need to have in place a public speaking program
just to teach these morons how to communicate.

A bit of patience with these kids will do them the world of good.
It takes a while for kids from the country to learn how to handle a camera in their face, and the instant fame that comes with 1st grade footy in Sydney.
They do receive media training and it does work. Examples of this are Trent Barret and Matt Orford. Both horrible public speakers to start their careers but improved out of sight each year.

Give them time.

I'll make a deal with you....

You arrange for all storm players to attend daily elocution classes with June Dally-Watkins, and the rest of the comp will send our players to footy training instead.

Then at the end of the season you can marvel at how well spoken Greg Inglis and Cameron Smith are when he is being interviewed about missing the 8 for the first time in years.

I think it's a combination of them not wanting to improve because it's viewed as "uncool" & spending so much time together. The current demands of the media mean that the players are exposed more, but clubs are attempting to assist them as they realise it doesn't reflect well for the game or sponsors ( either existing or potential )

Hopefully the guidelines for Toyota Cup players will see a change in attitude & consequently the standard of communication as these guys progress to the NRL.

I'd love to see a few of the people on here bagging the players have a go at public speaking. Its something a lot of people aren't comfortable with, not just footy players.

I am sure even Timmah with 3 quarter pounders stuffed in his face would be understood better than what Pearce was. That was just dribble you would expect at 4am after 40 bourbons.

given how short a playing career is I'd be learning as much as I can and getting my mug in front of the camera as much as possible.
