Or maybe we can just let them play rugby league...

nope the public wants footballers with skills to rival the best toastmasters.

ffs take any random assortment of 20 year olds, male, female from all cultures, stick them in front of a media scrum and see if they do any better. some people arent fluent speakers at the ebst of times and a camera isnt going to help. some i have no idea what they're saying (i still cant work out mumbles fittler) but the reality is they werent signed for their oratory skills. if they can ebcome good at it then thats great but it's incredibly stupid to belief that everyone can become proficient at public speaking

Maybe the media should only be allwowed to talk to the captains.. as spokemans so to speak for there club.. and the rest of the players on media bans.

Does it matter so much though?

I personally watch the footy for the sport of it all rather than perfect diction in the interviews.

Union players speak sensationally but their sport is f**kin sh*t. That's the compromise.

i dont think we should be light on them here.. they are representing the game when they talk to the media.. these days.. thats very important IMO.

"As I said you guys I'm just starting to learn when to do what, and that, so, it is a lot of practice though."

I think it's actually "As the season goes on you start to learn when to do what and that, so, it is a lot of practice though"

But some scholars suggest this riddle may never be solved definitively.

Ability to speak in public =/= intelligence. Some people are clearly just nervous in public, big deal

I suggest you visit the Sam Backo school for not giving a toss what a camera, microphone or journalist is.

This is a big deal. Why do people think League players are perceive as boofheads? And before anyone pipes up with it being due to their off field indiscretions, it has been this was way forever not just in resent years.

I know for a fact a lot of people are turned off by their perceived stupidity, including corporate sponsors. I know that it is the demographic of the general League player and almost impossible to change, but they have an opportunity that most of their peers growing up don't have. That is professional Rugby League.

I believe that if the League and clubs in particular took this seriously at the very least all players in the NYC teams have speech elocution lessons at least 3 times a week and tested regularly on their progress.

This may sound over the top to most of you, but well spoken champions in sports are worth millions to themselves and their organizations. It needs to be drummed into these kids that most of them will probably not make it, and being able to present themselves better then the average Bogan will be a huge advantage in their lives away from football, and for the ones that do make it, the sky's the limit if you have the grace and style and or wit to take advantage of the opportunities that will be presented.

I think the NRL.. or clubs in general need to look at there players
in regards to Public Speaking.
Some guys in the past.. Dally M's or on NRL on Fox etc etc..
just are terrible at being interviewed. Very few are decent.
I find this very embarrassing at times.. I think to the point
where clubs need to have in place a public speaking program
just to teach these morons how to communicate.

I find it hilarious that Simostorm starts a thread about poor language skills!

Having said that, a bloke on the sunny side of $200k should have no problems having elocution lessons. Heck, even some coaches speak with the eloquence of a 4 year old!

Some of the classics:

"Yeah naarrr" It's either yes or now ffs!

"We done good" Except in school. We DID WELL or HAVE DONE WELL

"We gave 110 percent" So are you on Roids?

Some of those are just evolutions of the old Benny Elias school of media speak. "We stuck to our guns and came up trumps"

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know that a well spoken footballer has a decent chance at a good media career (Sterlo, Chief)- or even better the NRMA board (Toovey, Coyne) or public office (Ozzy, Cleary).
