Who gives a shit if they are not good at public speaking, they are footy players not CEO's of top 500 companies.

Yeah why should they want to improve themselves and be seen as professionals.

Kasiano face of the game 2013.

I dont think anyone is expecting them to be wordsmiths, but stringing three words together or constructing a basic coherent sentence shouldnt be hard for anyone over the age of 5.

Because they're professional footballers, not professional public speakers. I'd like to see you germs up on stage in front of the cameras

Most sports do provide some sort of media training for their athletes. Even in most junior academies there is an element of this now, along with the usual nutrition, hydration and training advice. Probably not in RL though. Not something RL people would have thought of. Best we can do is tell the under 20s kids not to bash or rape women at their little pre-season camp thingy and not to do drugs and drink too much.

Funnily enough as part of the new rights deal Nine and Fox have to give media training to something like 180 players a year.

I am ok at it now but in my 20's and particularly early in my 20's I was f**king terrible at it.

Give them a break imo.

Most of them do go through media training, I remember Bowen used to be atrocious but recent interviews I have seen with him he is so much better. Same with Watmough. At the end of the day I am not going to hang sh!t on some young kid that is probably shitting themselves with a camera put in front of them and end up sounding like a idiot. I am sure whilst many would sound thick in real life they would not be as bad in everyday situations as they appear on tv. Some people will just never be comfortable in front of a camera.

Every other professional sporting organizations athletes I've seen anywhere put what the nrl produces year after year to shame.. even including the speech impaired paraolympians.

FFS its not as if they dont perform in front to 16k each weekend, plus a few hundred thousand on tv is it.

Its not about being a professional public speaker its about making a f*cking effort. Barba a perfect example of a shy guy still doing his best to give a good speech and it was great despite the nerves.

On the opposite end you have Kasiano being a f*cking lump of dog sh*t giving blank stares and one word answers.. pathetic

Exactly. It's the image it sends to the general public and confirms the old stereotype about league players being thickheads.

Barba was excellent as was Cherry-Evans.

Just want players who can articulate their thoughts on the game that pays them a bucket load to play and represent like any other pro sport in the world.

I think you expect too much from some players. You know the saying, you cannot polish a turd. That applies here. Some are just not cut out for media, therefore use others players that are well presented.

Uate and Barba are incredibly shy which is kind of funny considering the impression you get from them when they're on the field.

Tbh I thought some of the presenters were just as bad as the players, stumbling over their words... now that's embarrassing.

End of the day I don't give a shit if these blokes can string two words together, they're paid to play footy, and if they do that alright, that's all I could care less about

If you ever watch the AFL footy show, they have a huge range of guests, all speak fantastic. Compare that to some of the dumb forwards we get on ours. Worlds apart.
