It has little to do with their actual intelligence, and everything to do with being shy and not having access to middle class education.

They simply do not like being in front of a camera. They freeze. They feel awkward with so many strangers watching them.

Do not make assumptions on a person's intelligence because of the slang they use or their lack of public speaking polish.

A bum off the street can do a better job talking to a camera then what some of those players produced..

Chris Heighington post 2005 Grand Final over all

Sam Kasiano looks like he has been to The Fitler Media Institute" standing there you have expected the words "I pooped em" to come out of his mouth.

You can say what you want about AFL, but when you compare the AFL Footy Show & Brownlows to our TV/awards shows, they are light years ahead. Makes our shows look so amateur it's embarrassing.

Agree 100%. I think the NRL should take a look at how the AFL portrays its image.

There's a difference between "well spoken genius" and "able to string a coherent sentence together". Most of the problem is selecting the right players to make public appearances, obviously with award ceremonies there's no choice but the footy show constantly has awkward and shy guests on.

Also media training works. Matt Bowen used to be shy and barely comprehensible when he was first getting interviews in 04/05, now he still speaks quite quickly but you can understand what he is saying and he can get through an interview without making a goose of himself. Every NRL player should have this minimum level of media literacy.

yet i doubt you'd do much better.... f**k me we should stop training, put the weights away and spend the whole week learning how to sound eloquent for the camera's. i dont give a f**k if a yawnion player or AFL player speak more coherently than kasiano. he's there to play footy not make speeches. ewan mcgardy was shy and didnt even turn up by himself to the awards ceremony many years ago - by your logic he should have been made to pass a public speaking course before being put onto the field.

there are people from all walks of life who dont do well at public speaking -this includes CEO's, senior managers, politicians (look at abbot ffs). i've seen experienced lecturers struggle at times in large groups. how well you speak publicly doesnt mean shit about intelligence

moi moi is shy i think we should ban him from footy till he learns to give a 20minute speech without cue cards

AFL players aren't geniuses and there still are some poor speakers but on average as a whole their speaking is somewhat above nails on a chalkboard which is what a number of speeches felt like last night.

Every player should be made to do a compulsory media training and public speaking course as part of their rookie contract.

Settle down sunshine, all we are talking about is some media training here.

We all want whats best for the game. There is no doubt that it is better for our game if our players interview and speak well instead of sounding like some stupid f**ker they just pulled from long bay, so why are you whinging like someone just pissed in your cereal?

Speaking well publicly might not mean shit about intelligence but it shows you care about your image and how you present yourself.

Give yourself an uppercut for one of the most ridiculous melt downs ive seen on here.

I don't know how true any of these statements are. I don't take note of their silly sport. Switch chan when it is on the news etc.

BUT... perhaps the AFL have a say in who gets interviewed? As to come across better. When they feel a player is ready to talk, they get the green light? Maybe!!

oh please i can meltdown much further. after the bunniesman outing a few weeks ago i realised that most of the stuff on here (and yes i contribute to it as well) is negative. we (fans) carry on about how organisation like news ltd treat the game but we have "fans" on here whinging about every f**king thing they can..so a player isnt the best public speaker so f**king what?

my "meltdown" is directed at simostorm as well, not what most others have said here which is realistic

If a player isn't a good public speaker then give them some media training, thats what. Its looks better for the game and it will do the players confidence some good. Thats what we are saying, what is so bad about that ffs?

Wow. Jocks sound dumb. And here I was thinking we watched them performing Shakespeare every weekend.

In other breaking news, water is wet and fire is hot!

Personally, I hate the clichés they are trained to use. I'd rather them just sound dumb.
