Can we all agree Brian Smith didn't do a very good job with the rebuilding

Whatever side of the Smith fence you sit on, it still irks me to see Luke MacDougal scoring a try a game for the Storm for a vast number of reasons. ( Especially in the context of the $200,000 per year ' value ' he had at the Knights )

It was probably the one downside to Smith as a coach throughout the last couple of decades. He holds a grudge against players if they stand up to him or do not do what he expects.

There had to of been times last year when Mad Dog was out and we had Keith or Wes performing gate entry duties in the centres when Mad Pup could have had a run

It was a farce on both sides.

Mad Pup for ruling himself out despite the advice of Club Doctors, Club physios, his own doctor both here and in the US and his own physio.

Then Smithy refusing to pick him on principle.

Exactly man, Madpup got his kanipuns for mine.

Players can probably allowed to be petulant every now and then because of their ego and allowed a bit more leeway of understanding and/or micro management because they are high maintenance.

You can't afford a coach being the same. And a truly good coach isn't.

Smith recruited about 10 guys who turned out to be great buys, but for every Faas there was a Finefuaki, for every Sau there was his mate who came from Canberra and played about 3 games of reggies, for every Zeb Taia there was a Ben Taia, for every Chis Houston there was a Willie Tupou etc etc etc.
With the dozen guys in NYC and about the same number in NSW cup, I think Smith signed 30 and got 10 firstgraders, and a few of them had names like Wes and Keith and George.

Because there's such a thing as a salary cap, and it's all about getting value. How much do you reckon it costs to lure the kind of player you're mentioning? How you can knock the recruitment of players like Sau, Taia, Faas, Vuna and Hilder is beyond me. Their market value has skyrocketed since they came here. That's either brilliant talent spotting or brilliant coaching or both.

I'm not knocking those 5 players! if you read my first post i said those 5 were our best signings. Apparently calling a player "ok" is a grave insult around here. You guys might think Cooper Vuna is outstanding i say hes just alright. Considering he hasn't won any Dally m medals and rival clubs aren't offering him 400k a season i'm going to say hes closer to alright then outstanding you might disagee, whatever.

As for the Salary cap, we had like 2 million dollars to spend for 2008 if there was ever a time to sign one of those players that was it.

It also sure would have been nice if SuperCoach recognised the talent in Gareth Ellis as well when he was offered to the Knights for a cheap price instead of somehow thinking an international forward wasn't good enough for the NRL... Baffling that one.

Well honestly if we had Joey in for those 2 years I have no doubt we would have been a top 4 side. Imagine how excited BSmith would have been to be working with Joey and that's why I imagine he bought kinda reserve grade guys with talent while trying to offload guys who were just wasting space.

If we just add Joey to the side of 08 and 09 I am sure it'd look 10 times as intimidating!

You love getting mileage out of your 'Ellis win' don't you Karma...stroked that ego enough lately?

(not that you are wrong but it had to be said)

Well it's hard competing in here with some of the other egos around - especially those who feel they have the god given right to stamp a thread a fail whenever they don't agree with something and all like thats the ultimate conclusion to the debate. ;-)

So one might as well ' stroke their ego ' when they get the chance or miss out with all the other stroking going on around these parts.

Ellis was difficult for me to swallow.

He stood out like dogs ahem when training here for the world cup.

Practically knocked on the door and asked for a start........

lol...my ego? Given that you've already posted in this thread, there is no space for any others! And you picked on the wrong guy when it comes to the "why are you talking about egos when yours is bigger than most" style of reply.

So you agree with reggie that:

Brian Smiths "rebuilt" team is now one of the oldest in the NRL

Luke MacDougall Played what 1 game in 3 years? would have to be one of the worst signings in NRL history

Cameron Ciraldo - Ordinay backup player
Ben Cross - Played about 7 games each year, Has been good when he has played but not good value for money.

Richard Fa'aoso - Bench player who drops the ball a lot. One of our best signings
Matt Hilder - Pretty good but really just a bench player.
Junior Sau - Solid without being brilliant
Zeb Taia - Pretty good probably our best signing But still hasn't even made a rep side.

Now lets look at the "deadwood" they replaced.

Matthew Gidley
Danny Buderus

And then further down the garbage about Perry, Newton, Quinn, Snowden, Lowrie and Joey/Dureau

The guy has no idea (and I think you do too), but would it be possible for you to confirm that for us all by answering yes?

Oh Serc,

You should know by now ( ffs ) that I don't agree with anyone. And if I had a fail stamp, I would have probably used it before as well , 15 or 20 times.

Wat Ellis wanted to come here like that much? Is that what you guys are saying I don't really get it?

Ellis>Patto>Taia>Houston>Simpson if you ask me!

Well which one is it, the support of the fail thread stamp or the disagreeing with the fail thread stamp?

The use of an individual to stamp a thread fail simply when they don't agree with a thread.

Go you, Forum God. ;-)
