Civ is on around 400k per season but pissing off Gower probably gave them a bit more to play with.
We had a bit of room under the salary cap before Petero left, but when Gower left i think we pretty much threw the amount he was on at Petero. Which was really one of the best things our management has done.

Having Petero will make it easier to attract players and keep our current stars.

Yeah, and the Dogs did it with SBW and Mason and look where it landed them.

It's a massive risk to have two "marquee" players on that sort of money, but if Canberra has one then I guess Todd Carney should be it (as much as he probably doesn't deserve it yet).

Dude if you want to piss in the long grass with the big boys you've got to take a risk or two.

If two former greats of the game back up the opinion a few of us had of TC some 3 seasons ago when he was running round in the lwoer grades that is good enough for me.

If we lose him we will once more be the joke of the NRL ... "develop decent players and we'll take them from you" will be the claim from other clubs and their supporters.

Yeah, I'm saying that exactly. If Todd stays he will be our marquee player and I guarantee we won't be in the market for another marquee player as long as TC is here (unless we develop our own).

It is a risk and I'm agreeing with you - although not the bit where you offer him $400K from the get-go. We need to have a little patience and come up trumps when final bids are in.

I'm sorry but my view stands. If the kid goes, he's a lowlife.

Incidently I still feel that way about J Monnas. He has a long way to go before he proves himself back to me.

We as fans are far more loyal than players. I think we're entitled to feel as insulted and offended as we like when players abandon us. I can't fathom how accepting some people are.

The thing with Monas is that he's had 3 sh*t years in the NRL and 2 1/2 of those were with the Roosters.

Therefore in my books he's paid back some of that debt already.

I think every fan will feel it if TC leaves but it is way too early to get the knives out. This is all part of the game to squeeze the most he can out of the club.

My gut instinct is that he will stay and IF he doesn't then there will be some serious questions to be answered by TC and management but at the moment it is all speculation.

Because players have careers and they are entitled to make decisions for themselves in the same way that we do in "real life".

That doesn't mean that certain players don't do things in a classless way, but it is their prerogative.

You're entitled to be disappointed when players leave, but "insulted" or "offended" is a bit much.

That's your prerogative though.

I can see a number of reasons why our management is playing hardball with Todd.

I'd say without doubt he's the one player that has caused us way more grief than any other in the last 10 years. Some of his antics have pissed me off more than I ever could have thought a football player was able to do.

Ironically reminds me of Gower - and some times you do wonder if the team would be better off without him.

Picked up my local newspaper this morning to read that Manly look like re-signing Brett Stewart for 4 years on a $1.5M deal. Then picked up the Telegraph to read that Manly are now considered favourites to sign Carney. What is going on???? They claim that the likes of Steve Bell and Matt Orford finishing up over the next 2 years gives them enough space. When I look at who is coming off contract on our roster, which includes the likes of Colin Best, Michael Dobson, Scott Logan, Glen Turner and even Michael Weyman, surely one or two of these could be comfortably sacrificed to retain Carney, although the article in the Tele indicates Canberra would have to better the other clubs offer of $400K to keep him. Apparently final offer is to be tabled by the club today. Surely if we at least match then given his past, loyalty must play some part.

Interesting reading SR ...

The bottom line is that we have the same cap as any other NRL club ... we also probably have a greater percentage of over-paid players (which can be rectified come end of season 2008).

I posted a formula previously which sugggests we should be able to pay $400K + $350K + (4 x $250) to our top six players.

I am really trying not to have an anurism or vent my spleen but the ulcer's are getting to big

Whilst i don't think carney is worth 400k yet i really hope it is incentive based ie; plays full year we get into top 8 or even 4, rep status

now on management front how can't we afford $400k

Lets look for a minute

We released early the following players last year
Andrew Dunemann
Craig Frawley
Steve Irwin
Andrew Lomu
Tony Pamatangi
Josh McCrone

Some small ones but some mid to large as well would have helped pay for mona's back

We released the following player in pre season
Matt Bickerstaff
Chris Borgese
Vili Faingaa
David Howell
Steve McLean
Jack Pearson
Troy O'Sullivan
Alan Rothery
Junior Sau
Jason Williams

We kicked the following to souths logan's books
Glenn Buttriss
Brad Cross
Willie Raston
Jay lasscock

That's a sh*t load of money saved

Off contract this year

Colin Best
Terry Campese
Todd Carney
Marshall Chalk
Neville Costigan option to end 2009
Michael Dobson
Bronx Goodwin
Ryan Hinchcliffe
Ben Jones
Brett Kelly
Scott Logan
David Milne
Adrian Purtell
Trevor Thurling
Glen Turner
Michael Weyman

There is only 5 that i would resign now the rest need to perform or go and some will take the esl money

We should have at least 1 million plus to sign up the following

Carney 300k base 100k incentive
Flanagan 250k base 50k incentive
Campese 150k base 50k incentive
Thurling 150k base 50k incentive
Goodwin 150k base 50k incentive
Weyman 150k base 50k incentive

I would even go as far as releasing Withers and Miller to make sure the above happen

All the rest blow me away or bugger off

I just don't understand it and it is driving me crazy

So you've got 6 players taking up over half the cap, leaving about 85k each for the rest.
I'm interested to know who you'd deem worthy to be on the big dollars and how you'd break down the remainder.

Yea thats right 6 "marquee" players taking up $1.7M ... therefore the remaining players sharing 2.2M (based on 3.9M cap), ie $115K each, ie some will get 150K and some $80K.

"Who would I consider worthy of the big bucks ??".... certainly not David Howell or Withers.

The only question I have of you .. is the cap $3.9M or $4.1M.

Is the cap $3.9M? According to nrl.com, it's $3.366M

Who is worthy then?
By the way, Howell doesn't play for us any more.

Apeman I dont think the cap is $3.366 .. porbably back in 2003 it was but it at least $3.9M now.

Anyone want to dispute that.

The 2008 salary cap is $4.1 million.

I saw that in the players certified agreement with the NRL detailed last year.
