What's wrong with giving him a one year deal and if he behaves that year, top him up on another one year deal etc etc. If he does something bad (doing a piss in public is not bad) then get rid of him. The clubs image won't really be affected in a bad way, as it's obvious that if he did make another mistake, it's his own fault. I also couldn't see us, or any club for that matter giving him a million chances like Noyce did for the Roosters, so it shouldn't really affect the club all that much. He probably won't be on all that much money either, so it shouldn't harm our cap much if he does end up being released.

He's an exceptional talent and everyone would be lining up to sign him based on his football ability.

Depends on what kind of deal... If he was on too much coin then no... Match payments then why not? I would hate for us to gamble and have half our cap wasting away at newcastle mental health centre...

Could be a huge positive for newcastle and nsw as well...

happily give him a shot.... and he would be crazy to not be banging on our door, we are the ideal club to get him right.

Best coach, out of the DT spotlight, not back with his moron Canberra mates, it all lines up.

even though i dont care about his petty off-field discretions, our club is full of good boys (or so it appears) and he'll destabilise us. we dont need him.

makes the team look stronger on paper, that's about it

Don't need him Stig and Roberts and much better prospects without the fragile sticker. When you compare the money Stig and Roberts would be on compared to Carney its a no-brainer.

Whilst I am excited as to the future of Stig and Roberts, this is nowhere near correct.

I'd be happy to give him a shot.

He's had off field dramas, but in the grand scheme of things they are relatively minor, albeit persistent. We've had multiple rape charges and assault charges against players in our game (and not minor players, superstars), which I think we can all agree is a big step up from a guy who acts like a dickhead when he's drunk.

Give him a one year deal. Don't pick him for Round One. Make him earn his stripes with the Centurions, but let him drink. Teaching Todd to drink in moderation and how to handle his grog would be the better option than a booze ban. If he can keep his nose clean for x amount of weeks and his form is up to it, bring him into the top team.

I think what people tend to forget is it is the very part of Todd's personality which makes him a dickhead on the drink that also makes him a brilliant footballer. Very similar to Andrew Johns in many respects.

We would need to make sure he moderates his actions rather than restrict him.

Unpredictability? Creativity? Intensity? You can't control the bit of his brain that makes him an intense, unpredictable individual off the field and expect him to remain as creative or intense on the field.

To me he is not far removed as someone like Anthony Watmough.

Is the guy an alcoholic? If so, we can't "moderate" his drinking. That's part of what makes him an alcoholic- he is dependent on alcohol and doesn't know when to, or can't stop drinking, after just a couple. Doesn't matter if the drug in question is illegal or not.

I'm not entirely sure if anybody really knows what he is. An alcoholic? Depressed? A free spirit? A dickhead? All of the above?

People like to place labels on him. Just not sure whether they are right or not.

Todd and his manager will not being taking his price down for one poor season he will be expecting 200-250k. I think a lot of people get caught up in the hype surrounding Carney even in 2010 he was not that great when put under pressure e.g. Tigers game and the grand final. He was good as a partnership with Pearce in 2010 but was a significantly worse player without him e.g. games vs us. I would prefer to invest our cap in Stig and Roberts as they appear a more safe and prosperous investment over the long term.

well, that's one way to mush together a bunch of incidental, potentially unrelated factors to form an opinion. not like you to do something like that, Alex.

you're a major in psychology now, to go with your finances/economics/business degrees? you're a busy man. i'm sure Todd would love to get in touch with you, though... he needs someone in his corner like you. do you suggest we do what we did with Joey, and sweep it all under the rug and hope no-one notices?

... and just my opinion on the man himself... i'd be very tempted to give him yet another chance. he's that good. i strongly believe an on-track Carney is one of the players of his generation.

Put it like this.

Any player we are in official talks with or have signed from April 2011 until Mid 2015 has a pretty credible stamp of approval on it. Not much, if any, trash gets through Bennett quarantine.

So my opinion is this, i'm not even thinking about Carney been a Knight but if i were to hear we had entered discussions with his manager then i would back Bennett to utilize the massive potential from the enigma that is Todd Carney. So i am all for it.

If anyone else, including Bellamy, was our coach it'd be a no way.

No. The bloke is a walking time bomb.
What's he going to do? Get drunk?

If he helps us win football games what he does on his own time doesn't bother me. If the Roosters were in a better position this year he never would have been sacked.
