FRENCH CAN SHOW THEIR CLASS

Saturday:
Catalans v Hull KR (+12)
This will be a new experience for Hull KR going to France. I just think the derby game last week will take a lot out of them mentally and physically and going to France on top of that defeat is too much. The French have got the ability to score tries and they showed that last week against Harlequins. I like the Catalans here. At home they should be too good and in what should be a high scoring game they can get the win and cover the start.

MORGAN REVEALS ESCAPE PLAN

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan has set his side the stiff target of winning half of their eight remaining engage Super League matches to avoid the drop.
Rovers, who remain in deep relegation trouble after losing their last five matches, launch their great escape plan in Perpignan this evening against Catalans Dragons.
The French club are just three points above the Robins but are immune from relegation, which is increasingly looking like a two-horse race with Salford, who visit Warrington on Sunday.
The bottom two meet in a potentially decisive clash at The Willows on August 3 and Morgan is desperately hoping his side can put some daylight between the sides before then.
"If we can get to 20 points, which is four wins, we'll be pleased," he said.
"The game at Salford is a huge one and it's important to have a bit of space between ourselves and Salford when we get there to take a bit of the pressure out of the game.
"We need to win very soon and, when that happens, I'm confident we can string one or two together.
"It's certainly looking like it's going to be between ourselves and Salford but any team on less than 18 points is going to be in the mix.
"With the topsy-turvy nature of Super League, we know that anyone can beat anyone.
"There is an air of confidence among the players and an air of determination to get the job done. It's new territory for a lot of them but they've still got faith in what we're doing."
Rovers face a Catalans side who have won five of their eight games at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium this year and the French also won 34-20 at Craven Park on Good Friday.
In also swapping the damp air of northern England for the sunny climes of southern France, the Robins know the odds are stacked against them.
"We play at eight o'clock at night, so the temperature is not going to be as high," said Morgan. "I'm sure there will be some advantage but not a huge one.
"It's a little bit of a mindset thing, if you allow it to get to you. We've quite a few overseas players who have played in heat back in Australia.
"As for being at home, it's a French mentality. They have a huge pride in winning at home.
"That's more important than winning anywhere else, it's part of their culture.
"It will certainly be tough to get a result but I'm confident that if we can improve on some fundamental things we can be very competitive and get the points."
Rovers, without chief playmakers Paul Cooke and Chris Chester, recall goalkicking centre Gareth Morton and utility back Andreas Bauer, while prop Makali Aizue returns from a three-match ban to help offset the absence of Michael Vella.
Catalans welcome back promising centre or winger Vincent Duport from a two-month absence with a groin problem, while back row forward Andrew Bentley takes the place of Julien Touxagas.

If the Dragons play to their potential, they'll win by 30 tonight.

Lets hope so, they need to beat teams like this if they are any chance of making the semis.

Geez but the Catalans are unimaginative. They had many chances to win this but their attacking play inside HKR's 20m was plodding, obvious, non-threatening, a continuous series of second-man plays with the outside runners often too flat to take advantage of the few occasions that space was produced.

Jones is a great kicker but the ploy of chipping 6th tackle kicks into the in-goal is useless, gifting HKR 20 metre restarts on three occasions and only once nearly ending in a try, but for Greenshields to drop it just before hitting the ground.

HKR's third try was as definitive a double movement as you're likely to see but the video ref awarded Gene his try. Other than that Les Cats weren't hard done by at all. They blew it.

Again, the French players deserve blame. Last week Fellous and Griffi were lazy on inside defence on plays leading to London tries. This week Gossard was stepped by Webster for HKR's first try. Bosc was average again. I kick goals better than him and his kick off out on the full led to an HKR try. He also knocked on crucially in his own half. Duport came back from injury, played second row from the bench, had two runs.....knocked both of them on. Fellous tried a mad offload in traffic that led to HKR possession....and another try.

Guissett and Khattabi were the best Frenchmen. I really like the latter, he's a classy athlete and has star quality.

Of the imports, McGuire just seems on the periphery of play, but maybe that's because of the tactical over reliance on Jones, I don't know.

There was one amazing passage of play: Khattabi sped into an attacking HKR grubber, collecting it on his own goal line, then juggling it for 5 metres as he sped upfield, cut through the chase then ran for 30 metres, switching back on the inside to Bosc who made another 20 metres before giving a long ball to Mogg and looping round the outside. Mogg drew a man and passed to Bosc who was tackled 15 metres out. From there nowt happened but that passage had the crowd - and me, and the commentators - going crazy. Beautiful footy.

Anyway, Potter needs to sort his sh*t out. I watched Sts - Leeds last week and the difference in variety in attack between those sides and Les Cats is staggering.

ROVERS SURVIVE DRAGONS FIGHTBACK

survived a stirring second-half fightback by the Catalans Dragons to secure a vital 22-20 engage Super League win on Saturday night.
Clint Greenshields' early try put the home side ahead but Justin Morgan's side rocked the Catalans with four quick tries.
Scott Morrell's kick set up Mark Lennon for the first and, with Catalans on the back foot, Stanley Gene, Ian Hardman and Mark O'Neill also crossed as Rovers carved out a 16-point half-time lead.
But Catalans regained their composure and came back strongly after the break, only to fall short by two points.

MORGAN HAILS TRY-SAVING COCKAYNE

Hull KR coach Justin Morgan saluted Ben Cockayne for the two try-saving tackles in the 22-20 win over the Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.
Cockayne's performance typified Rovers' team spirit and their never-say-die defiance was needed to stave off a stirring second-half fight back by the Dragons.
Morgan, who began his coaching career in France with Toulouse, relished his return and made sure it was the travelling Rovers supporters who would be celebrating Bastille Day instead of the French.
"I'm relieved to get back to winning ways," said Morgan, after watching his relegation-threatened side claim only their third win in 16 matches.
"Hopefully this win will give us renewed confidence for the remainder of the season.
"I thought Ben Cockayne was outstanding with his two try-saving tackles and his positional play.
"He was always in the right place to gather Stacey Jones' kicks and I believe Jones is the best kicker in the league. Ben came up with big plays all game long."
Morgan was delighted with the workrate of his players who hung on with great determination when Catalans' scented victory in the second half.
"We are a side of talented individuals who can also play well as a team and tonight I think we saw that they were prepared to work for each other to get the right result," said Morgan.
"I thought the first 40 minutes were reasonably good and we took our opportunities well, which pleased me.
"I was disappointed with the tries we conceded from kicks but to put 22 points on them in the first half was important."

I just saw the highlights of the game (9m 35 seconds).

I agree with screeny that Younes Khattabi, from what I saw, has the potential to be a real star French three quarter.

His two tries showed quality wingman's skills.

Then after the kick by Hull KRs Webster for an attacking support, which was let bounce (in fact neither side had a man in place to take it on the full) the ball bounced favourably for an alert Khattabi standing behind his own try line. Khattabi's burst out from his own tryline, while juggling the ball in front of him, was truly spectacular, as was the further rush on a left diagonal, then his pass to Bosc who ran to the right then turned the chasing oppositon defence inside out at speed before passing to Mogg, who drew the defenders back in and then passed outside to a looping around Bosc, who ran to 15 yards from the line. It certainly deserved the adjective "extraordinaire" from Sports + caller Rodolphe Pires.

Khattabi's one obvious failure was to be out of position when Hull KR scored their first try on his wing. He was nowhere to be seen. But he is a classic case of a talent that will only improve with coaching and experience. He has size, speed, balance, and athleticism. I wonder where he would be more effective -- at centre or on the wing?

When one thinks about it, France is starting to develop the makings of a quality three quarter line, with Pelo, Khattabi, Duport and possibly Stacul. If Olivier Charles ever reappears he could be another consideration, along with Planas. You need eight quality three quarters to be safe from the ravages of injury. France may be slowly getting there at last.
