This cant be left for the clubs to decide...

It would be like asking someone to give themselves a pay cut...

The addition of a club from Perth and another from Queensland - either central Queensland or west of Brisbane - emerged as the preferences in discussion. But while the consensus was that expansion was a positive for the game at the appropriate time, that may not be 2013, as has been widely expected - and there may not be any additions to the 16-team premiership before 2015.

2015 would be a mistake in my view. Get it up and running by 2013.

I would prefer another QLD team to the Bears as well...

 Hilarious.

For a start Berkeley Eagle, there's already a topic covering the Bears. "Rumours" from "Herald inside sources" is not exactly worthy of a new topic where the same old morons are going to come out with the same old tepid arguments about why the Bears are not the best team to come in.

Secondly, this is hardly groundbreaking news.

Gold Coast, Brisbane and North Qld have been quoted in saying they don't want a new Qld team. Melbourne has been quoted saying a Perth team should be postponed and now the NSW don't want the CCBears.

This isn't just a matter of them not wanting the Bears. This is a matter of them not wanting any new team. Doesn't matte though we are at 4141 members and quickly approaching 5000. They don't want this because they think we are literally a threat now. We shouldn't be listening to club bosses anyways. That's like saying myer doesn't want David jones around. Which is true but you simply cannot stop progress.

They fail to see the bigger picture now. People are commited to the CCBears and now you risk alienating more people and fans over the bears and as if we the code hasn't already lost support.

NRL clubs don't want Bears in their backyard
Greg Prichard December 01, 2010

THE bid by the Central Coast Bears for admittance to the NRL is lacking crucial support from existing clubs.

Sources have told the Herald that at the two-day annual conference of NRL club chief executives and chairmen in Byron Bay, which finished yesterday, there was a majority belief that expanding in other areas would better suit the competition.

The new free-to-air and pay television deals are scheduled to be in place in time for the start of the 2013 season, and existing clubs are keen to use the anticipated increase in funds to try to boost their own profitability before the financial pie is cut into thinner slices.

The power of the clubs is increasing as the founding of an independent commission to run the game nears completion. The clubs are more likely to join forces on major issues, as demonstrated by the push from NSW clubs to install their representatives in key positions at the NSWRL this Friday.
The commission will be responsible for making big decisions in the future, but the clubs will still have a major influence on the direction the game takes - particularly when they stick together.

Perth has support from the clubs as an area for expansion for three reasons: because the time difference between there and the eastern states would allow it to fit in nicely with live television programming; nib Stadium is already available as a venue and the economy there is seen to be booming.
It is understood there are influential figures in Perth who would be prepared to get behind a bid there.

A fourth Queensland team would increase the number of Queensland derbies that could be staged - another plus for television. NRL chief executive David Gallop was in Rockhampton last week to meet the central Queensland bid team.
Gallop refused to discuss the pros and cons of expansion bids when contacted by the Herald last night, but said that ''while we discussed the 18-team scenario, it's clear we need to have more profitability in our [existing] clubs before we expand''.

Referring to potential new clubs, Gallop added: ''Not only would they need to have viable business plans for themselves, but they would have to show they could add something to the overall health of the game.''
The club chairmen and chief executives yesterday decided that from next season, games in week one of the finals series that included a Sydney team as the higher-ranking side would not be played at that team's home ground, but at either Sydney Football Stadium or ANZ Stadium.

Clubs have been reluctant to switch such games from their home grounds in the past, but there has been a change in attitude that now sees the maximisation of revenue as a priority ahead of home ground advantage. Huge attendances at games played at ANZ Stadium during later stages of the finals in the past two seasons has had an influence there.

Gallop described that decision as a positive example of the need for the game to continue to make important decisions ahead of the independent commission being operative, and not just tread water in the meantime.

AVOCA BEACH BOWLING CLUB TRIO CLAIM TOP HONOURS IN THE INAUGURAL CENTRAL COAST BEARS PRESIDENTS CUP

30th November, 2010 | Posted by Central Coast Bears.

The inaugural Central Coast Bears Presidents Cup Bowls Tournament wrapped up on the weekend at Avoca Beach Bowling and Recreation Club, with a team from the Avoca club claiming top honours.

The winning team included Nick Russell, Tony Shoebridge and Glenn O'Brien.

Runner-up went to Laurie Jones, Dirk Van Spronssen and Ray Bovis from Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Bowling Club.

More than 200 bowlers participated in the event, with the winners enjoying a share of prize money exceeding $1,000.

Qualifying events were held across four leading clubs on the Central Coast, with all participants receiving an automatic one year membership to the Central Coast Bears.

“We just want to thank Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Bowling Club, Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club, Halekulani Bowling Club and Avoca Beach Bowling and Recreation Club for making this tournament a huge success,” said Central Coast Bears CEO, Greg Florimo.

“The support the Central Coast Bears bid has received from players and spectators throughout this event has been fantastic,” he adds.

Florimo claims the Central Coast Bears Presidents Cup is likely to become an annual fixture on the local Lawn Bowls calendar.

“It’s going to be bigger and better next year and we’ll be inviting all clubs on the Central Coast to participate,” he said.

Throughout the tournament, Florimo and Central Coast Bears Football Operations Manager, David Fairleigh provided bowlers and spectators an update of the bid being presented to the NRL in March 2011.

Central Coast Bears Director, Michael Buettner presented the winners with their trophies.

The former Kangaroo and Bears player was also on hand to sign up some new members and promote Central Coast Bears Cubs Memberships.

“For just $10, kids can get a Central Coast Bears cap and a wrist band, so it’s great value for money," said Buettner.

Chronic rugby league supporter and newly signed member Glenn O'Brien is one of many pledging his support to the Central Coast Bears.

“I'll be at every home game and the same applies for about 99% of my friends.”

“Even local rugby union players want an NRL team on the Central Coast," O'Brien adds.

The past month has seen more than 1000 new members sign up, with the Central Coast Bears surpassing 4100 members.

The aim is to secure 5000 members before March 2011, which is when the Central Coast Bears submit their bid proposal to the NRL.

This was always going to be the case once the "independent commission" was up and running.
I do genuinely feel for the supporters of clubs pushing for admission, but I can also see both sides of this argument.

Bears to finalise bid for entry to NRL
Stuart Honeysett From: The Australian December 01, 2010 12:00AM

THE Central Coast yesterday revealed it had employed a global consultancy firm to boost its bid to join the NRL competition in 2013.

But*the NRL indicated*it could err on the side of caution when it comes to expansion.

The annual NRL chief executives conference finished in Byron Bay yesterday where club bosses covered a range of issues that could confront the game and its independent commission (IC).

It is understood the ARL board could agree in principle on the constitution for the commission at its annual general meeting on Tuesday, but it can't be signed off on until the first eight commissionersare appointed.

Expansion would be an issue for the commission. A decision about new clubs is expected midway through next season once the next television deal is negotiated.

As the next TV deal is tipped to inject up to $1 billion into the game, franchises including the Central Coast, Perth, central Queensland and Ipswich have targeted 2013 as the year for inclusion.

However, existing clubs want to ensure their financial security is guaranteed and NRL chief executive David Gallop said yesterday following the conference that there was no guarantee the game would move to 18 teams by 2013.

"As we've always said, expansion will only be possible if the club itself is viable and it adds something to the overall financial picture of the game," Gallop said

Bears general manager Greg Florimo said Central Coast had employed Coffey Commercial Advisory to finalise its bid.

"The CEOs are always going to be very cautious in this process based on them trying to protect their own asset, but in the end the commission is there to make strong and strategic decisions for the game," Florimo said.

"The decision will be left to them and if it recommends 2015 is a more likely time, it would be very disappointing based on the work and resources that we've put into the bid so far."

Western Australian Rugby League chief executive John Sackson also said it would be a setback if expansion was delayed.

The clubs are spot on - there is no point bringing in the Bears if it doesn't grow the pie. Sorry bears fans, you should get your club back, but only if a Sydney club goes under or relocates interstate.

They are a good short term option, but offer very little in terms of long term growth for the game - the AFL equivelant is the Tasmania team arguement.

Perth, 2nd NZ and 3rd SE Qld are all higher priorities.

The Bears are about as important as Adelaide or PNG. That is not very.

The self interest siren has just gone off!!!

Keep these club CEO's away from the crucial future decisions in the game.

Of course they don't want expansion. I know for a fact Searle is not keen on Perth or another Brisbane team. It's as obvious as the nose on your face that the Sydney clubs, particularly Manly, would not be in favour of the Bears.

Spot on.

exactly. unfortunately the clubs from a business perspective are always going to look afetr themselves rather than the game, there needs to be a balance between the two.

from a "feel good" perspective i'd love to think the bears can establish and flourish but i really dont see it happening. i think there are other aspects of expansion more important such as perth and qld. unfortunately there's still a large proportion of people in the game who believe league should be confined to the eastern states- in particular NSW and arent interested 9in growth elsewhere.

however i think sustainable expansion is the key to growing rugby league

Why?

Because they know that the Bears will add nothing and just take support away from another NSW clubs? Quick! Get them out they aren't acting for the good of the game!

This is why the NRL clubs need to be kept well away from the "Independent" Commission, yet the original deal gave them 100% ownership of the sport in Australia. Once that deal was scuppered by the ARL (thankfully), they came up with a compromised deal that still gives them the vast majority of the power.

Now we can see that they are pretending to talk expansion but are putting it off for at least five years and haven't even put any kind of bid process in place yet are already talking turkey about what franchises to include. THE EXISTING CLUBS SHOULD HAVE NO SAY IN THIS!

From all that I have seen and read there really isn't going to be all that much independence in the new commission. If the clubs are allowed to decide on issues such as when and where we expand then I have to ask what is this all for?

Sadly, the IC will be a joke. Same self-interested idiots - different titles.

These clubs are opposing expansion because they are too incompetent, after decades and decades, to manage their own finances.

The addition of extra teams that grows your exposure, your brand and your revenue streams - which makes TV exposure more attractive for sponsors - is an obvious step forward which competent operators (e.g. the AFL) understand and act upon.

Frankly, the NRL will be weaker whilst near-bankrupt, poorly run clubs are propped up like some sort of welfare scheme.
