CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

It will happen and then people will realise its a dumbarse idea devised by someone with the intellectual capacity of a squashed crab. Then we will go back to the normal number system and pedestrians like bunniesman will have a cupboard full of worthless jerseys (and whatever deviant gay sex toys he keeps there).

Awful idea.

I cringe whenever I see some try hard with the #23. Yes, that includes Warne. We know Mike was a great athlete. Let it go.

Positional jerseys are the way to go in my view. This aint B Ball. Save this crap for AFL B Ball wannabes.

I don't see the problem with personalized numbers and surnames. And the people talking about triple digit numbers are ridiculous, surely they'd restrict it to numbers 1-99. And as for explaining the game to newbies how is it too hard? Seriously if Hayne was wearing 23 and playing fullback you'd simply say he stands at the back and returns the football, he's the last line of defence. I even think it'll be easier to understand for a newbie because you'd watch and try to understand what he does instead of just thinking the fullback is the dude who runs around with the number 1 on his back. And as for people having a problem with jerseys changing every year part of the problem is low sales, they make a new jersey to get more customers so having individual numbers could help jerseys stay the same.

I'm definitely opposed to this.

Surely all of the personalised jerseys that people would buy, the players would have had the same number for the past 5-10 years anyway (Lockyer 6, Marshall 6, Hindmarsh 11, Civonceva 10, Farah 9, Dugan/Hayne 1, Inglis 4, Slater 1, Cronk 7).

At the start of the year why dont the people who manufacture the jerseys just offer the big players (maybe 3-5 from each team or whatever) with definite numbers.

And bring the f**king price down by 100$ while your at it. Capitalist arseholes

I think that'll be cool, I think they should have their names on them too. Good for merchandising, NBA makes a killing on jersey sales. And i reckon it'll probably make Rabs job alot easier imo.
How the f*ck would it sell more jerseys? "Oi Mum - I suddenly want A Dogs 666 Jumper now that Ennis is not a 12 anymore"

BunniesMan has been for this for a longtime. The fact that numbers are linked to positions in the modern game is geniused. We have fullbacks playing like haves, backrowers playing like centres etc etc. .
But the fullbacks are still fullbacks, are they not?

It's not about fixing it's about improving.
Its not about f*cking up for no reason either.

May aswell get rid of the f**kin numbers altogether if this goes ahead. What a farce.
Can players pick their own colours too?

I can imagine the pile of Brisbane jumpers with Inglis's number at the Brisbane tip, and the recievers winding up the poor sports store that bought them all.

And what of this scenario: Inglis joins Souffs - wants #4, because he was #4 in Melbourne. But hang on, Nathan Merrit has been #4 for years. Inglis says "I'm 4 or I'm going to Brisbane". Suddenly Merit is #19.................

And the sum of this great idea for sl? Some twat went for #23 because of Michael Jordan. Wow - that's a great result for changing RL tradition.

Keep the numbering system as is. Numbers should ALWAYS reflect the position. That way when I see No 16 on the field and it's a player I dont recognise, I at least know he's a benchie and he's probably replaced a forward.

Anyway, Souths would be f*cked because no one there can count higher than 10 unless they take their shoes off.

I was absolutely against this idea (see my post on the first page of this thread) but ive got to say im definately warming to it. From a merchandise point of view its great and id like to see players take their jersey number with them when they change clubs. Ive done a complete backflip on this one.

As far as I know, numbers of fans jerseys are not popular anymore. I recall my Eels jumper that I wore to the 81 GF had the number 3 on the back for Cronin. The 3 Eels jumper was Cronins - no one elses, the same way the 7 was Sterlings, the 7 Dogs jumper was Mortimers, the QLD 6 was Wallys. Over generations these things change -now the QLD 6 is Lockyers - but that jumper has significance because Lockyer has assumed the mantle that Wally forged in it.

I can imagine that when Ray Price played for Australia wearing the number 8 jumper that Ron Coote and Johnny Raper played in would have meant a huge amount.

We could throw that away so that player X can choose his girlfriends lucky number 3 weeks before she dumps him.

The only way they can do that is under the current system. Tonga, 4 at Canterbury becomes 4 at NQ because he is replacing whoever was in that spot before him.

Unless you can have 2 players on the same side with the same numbers.

We would also get to see which player has the biggest ego at each club. I'm sure there will be a #23 in every team.

geniused argument.

If you want to personalise jerseys use names, that way both sides of the argument are happy.

Positions are then left for noobs to learn the game and the structure easier plus traditionalists are happy, while each player is recognised in an even more personalised way. Also advertises players in the comp better eg. someone in Melbourne walking around in a Smith or Slater jersey gives the games stars a little bit more exposure where needed.

Win-Win, 2 birds one stone, etc etc.

They should phonetically spell each player's name on the back of the jersey- would be a real help for Rabs.

And the Bulldogs would be able to offer their supporters the opportunity to have personalised jerseys with the 18 on it.

Yeah but loudy the problem is...you're an idiot.

"A dogs 666 jumper"? Idiot. Numbers would be limited from 1-99.

People would buy jerseys with their favourite players on them. It would increase jersey sales and it's a thousand times better than teams changing their jerseys every year.

The numbers should have nothing to do with the positions because the positions themselves have changed so bloody much. Positions don't mean anything anymore.

Anyone lines up in the scrum. #6 and #7 is virtually the same thing. Some teams have 3 or 4 halfbacks in their first 13.

Basically every centre is a "centre/backrow".

Positions have gone out with the bathwater in the modern game. Let's stop linking them to numbers. Numbers should represent players, not positions. End of story.

Cant letters represent players? For Example, Inglis's jumper can have "Inglis" written on it?

If numbers are not going to represent positions, why have numbers? FFS you dont hear Dave Morrow calling "16 runs from dummy half, puts a little chip kick in and regathers, bumps off 52, gets it to 81, who steps around 11, passes it to 74 who scorreeesssssssss!" And then Wok "Yeah, 74 is so quick - he is a dead set certainty for a test jumper"

If Control suddenly entered a side in the NRL you may have a point.

Face it Bunniestranny, if a Melbourne fan wanted a Slater jumper, he's get a 1 put on it. How can that be made any easier?

This was tried in the SuperLeague war and there was a reason why it wasn't continued. It was crap.

Hate the idea. No way.
I'm old school in this sence.
Still remember when Reserve Grade were numbered 14-26 and under 21s were 27-39

Those that want it obviously cannot tell the difference between players. I guess for them there is a big chance of mistaking Dave Taylor for Chris Sandow, Fiu Fiu Moi Moi for Luke Burt and Sam Thaiday for Peter Wallace.

Here's a hint. Buy a copy of Big League - they have a key in each edition cleverly listing the names of players wearing each numbered jersey. You open it up to the Brisbane team list, look at No. 6, and then discover that it's Darren Lockyer. Difficult I know -which is why AFL dont use that system - but by completing high school it is reckoned that most people can work it out. IN fact, even Queensland have been using the system successfully for decades!

Failing that, ask your carer for help.

I am not opposed to names but think that would be better reserved for grand final jerseys to mark an achievement in that players career.

Stuff the 00-99 crap.
