Chad

To be fair, there’s certainly something in this. Chad isn’t really doing any of the fancy stuff, he’s just in the background, talking to the kids, making his tackles, putting up his shitty kicks (but he’s getting joy as they’ve got an absolute weapon in the air in that young kid), doing his drop offs etc…. He’s doing all the boring plodder stuff, to a decent standard, as he always has - but he’s freeing up the likes of Drinkwater, Dearden and their strike players from having to do any of the thinking or boring stuff. Chad gets them to a position and then they play footy.
basically the no frills organising half back stuff that no one notices because it's not flashy enough.
to think we were paying the guy 550k!

He does the basics that you don't want to be paying $800k for.

He has fewer line break assists than superstars like Connor Watson,Tesi Niu, Shaun Johnson, and Moses Mbye.

He doesn't have some great outside backs to take advantage of some average cross field kicks, he is offering the Cowboys very little.

Chad is absolutely killing it this year. He has the Cowboys playing the best footy they've ever played as a team.

This is a very funny post. I'm sure the 3rd placed cowboys with a renewed attack AND defence are wishing they had signed Shaun Johnson and Moses Mbye for the line break assist stats! Who gives a shit about those kinda numbers when you're winning games off the back of a game plan that is being stuck to for the first time in five or six seasons?

A lot has clicked for the cows this year and Townsend, flashy or no, $800k or no, LBA numbers or no, is a key part of that.. loved to hate him in Sharks colours but he helped contribute to a side that had his spine in Ennis, Maloney and Barba playing arguably their best ever footy.. and look at Robson, Dearden and Drinkwater up there this year.

Best halfback in the game! (I kid don't kill me)

The point of the post and use of stats was to show that the Cowboys success this season has little to do with Chad. It's really funny you bring up the 2016 season, when his biggest contributions to that Grand Final team was being pushed out of the way for the opening try, and getting tackled high. He was not directing that team around the field - that was Ennis and Maloney.

Cmon mate thats doing him a disservice. He won us plenty of games in the first half. And this coming from a Chad basher

Chad has always done his job. Chad's problem is not always being able to take games by the horns and help win it for them team in the way a Cleary or Reynolds can, however, when the team is firing, he always does what needs to be done to achieve the goal.
When the team around him is sub par (particularly in the forwards) he just doesn't seem to be able to find a way to have an Influence in changing momentum.

He has always been a good halfback, just not influential.

Tend to agree with Azzah, but would say above average not quite good.

Problem is he thinks he is upper echelon and carries on as such.

Anyway it really is the ideal situation. He seems glad he left, Cowboys are glad he's there and most fans are glad he's gone.

Wins all around.

Sorry, as a Cowboys fan, this is complete bullshit. He, along with Payten is the main reason for our success this year.

The coaches and players absolutely love Chad and have constantly mentioned the influence he has on the team and how much he has helped our young players.

Individually, his organisation and kicking game this year have been masterful. Oh, and he's currently outright second in the NRL for try assists.

I didn't watch him that closely for the Sharks but it seems like he might be hitting his career best form right now. He has found a great coach who believes in him and has identified his skills as the missing ingredient for the Cowboys.

It has worked out perfectly for everyone - Chad can focus on exactly what he's good at and not worry about the areas where he falls short. What he's doing takes huge pressure off the rest of the team and gives us direction, which helps the talented players around him shine and be the best they can be.

Summed it up really well thanks for coming in with the Cows fan POV! All of us here got really really burned by a few years of Chad's poor seasons when our attack was stifled so the scars run deep in some.

Watching him play up there after watching the last few seasons he's been the exact right signing for the Cows.. I was suss in the pre-season but seeing the whole Cows squad improve (and him improving with them) has been great to watch and you guys deserve a solid season.

Hope Cows can keep it up as the draw gets harder and Origin eats away at the squad l

Do you know where the Cowboys dominate? Running metres. That's not Chad.
His try assists are from kicks to players that are very strong in the air, in an era where defensive teams can't really defending a good jumping winger.

Chad is a really nice guy, and he has always been great with fans and teammates - but he is an average footballer.

Nice bloke, shame about the beer.
I can only say it was of great relief he left and happy he’s performing up North.
Now put him in origin to give him a crack at another bucket list item

How many halfbacks are considered good without their team making metres?

this thread is gold
Not sure how genuine you are there , but it IS. Rugby league may well be the simple game some claim, Or maybe there's some more subtle and complex nuances to keep us all interested and Arguing . I mean just for starters, Imagine a game where smaller guys get bumped off easily trying to tackle big behemoths, but as game goes on the little guys can make them look like clumsey sloths. Combination of Skill Strength Speed ,Tactics , Human nature, We got rid of a player cause his strengths were not what our team needed and he couldnt adapt. He goes to a different team and is just what they need. If the Game was all that simple we would have nothing to talk about.
