Nine will ignore the tournament now. Actually, they will CONTINUE to ignore the tournament!

Business as usual at Nein. I'm looking forward to catching Seven's online coverage. Wasn't sure how I'd catch games in China otherwise.

Seven will broadcast all RLWC2013 matches - which runs from October 26th- November 30th - live on 7mate as part of an all-encompassing agreement covering broadcast and subscription television rights, IPTV, interconnected TV, catch-up TV, HbbTV, pay per view, video on demand and digital rights, including online and mobile.

You bloody beauty! All games live. Hopefully since it's on 7mate it will also be broadcasted in HD as well. Nevertheless, I will definitely be making the effort to watch as many games as I can. This coverage is far better than even the RLWC that was held in Australia in 2008.

This is so much better than what the status quo would've been with Ch9. Last time it was in the Northern Hemisphere in 2000, Ch9 only televised the opening match between Australia vs England, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final. This time, I think Ch9 would've only televised the opening match vs England, and only finals matches involving Australia. The last time Ch7 broadcasted top tier rugby league was the 1993 Trans-Tasman test series between Australia and New Zealand (Graeme Hughes was the caller). All rugby league on FTA has been on Ch9 since then.

I'm somewhat surprised that Ch7 got the rights as I thought all rep games (S.O.O and tests) were also incorporated into the current NRL rights deal. I'm really looking forward to Ch7's coverage and maybe - just MAYBE - this is the start of them slowly acquiring more RL coverage and hence breaking Ch9's monopoly on FTA rugby league. I don't know if Ch7 will simply just take the commentary from BBC or Premier Sports who are providing the tv coverage for the tournament, but as some have said it would be better if Ch7 could poach Vossy (whether or not Sky Sports will give them permission is another question) and send him over there to call some matches.

The bottom line is such a deal would've never occurred had Gallop still been involved with the game (as evidenced by the 2008 RLWC's abysmal coverage).

The last time channel seven broadcast RL I think was origin in the early 90's

They did some Tests in the early 90s too I think. Maybe.

'91 Trans-Tasman series, '92 home Ashes series vs Great Britain and '93 Trans-Tasman series were the last RL matches Ch7 covered. They got to televise test matches in the early '90s when Ch10 - who previously had the rights - became insolvent in '91 and hence had to offload their RL coverage (Ch9 got the Winfield Cup for peanuts and State of Origin, whilst Ch7 got the test matches although Ch9 somehow managed to get the 1992 RLWC final at Wembley. Dunno how they got that)

please no Bruce mcavaney....
the pommie commentary team would be ok.... stevo. ...to be fair..:)

If by Stevo you mean Mike Stephenson, no he won't be commentating as Sky Sports UK - which televise the Super League - didn't get the rights (BBC got the FTA rights, Premier Sports Network got the PayTV rights). I was surprised Sky missed out altogether since not only did they have the exclusive rights in the UK to show all matches from the 2008 tournament in Australia, they even sent their own commentary team - Hemmings and Stevo - out to Australia to call the matches. I believe they were the PayTV broadcaster in the 2000 tournament in the UK (with BBC covering the major matches).

This.

Most of us have very long-term memories of their extremely shabby treatment of the last RLWC held here in 2008. Absolutely disgraceful and if the 2017 RLWC is held down under again, I hope Ch9 don't get their grubby hands anywhere near the most prestigious and oldest World Cup of the rugby codes (suck that Union).

Not only that, but on top of that you had people like Raaaay trying to sabotage the tournament saying that international RL was a complete waste of time, didn't contribute anything to the game in the days leading up to the Australia/NZ official tournament opener at the SFS, as well as pre-game and after the game. He was largely one of the reasons the opening game didn't sell out. How the NRL/Gallop allowed him to get away with such damaging comments when he was paid to commentate and hence promote the tournament instead is a disgrace. It's the equivalent of being paid by your boss to promote a product at your store only to tell inquiring customers "Oh, don't buy the product. It's crap. You don't need it". To rub insult into injury even further, 2UE actually offered more for the radio rights than 2GB yet they were completely disgregarded and 2GB got the rights on a silver platter. Another one of Gallop's infamous screw ups.

The biggest laugh about what an abysmal failure Nein has now become as a sports broadcaster is how Ch9 televised the matches on delay (only the final was televised live) and stretched out the coverage by so much that Fox Sports delayed coverage - which began well after Ch9's telecast - actually finished earlier than the Ch9 coverage:lol: That pretty much sums up the complete utter disdain Nein had for the tournament in the first place

Another good point that you forgot to mention is that this means there's no possibility of Raaaaaaay being sent over there to call matches. I feared this may've happened like Ch9 did in the 2011 RUWC semi-final when they sent him to call the All Blacks/Wallabies match, and it's further kick in the gut to union ppl that he has admitted he hasn't watched a union game since then. That's a complete insult to the genuine union fans that they sent over someone who never gave a stuff about the sport in the first place, and sums up the Ch9 mentality in a nutshell.

This, while I'm not a huge fan of Union anymore, I did watch bits and pieces of the '11 RUWC and 9's treatment of it was absolutely abysmal. Even worse than their RL coverage, if that's possible. Hadley's RU calling was even worse than his RL calling, which I didn't think was possible- he had NFI what was going on.

On topic, this is good news (it bodes well for next rights battle too), although I really hope the whole tournament isn't stuck on 7mate- will NSW, ACT and QLD at least get the tournament on the main channel?

I'm not a Union fan either, but occasionally will have a look at major matches (e.g. World Cup, Lions tour like last night's match etc.).

I agree with you that Ch9's coverage of rugby union - during their very short stint they had the coverage for, before offloading the rights to Ch10 this year because they couldn't be half-arsed covering the game anymore - was nothing short of D-grade. I remember all the union fans really giving it to Ch9 on their facebook page during the World Cup after Ch9 spruiked the tournament ad nauseum in the lead up to it saying how good the coverage was going to be etc., only to completely botch the telecasts. No wonder why Fox Sports got huge ratings for that tournament - nearly all the genuine union fans ditched Ch9.

And you're right. I did watch that semi-final and Raaaaaaaaay had absolutely no idea what was happening at times. Not to mention, he tried to call the match RL style which didn't work, and constantly referred to players as "No. 10, No.11 etc." not realising the players have something called a NAME.

On topic, this is good news (it bodes well for next rights battle too), although I really hope the whole tournament isn't stuck on 7mate- will NSW, ACT and QLD at least get the tournament on the main channel?

A few years ago, I would've never dreamed that a day that all matches would be televised on FTA could be possible. This announcement, as you said, bodes very well for the 2017 RLWC rights (Australia or New Zealand being the favourites to host the tournament) and gives me more hope that the international game is getting back to the level it was pre-SL war.

Regarding the tournament being confined to 7Mate, I don't think it matters that much since nearly all homes now have the digital channels (given lots of areas have already switched off their analogue signal) as well as the fact that all of the matches are in the early hours of the morning. I will be happy for this tournament to be exclusively on 7Mate if it means getting HD broadcasts in return and not Ch9's 20th century SD coverage (assuming that BBC or Premier Sports Network - the host broadcasters whom the other international countries will be taking the tv coverage from - are broadcasting in HD).

Another point: given the matches will be live nationwide, that means the sandgroppers out west will be getting the matches at a convenient time. The 12:30am AEDST start for the opening game means it will be 9:30pm in Perth. Hopefully this will give a lot of frustrated league supporters out there (frustrated in the sense of being neglected from watching RL on FTA at a decent time for many years) more incentive to tune in. I like the fact that the RFL have opted for more day games in this tournament, meaning not only a higher chance of attracting fans during late-October/late-November when the weather is pretty crap in the UK, but it is on at a decent time in Australia

Well considering that in alot of markets analogue is now a thing of the past having it on 7Mate isn't a big deal

That's the way I like it, uh huh ,uh uh.:music1:
The RLWC was already profitable according to reports handed to the RLIF in April this year. This is more coin to add to the kitty.

Ch9 = Karma.

And to those who say this wouldnt happen under Gallop:
The RLWC is being organised under the RFL banner, although the organisation is set up as not for profit. They (rlwc2013) chose to employ IMG to broker the tv rights deal for them.
When the ARL organised the 08 wc, not sure who was on the wc committee, and no idea how much ch 9 paid. But the tourny did end up making millions either way.

Good stuff, I just hope that 7 doesn't do a job on the tournament like it done a job on Soccer or 9 done a job on Union with Roooooy Harrrrrrrrrrdly by sending over ex afl players to cover it. (please god, do not allow this to happen)

Excellent news!

All games live - great for the rusted on league fans who will get up at 5am to watch the games, but hopefully there are replays or reruns of highlights packages as well for the more casual league fan that doesn't know or care about the international scene. This will lay the ground work for the next WC in Aus and NZ (or South Africa lol).

Also shows some people at 7 have an interest in broadcasting rugby league still, which is positive.

Only prob for me is 7mate rather than 7 or 7two which are shown on Foxtel. I'll have to buy a recorder as I won't be able to record to the Fox IQ box.

Apart from that - good someone has told 9 to stick it. They are painful to watch and disrespectful to the game.

So all 28 games are live on FTA?

Brilliant, if so. That's better than the coverage of every Union WC and the last two League WCs.
