Brisbane to get new NRL team, existing clubs at risk of axing
Send via Email

Cronulla, Manly and the Gold Coast are at risk of being axed from the NRL as the Nine Network pushes for a new Brisbane rugby league team.

The broadcaster's director of sport Tom Malone wants to axe one existing club to make way for a new club in the Queensland capital by 2023 with the final call to be made as early as December this year.

News Corp reports that the Sharks, Sea Eagles and the Titans are the sides who are most at risk of the chop.

"That could come from another team being relocated there, or better still another club being discontinued and a new club established in Brisbane," Malone said.

"In a perfect world you'd probably have one or two less teams.

"What clubs should go? I'm not going to get into that one. It's a hard decision but probably one that needs to be made in the longer term interests of the game."

Malone says he prefers the option of axing an existing club rather than adding another club because having 17 teams and a bye each week would increase costs without generating any "incremental revenue".

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg reportedly met with Queensland Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk on Friday to discuss a new Brisbane team.

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany supports a second team in the River City but doesn't believe in axing an existing club.

"They love their rugby league in Brisbane and it seems a natural fit," Mr Delany told News Corp.

"You get that inter-city rivalry which enhances tribalism and that's ultimately what we want.

"It's all about generating more fans and bigger TV audiences. I don't know if you'd get that real tribal traction with rugby league in Perth that you'd get in Brisbane."

Haha. First time in years the eels are in the finals and not competing for the spoon. And fans are declaring the clubs self importance
Parra are safe due to the size of their supporter base and having the beaut new ground, paid for by taxpayers throughout the state of course. Dragons and Dogs are both well supported. Rabbitohs too. Roosters are well connected and very successful on-field but very close to the Rabbitohs. We should be OK because of our location with tentacles into Central Western NSW and status as a development club but I'm not so sure. Wests Tigers have a following but no area to call home. Sharks do well on-field but could be swallowed up by the Dragons. Manly also mostly do well on-field but their ground is decrepit and their finances suspect, although that hasn't been heard of since they've been winning, and they occupy an important geographical area. The easy decision might be the Titans.

The real resistance to this plan isn’t going to come from Sydney.

*Sigh* Here we go again with this liberal interpretation of the truth that somehow the Broncos are going to fight this tooth and nail. When has the club ever spoken out against Brisbane 2?

The balls on this guy. His team has already lost the cricket, is totally complicit in getting his viewers to turn off the nrl, with his terrible commentary team, and now wants to destroy a club for growth? People would rather pay money to watch the footy on fox, than to listen to gus, johns etc and their opinionated, agenda driven shite. Get rid of them and you have growth! Turf a team and you alienate hundreds of thousands of people. This merkin must be on drugs!

The article in today's Telegraph was written by Phil Rothfield. Says the idea is being pushed by Channel 9 as they want a second Brisbane club, but no expansion to 17 teams. Teams mentioned are Cronulla, Manly and Gold Coast. They want it for the next tv deal which is to start in 2023.

Foxtel are cited as also wanting a second Brisbane team but not at the expense of an existing club.

yep this is an organisation that would rather broadcast 13th vs 15th place sydney dead rubbers 2 weeks out from the finals rather than games that actually matter. Hopeless organisation that should be ignored.

That’s not actually channel 9’s fault. That’s the fans who screamed and yelled that they needed the draw to be released with days and times a year in advance to arrange travel....

Titans can go for all I care. Sport doesn’t work there it’s painfully obvious by now. No sporting tradition, supporters or even a soul

There’ll be no change whilst Greenbergs in charge, he hasn’t the vision or strategy to deliver it. Beattie came in on a ticket of expansion but has only succeeded in getting a report commissioned. He’ll be gone by end of year and we’ll be back to status quo until 2023 when the talk of expansion for the 2028 deal will begin all over again.

In terms of this BS story the clubs now have perpetual licenses meaning they can only be kicked out or moved if they go bust. Journalists really are sht at their jobs!
