Channel 9 wants to kill of a sydney club

That’s not actually channel 9’s fault. That’s the fans who screamed and yelled that they needed the draw to be released with days and times a year in advance to arrange travel....
What is to stop the two Friday games and the two Sunday games being chosen around November, with provision that they could be switched a month or so out. ie 2pm Sunday with 4pm, or 6pm Friday with 8pm. This won't mess up travel arrangements.

Is your club profitable? If not, will it be in the next 2 years?

If the answer to either or both of those is no, step right up to the block. There, done.
Is the storm profitable?

Or is it still being fed by newscorp?

Is the Gold Coast profitable?

Why in the 21st century with billion dollar TV deals should clubs be relying on leagues clubs?

yep this is an organisation that would rather broadcast 13th vs 15th place sydney dead rubbers 2 weeks out from the finals rather than games that actually matter. Hopeless organisation that should be ignored.
Yep. We need more panthers games....

No NL sold it of years ago but I'm not sure whether part of the deal was for NL to continue funding the Storm, I'm sure that deal has run out by now???

And the ARL kept funding it....

In 2012, the Australian Rugby League Commission guaranteed $26.5 million over the next six years to Melbourne Storm with the express aim to being “to keep the game thriving in Victoria”.

In March 2012, Roy Masters remarked that the Storm were losing 8 million a year.

In August 2013, Fairfax reported that the Storm had been overspending to the tune of between $2 million and $5 million for 15 years. This shortfall had been financed by News Ltd and the amount spent by the club does not seem to be falling since the salary cap scandal in 2010.

The Storm football club spent about $20 million a year, or about $2-$4 million more than most other clubs except for the wealthy Broncos. The new consortium of owners, led by New Zealander Bart Campbell, were projecting the club will break even in five years, which is a long time to be losing money.

In June 2015, Fairfax quoted Storm owner Bart Campbell.

“Our lofty aspiration is to be solvent – that meaning cash comes in, cash comes out and at the end of the year the books balance. We are not in that position yet, but we have funds so it’s not all woe is me, but we believe over time there will be a business in this town called Melbourne Storm that is solvent and if we make profits we will re-invest them.”

In August 2015, The Australian Financial Review reported that the Storm turned over about $25 million annually, a figure that put it in the top half of the league, and had a membership base of about 15,000 but average crowds of about 14,000.

The clubs owners also bought a local hotel with hope the facility will offset continued financial losses for the Storm, which effectively breaks even each season but only after receiving an additional $26.5 million over six years as part of the terms of News Corp, once owner of the club, exiting its half-stake in the NRL in 2012.

On September 30th, 2016 Storm partowner Matthew Tripp was quoted in the Australian Financial Review

“I think we are at the break-even stage now and we can be profitable next year,” Tripp told AFR Weekend. “But we are not necessarily in this for the money. This club has been built on a great culture … we’ve got those legends playing for us and a fantastic coach in Craig Bellamy. The leadership they show is fantastic, and they really set the standards for the younger guys coming through.”

It wouldn’t work for the games that are broadcast from NZ.

And they do love a 6pm Friday warriors game.

The article in today's Telegraph was written by Phil Rothfield. Says the idea is being pushed by Channel 9 as they want a second Brisbane club, but no expansion to 17 teams. Teams mentioned are Cronulla, Manly and Gold Coast. They want it for the next tv deal which is to start in 2023.

Summary of article - https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...b/news-story/34d3937fb4fc037966322bb2fdc75b42

Foxtel are cited as also wanting a second Brisbane team but not at the expense of an existing club.

I can see why 9 would want another Brisbane team, but why the objection to 17/18 teams?

Nine are only going to show 3 games a week. And of those 6 teams featured, both Brisbane teams will get a start 80% of the time. I don’t see any logic in that argument. Surely any extra game would be funded by Fox in any media deal negotiations.

I hope no team get relocated. My AFL team was merged(Fitzroy) with Brisbane and even though they were successful I switched codes to follow Melbourne`s new team Melbourne Storm.I had been going to see Fitzroy play every week since I was a kid and a I was lucky enough to be able to go to alot of interstate games. I wish that supporters would go to the games and support their teams then the NRL will stop all this stupid talk of relocating teams. I want to see Manly in Manly, Cronulla in Cronulla etc etc.

I would guess as the extra game has no benefit to ch9, in fact it will probably make fox even more attractive!

Because the TV deal on its own isn't enough to lift every club, and how else are clubs going to make money? Nobody turns up to the games anymore. What should happen is the NRL need to stand the f**k up for themselves a little more and take back control of their competition and its booking.

Because they were being propped up by Newscorp and then the arlc.

They can't be allowed to fail no matter what.

Fans can help their clubs by turning up to support their teams. I drive from sadelaide to Melbourne to watch my team about 5 times a year( work permitting) and I have been a member since 99.
Say if there was an Adelaide team would you have supported the Storm?
