I'm not too fussed with the result. The Hunt and Widdop combo obviously needs work and without those 2 clicking it's going to be pretty irrelevant who we put in other positions.

This will be a good opportunity for them both to put some work into their plays and how they work together on the field. Additionally it will be a good opportunity for them to work with Cam and Duft to form a great spine combo. I think it will take a few games in before we see the fruits of this setup anyway.

Additionally we saw last year that the game means nought in the grand scheme of things. We played the same ol same ol game in last years CS and most on here were slitting their wrists before the season even started. Then round 1 came and we were playing a different style. I honestly don't think they are looking at it as anything more than a hit out and an opportunity to work out a couple of combos/kinks and players securing their spots. Besides, for the Hull game I saw a couple of players not in top gear - which tells me it was just to blow out the cobwebs - and I think this game will be treated the same.
I am thinking like this in a way.
It’s great if we come out of the blocks like last year but I would also prefer a back end of the year spike instead of capitulation as we have a habit of doing. To get this we need a team with a strong spine combination that, let’s face it, is still forming. That, by no means, represents less pressure on the team to perform but an expectation that fades out aren’t acceptable with a team ‘the coach wants’. I hoping that within 3-4 rounds we a resembling a team on the up, not a clueless rabble.

Agreed LG. We also have to remember that Hunt only started training with the team in January - and probably the first couple of weeks would be getting to know the team and the club etc. That leaves probably only 4 weeks of seriously working with the rest of spine to get stuff together.

I could see him hanging back in the Hull game and not really playing much of a role. He did OK but you would expect much more - just in his own attack and in combination with the rest of the spine.

Like I said, I'd expect it to start to take shape early in the season - as you said, you would hope to see some good coming from it by around 4 or 5.

I as everyone else , would like the Dragons to take home the Shield to where it belongs - the Taj Mahal . But more importantly we need to hold tough against the bunnies as you can bet your last dollar , that slamming Sam and his bros will want to prove that they are the toughest pack in the NRL . The boys will step up to the next level for this match as there is pride at stake also , expecting a big improvement from the red and whites .

Here's hoping that we do better than we did last year in the CS. Last year was diabolical!
Yes let's all hope so but if we don't and people come out and say it will be a long season then maybe some other people might just give them some credit for once.
If we don't put on some high quality attacking football with variations we have not seen before and we just see more of the same old plays then take it from me it will be a very long season indeed.

We had plenty of world cup representatives so I don't expect the combinations will peak for 4 to 6 weeks.

Against Hull, JDB and Frizz didn't play, so I expect the defence will stiffen.

Cam McInnes through plenty of very ordinary passes. Some forward, some very high. That affected service to Hunt.

Greater focus this week at dummy half, plus extra ball sessions will see Hunt/Widdop/Dufty combination improve.

May take 4-6 weeks, but once it clicks they will create enough space for our three quarters to score plenty of tries.

Expect to see Dufty and Widdop trailing the forwards through the middle waiting for a good offload.

When Hunt decides to run and not pass, expect to see him cause Havoc.

I predict our spine will overcome the ineptitude of our coaching staff, particularly if Mann gets a run in the centres.

All valid points but overcoming the coaching staff is a huge hurdle, I just hope we can jump that high.
Not sure we have 4 - 6 weeks at best we have 2 because this season will be heavily contested for positions 5-12 so we best use this trial correctly.

Good luck with your Grand Final this weekend guys. :D

First 40 minutes should be good standard. I expect it to taper off a bit from there, as it normally does with the coaches changing up key positions and giving fringe players a bit of game time.

Regardless, its good to have some footy back on the TV on the weekend and something to talk about during the week.

Here's hoping for an exciting game and absolutely no injuries.

Looking over this squad, I reckon we have them in almost every starting position

Dufty vs Johnston - W (only just, because I still don't think Johnston is a natural FB)
Kennar vs Nightingale - W
Hunt vs Mann - W
Gagai vs Lafai - L
Jennings vs Macdonald - W
Walker vs Widdop - W
Douehi vs Hunt - W
Burgess vs Graham - W
Cook vs McInnes - D (draw, can't pick it)
Nicholls vs Vaughan - W
Sutton vs Frizell - W
Fuimaono vs Sims - W
Burgess vs De Belin - L

Not going to bother with the reserves. I don't know a lot about their depth players and I think our boys like Kerr, Leilua, Host, Aitken, Lomax etc have it over most of them anyway

Not bad a line up considering Souths have out injured the players below and a bench with Farah, Gurgess, Musgrove and Clark all experienced NRL players.

Pretty sure Hunt was under instruction to play it simple it had Mary written all over it probably same next week ..then donkeys here I am .......try and stop me

Think that would be the case for most of the team and probably the same again for this weekend. To be fair, there's no value in this game

I think that would be the instructions to most of the players...I don't expect much different this weekend either. Doesn't bother me as it's just a trial.

Looking at the Rabbits line up, there's a lot of inexperience and not many big names. If we can't get over this side then you would be worried how they could beat the top sides like Melbourne, Roosters, Cronulla, Cowboys, Parramatta IMO
