I'm a dogs fan and I found it amusing. We need to have thicker skins.

Seriously, every time there is a tiny bit of negative media, a negative post or a joke where we are the focus, we have a cry. It was funny!!!

Personally, I'm not particularly offended by it. I didn't see it, and I know it's a piss-take. I've seen the e-mails and had a laugh. I joke with my friends who I know will understand where I'm coming from. But I can understand how some people could be offended by having it thrust in their face like that on national television.

I really don't understand why people are surprised that some people were offended and pissed off. After all, that's pretty much what the Chaser set out to do each and every week on their show. They piss people off by removing unsuspecting people from their comfort zone on national TV. It's what makes their show such a success. How many people get pissed off every week on their show? Why should the Bulldogs fans be any different?

I think one of the reasons the police were pissed off about it is because they see it as undermining what they're trying to achieve.

From all reports, the fans were well behaved last night, despite this 'skit' being performed.

Just on the point that this type of satire is targeting the public's perception of Bulldogs fans, I understand the point. But as you can see from this thread, most people see it as having a crack at the Bulldogs fans. Whatever their intention, it seems to have missed the mark with a lot of people.

I don't think its surprise as much as amusement. Perhaps you've noticed that the vast majority of people who have a complaint about this are Bulldogs fans. Doesn't that say something?

Someone already mentioned that if it was AFL copping ribbing, would the same people be so precious?

Understood, but that doesn't change the fact that the people getting pissed off have missed the point.

So they arrest him and become part of the theatre. It'll be interesting when it actually goes to court. Then again, probably not.

Look, I was at the game and for the most part, the police were just doing their job. That is, standing around, looking serious, and offering protection. The problem was, there never looked like being a real threat. When referee Steve Clark was escorted off, with a virtual regiment of police officers up front, at the rear and on either side, it had overeaction written all over it. As it turned out, the arrest of this joker was the highlight of the night. The acting deputy police commisioner then overeacted in the media, effectively helping to beat it up. Whether they like it or not, the poilce became part of the show.

What are you suggesting ibeme, that the Chaser fella was actualy inciting violence? And it was just good fortune which stopped it escalating?

Fair dinkum, after the game there were that many people were trying to get into the club that the front of the Taj was like the last days of Saigon. That had a greater potential for trouble than anything I saw all night. It turned out OK because no one in the crowd lost their cool. But for a little while it was a crush and disorderly with the doormen out of their depth. And not a cop in sight... they were busy on the lookout for comedians.

Was he actually arrested for offensive behaviour??

and willow you have to wonder why the doggy fans on her are really annoyed at the fact some moron thought he'd be funny as to go to a game which involved the doggies and hand out that kinda stuff... of course there would be people who took it the wrong way mainly the people working their butts off trying to control crowd violence, they probably saw the funny side of it but give em a break...

Whats next for the chaser boys giving away free flights to lebanon??

You can go around charging comedians. The world will think...

1. we dont care about freedom of speech
2. we don't have a sense of humour

It's a dangerous precedent, and whats stopping the government of the day, hiding behind such random decisions, while really just wanting to shut down debate and criticism.

your allowed freedom of speech just aslong as you dont defame or slander a person or country.. so its not really freedom of speech then....

i thought it was funy but you have to see where the people who dont think its funny are comming from....

By who? Violent Bulldogs fans?

If so, then who has the problem Moffo?

Tell me, do you think Norman Gunston is offensive to people who cut themselves while shaving?

he was provoking people

an offence that is actionable by arrest (police officers descretion)

Thanks

Please call the cops if you have more queries
Provide a link to the legislation against provoking people which renders the offender liable to arrest (at the police officer's discretion) or copy and paste the section.

For the record... I hope the NRL ban this dickhead from all NRL fixtures for a very long time.....
I've always wondered about the effectiveness of life bans in the NRL. Ir sounds good on paper but how can it be enforced? Two months without showing your face and you could walk into any game without a second glance from security. The numbers are just too big to scrutinise everyone. Then there's fake ID, growing or shaving facial hair, glasses, hats, the list is endless.

Someone raised a good point in a comment on an online newspaper...

Offensive conduct is defined by the courts as "behaviour calculated to wound the feelings, arouse anger or resentment or disgust or outrage in the mind of a reasonable person."

So was what Chas did designed to 'wound the feelings, arouse anger or outrage?' One article said the majority of fans took it light heartedly. If this is true I'd say the majority of fans' reactions would be judged as the reasonable person's reaction and therefore it wasn't offensive conduct.
Well put. It will be interested to see how it goes if they contest the charge and it goes to hearing.

Yes, and yes.

'Give them a break' - is that code for let them have their whinge?
Or is it code for shaduppa you face?

Y2Eel, I fight for you're right to disagree with me.

Apparently it is an offence to mock media beat ups of crowd violence, but it is not an offence to scream 'f**k St George' in my face while I'm with my son... that happened recently at a match in Brisbane and some Qld cops saw it all. Perhaps they had other things on their mind, such as Shaun Timmins for hopping into a street sweeper.

Yeah yeah I know... irrelevant. But it helps in keeping things in perspective. I already mentioned the nonsense that was going on down at the club afterwards and not a cop in sight. Its doesnt take Einstein to work out that a fair portion of the crowd would be heading there. In fairness, perhaps the police were up the road and had their hands full, protecting state rail property.

The best thing about the whole situation is that the law doesn't find it funny either and that is far more important than any of us here on this forum.
Not the law, the police. Or, more precisely, some of the police. I've no doubt that plenty thought it was a cack.

The Magistrate will decide what the law thinks, if it goes that far.

Excuse me? You made an unsubstantiated and unsourced allegation about rape jokes. I was asking for a firm source, to see the context of the alleged joke, before deciding if I agreed or disagreed with you.

If you are unable to back it up, I can only assume that you made it up.

Thanks for the offer, but you'll find I'll do that when I decide, not when you tell me.
