Cherry-Evans asks Manly for a release.

Pretty much. I don't disagree that he is worth more money and by offering a better deal now the club stands a better chance of signing him long term. However, if tehy signed him for $250k per season over 3 years and he turned out to be a dud should the club be allowed to turn around 2 weeks into the second season and say we want to cut your salary back to $80k because that's all we feel you're worth and if you went to another club that's about all you'd get? No way, people have to live with the decisions they make, no other club wanted him so Manly put a lot of faith in him to sign him for more than 1 or 2 seasons.

Exactly !

I agree he deserves more money but he can't just complain when he has two years left on his contract, it's not fair to the club who have a set plan of who they want to retain and who they want to let go.

If they do give him an upgrade then some players are going to have to leave the club prematurely so its basically going to throw a spanner in the works in regards to their retention plans. Also the players that would have to leave would be completely uprooting their lives because he decided he wanted more money before his contract is up.

Manly would be stupid to let him go and he'll most probably get the upgrade too especially since he's such a great player but geez it's absolute b/s that a player can just do this.

You could've kept all those guys surely? Didn't you shed those guys to help you squeeze in Sandow for 550k a year? Also signed Tonga.

They made room for Chris Walker and Carl Webb. Nice work troll job by Anderson.

I never said it was easy to free up cash but its their Job, if they cant do it then why shouldnt they get the blame? Should DCE get the blame for looking after himself financially? Should the other club get the blame for trying to improve?

And again, all clubs lose players due to cap issues, Penrith cant even keep their average juniors most the of time cause our cap management has been so bad.

And stop blaming Dessie you weak merkins, he is at another club. If they allowed him to f**k the cap up so badly that they free up any money then thats their own fault.

You're pretty dim. Have a nice day.

I get your point here but its just not realistic to expect the kid not to try and look after himself, i dont blame the kid for it and i wouldnt if i was a Manly fan, i would be pissed but not really at him.

This is hypothetical anyway, they have said they plan to keep him so its up to them to make him happy to stay. IMO not upgrading him would be a bad move if they want to keep him.

Can someone bring me up to speed here please.

How long is DCE under contract with Manly for?

Around about how many dollars will he earn each season as the contract stands now?

Thanks

Losing players so you can sign players from other clubs doesn't count as losing players due to salary cap constraints. Make sense moron?

It all comes under salary cap management ffs.

And id say they lost some of those players to keep Hayne.

You call me dim but you think only clubs that have won premierships recently face cap pressure.

Not sure of length but the article says he is on 85k this season and 125k next.

Off-contract for 2012

Ben Farrar, Jorge Taufua, Matt Ballin, Liam Foran, Darcy Lussick, Michael McDougall, Michael Oldfield, Brett Stewart, Dean Whare, David Williams

A few of these guys are going to have to be released if we want to re-sign DCE and Foran

I sincerely doubt Parramatta had the foresight to shed Mateo and Inu in May of 2010, and Lowrie at the end of 2009, thinking they were going to need cap space for Tonga and Sandow in 2012

I wonder what Kieran will say if the club goes back to him and says we can offer you the 14% you're asking for but we'll have to shed some players to make it happen. One of those players has to be Liam.

Given Lussick's potential asking price (7 clubs are apparantly chasing him) I'd say unfortunately let him go. Wtf is McDougall? I'd hate to see Ballin go but we can't just cut rookies because there still needs to be 25 blokes in the squad and hooker can be covered by Buhrer. Stewart is the only other one that would make an impact on the cap so the harsh reality is he might have to go.

Yep. If Manly must shed players Lussick should be the first to go.

You mention Stewart, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on him Firey-there's all these rumours of him considering 4 year deals at the Saints. You'd have to think that won't happen with his injury past. Hell of a player

If the asking price is actually 2.4mill over 4 years then I think many clubs would baulk at that. He's a hell of a player but his knees could give out at any time. I would love him to be a 1 club player and go down as a Manly legend alongside blokes like Eadie and Vautin but he has done the club proud and delivered 2 premierships, if he needs to go in order to earn big dollars then I'd have no problem with that. The Dragons have said they're not interested but how many times have we heard clubs say similar only to announce the signing days or weeks later? He could end up at the Roosters or (heaven forbid) the Dogs.

Thought Brett was going to be announced by the Dragons today.

Might be saving it for the 6pm news tommorrow night.

I would prefer to keep the Stewart brothers, Foran, and DCE. I would sacrifice every other player on the team to keep them, but if B. Stewart goes there is absolutely no reason DCE, Foran and Stewart shouldn't stay (unless Glenn will follow Brett no matter where he goes kind of situation). With Stewarts big money off the books, and one or two releases at the end of the season then there is plenty to go around.

If Manly lose 2/4 it would be unfortunate but possibly unavoidable. If they were to lose any more than 2 it would be once again shambolic management, maybe worse than the Des bungle.

Someone posted a rumour in the Saints forum that there would be a major announcement on Friday.

Wouldn't read anything into it though, 'Friday announcement' is a running joke on the forum, due to someone in 2009 alledging that there was going to be a friday press conference announcing Lockyer was signing with us.
