So have all the leagies playing union signed just the base contract, with match payments if they are to play for the wallabies?

Could see the situation where grothe is only recieving the base salary of 280,000 if he doesn't perform. Might have been a safer option with all his injury worries to get the guaranteed 300 from parra (if thats what they think his worth of course).

Would be interesting to see if shifcoske, cross, tate (if he signs), tahu and grothe werent in the wallabies squad would they be content to sit in there super 14 teams festering on base contracts. Maybe they know the wallabies is as close to a sure thing as possible.

The title of this thread sucks. The headline in the Canberra Times today "Eels face Grothe defect" was much snappier.

No deal: Grothe not wanted

The Australian Rugby Union has denied reports it is looking to sign Australian representative rugby league winger Eric Grothe, issuing a statement today saying they will not be making an offer.

ARU operations manager Pat Wilson said a report in the Daily Telegraph that Eric Grothe Jnr is about to sign a deal worth $280,000 per season from the ARU is totally incorrect.

"Eric is one of a number of high profile athletes the ARU is regularly approached to meet.

"An informal meeting was held with Eric, and that is as far as things have progressed", he said.

"No offer, formal or informal has been discussed or tabled.

"The ARU spends millions in developing young talent through our own rugby programs, but occasionally someone is brought to our attention in a position where we think we might be able to develop extra depth and we agree to listen.

"The ARU always deals with these matters on a case by case basis.

"If Eric wishes to try to secure a playing contract with one of the Super 14 franchises, his management knows the doors are wide open to them, however the ARU will not be topping up any Super 14 franchise's offer.

The signing of Parramatta Eels centre Timana Tahu this week stoked speculation that teammate Grothe was next on the list.

this is bullsh*t
they have just spent many millions of dollars buying/retaining old(ish) league wingers
and then a few days later get a headline claiming theyre investing in the growth of their game

this headline is the worst:

ARU investing in growth, not Grothe
http://www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au/n...owth-not-grothe/2007/03/22/1174153256485.html

Claims from the ARU that they're more interested in spending money on their own sport is blatantly obvious lies. I know the SMH is the rugby paper but that headline, just days after the tahu and tuqiri sagas, is just incredible.
