I wouldn't put too much credence into what coaches say about their assistants. When have you ever heard one say "he is not ready", "he is not up to being a head coach", "he's crap"? Only hear glowing references or the person themselves saying they are happy where they are learning their trade.

You don’t think getting experience on how other successful systems (non-dragons) operate is beneficial?
Yeah it is. But what does that tell you about the club? It shows that getting experience at the club isn’t as good as getting the experience elsewhere…it shows that we suck

Do you think having Michael Chieka you would have a guy who can pick up the best Rugby talent and transition them to league players at the NRL paying low dollars. He would know the where to get these players and tap into that market for Saints. Maybe somthing to consider.

I really hope that Saints go an experienced coach in Hasler/Flanno with Ryles/Young/Hornby. Browny as recruitment. That would be the best for me. I will even go further and say Flanno/Hasler with Barrett as assistant because he as coached under Cleary and may offer something else. Ryles and Baz have had the better tutalige of the ex-dragons coached. I know Hornby has been with Bennett but so has Hook & Price and how did that work out? I would even go Chieka as the assistant if he may be keen to take over within 2 years.

Last time Saints appointed an ex-Dragon premiership winner it was Craig Young in the 1989-90. Worst years for the Dragons winning 18 losing 26 with a 41% win rate. Similar to what they have had with the last 3 coaches. Maybe that is an omen not to go Hornby.

So we had him as an assistant coach…f**ked him off…now want him back as head coach? f**k me we are dumb
I think that is a bit strong. At the time it was reported as him leaving (rather than us rejecting him) in order to get experience in another system.

All in order to make him a better coach long term. Which I applaud.

IMO he needs to be head coach of a NSW Cup and or Super League club now.

You have to start acting like an ambitious, destination club if you want to become one
I see what you mean, but you can't just attract a coach off the bat like that. Acting like an ambitious club starts with how the club is run and administered that makes a coach want to come there

I am talking myself into Hasler provided he is willing to mentor someone to take over like Hornby (if he is willing to come as an assistant) in a couple of years but im not sure that is Des's go. We really need a hard head to get our once great club back on track. Flanagan's upside is he rebuilt the gummies with the right players which is what we need but he has a lot of baggage. It would be a tough ask for Ryles (or Hornby) to turn our club around in his first gig as head coach. Whatever the club does it has to be done in quick time we are really floundering at the moment.

I'd like to see an interim like Hannay in now. Many other choices out there too.

Just think it'd be interesting to see what someone else can do with the same squad. Probably not a whole lot better but what's to lose? Keep Griffin on to run water or let him give up his position. Hunt can do what he wants. He may be a great player but he will never be bigger than the club.

why are people saying Des needs to mentor someone? hes not that old.
Um Hasler is 62 and retirement age is 65.

He has almost 20 years coaching experience. If he is appointed to any role at Dragons it would be crazy to not make mentoring and developing younger and less experienced staff part of his role description. A critical role for leaders in any organisation is to grow capability beneath them and weed out the duds.

67 actually. Gives him 5 years. But there's a few other masters of the art that have gone well beyond the statutory retirement age.

I’m reading what you guys are suggesting.
has anybody actually thought of something constructive to say which will benefit the dragons and direct them to win a comp.

No wonder is run by parasites.
Transport me back to the late 70’s
I want to have a chat with Harry Bath , Changa and the rest - people who had the clubs best interests in mind.
