Ben Hornby could be the one going down the straight and winning by a nose!! Jason Demetriou has given him high praise if you are able to check the Daily Telegraph article of about 3 hours ago via the Paywall access.

BEN HORNBY A LEADING CONTENDER TO REPLACE ANTHONY GRIFFIN

St George Illawarra are edging closer to cutting coach Anthony Griffin and the board are set to decide who replaces him with a short-list of options to be presented this week.

Ben Hornby has been anointed as the man to save St George Illawarra as the embattled club edges closer to a call on besieged head coach Anthony Griffin.

Ahead of the Dragons’ crucial clash with the Raiders Sunday and an even more critical board meeting on Tuesday, Hornby has received the ultimate endorsement by his current boss, South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou.

Hornby, who formerly worked under Wayne Bennett as an assistant coach at South Sydney and now under Demetriou, is one of several coaching options set to be put to the Dragons board within the next 48 to 72-hours.

Senior management have been tasked with presenting a short-list of head coach candidates to the board on Tuesday after the club informed Griffin he wasn’t guaranteed to continue in the role beyond this season.

A short-list of potential coaching options will also be given but barring a catastrophic performance against the Raiders on Sunday there is no immediate push to make a call on Griffin.

The names of Manly Sea Eagles assistant coach Shane Flanagan, Cowboys assistant coach Dean Young, Roosters assistant coach Jason Ryles, Sharks assistant coach Josh Hannay, Raiders assistant coach Michael Maguire, former Manly premiership-winning coach Des Hasler, Rabbitohs assistant coach John Morris, Hornby and Griffin will all be presented to the board.

Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater won‘t be put forward after he declined an offer to be included among the short-list.

The board will also discuss the option of pairing a senior coach, like Flanagan or Hasler, with a rookie who can take over within the next two seasons, like Young, Hornby or Ryles.

As revealed by The Saturday Telegraph yesterday, the possible return of former head coach Nathan Brown in a head of recruitment, general manager of football or assistant coach role, will also be discussed by the board.

Brown has strong support by senior members of the Dragons board and has a close relationship with Ryles, Hornby and Young.

Red and white to the core, Hornby captained the Dragons to the 2010 premiership and has played the most games (273) for St George-Illawarra on record.

After retiring in 2012, Hornby developed his coaching craft through the Dragons lower grades and worked as an assistant to Paul McGregor before moving to Souths to work under Bennett in 2018 before continuing on with Demetriou.

The Rabbitohs coach offered a stunning character reference for Hornby.

“Ben Hornby has done his time (as an assistant),” Demetriou said.

“I think he’s worked under some great coaches as I had done.

“I think he’ll be a first-class choice for the Dragons. He’s somebody who has been there and done that at many levels of the game.

“He’s ready to step into that (head coach) role. I trust him and I know the players would trust him.

“He’s got a great ability to adapt and to understand what his team needs and when they need it.

“He’s got an ability to put the foot down when he has too, but also to pull back and let the players have some input when they need to.

“I see a lot of great traits in him. I’m not sure what’s going on at the Dragons, but if he is in the mix, they’re going down the right path in talking to him.’’

It is understood Hornby – who will be asked to be interviewed by management before any decision is made – is keen to return to the club if the head coaching position becomes available.

So too will Flanagan, who is believed to have the powerful support of the WIN Corporation side of the joint-venture.

The 2016 premiership-winning coach of Cronulla has key intel into how the Dragons operate having spent the past several seasons both as an assistant coach and head of recruitment before shifting to Manly.

His relationship with Young, who share a bond through their similar hard-nosed character traits, could lead to the board following an increasing trend within the game of appointing a senior coach to help guide the eventual entry into the NRL of a rookie, like Young.

Hannay is an interesting candidate. The 43-year-old has an increasing reputation within the game, both for his work at the Sharks, but also as an assistant to Slater at Queensland State of Origin level.

He was interviewed by Manly management to replace Hasler before they went with Anthony Seibold. However, it remains to be seen if Hannay would be willing to interview for the Dragons job.

So a week or so back we were lead to believe the Dragons locals of Ryles, Young and Hornby were being over looked for an experienced NRL coach.
Now Hornby appears to be one of the favourites for the job, with Nathan Brown favoured to rejoin the club in a senior football role somewhere.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I really think, and hope the next head coach at the Dragons will become clearer after Tuesday's board meeting.

Hornby is still leaning his trade and needs to now get a job as Head coach in the ESL before being qualified as a contender in the NRL.

Hasler is far and away a better coach than Hornby and should be the club pick for Head Coach.

What I can’t understand is the hype around Dean Young and Ben Hornby. Legends of the club for sure. Gone away from the club and have had decent success. Yet if there were other coaching jobs open would Hornby or Young even be considered? I can’t see them really being an option to coach any other team in the Nrl. It’s just that they have Dragons DNA that’s putting them in the hunt. They may go onto have incredibly successful coaching careers but it just seems like all the other options are either ex premiership winners or young coaches that would have a shot at any other vacancy.

Brown can scout talent it's his biggest attribute for sure am in all favour of that. I like the idea of having Des or Flanno as head coach (though I've heard the board doesn't want Des) & having a good assistant to take the reigns further down the track Hannay or Morris would be my first choices for the understudy Hornby I can live with but if Dean is anything like his old man (which I believe he is) I don't want him anywhere near the joint, club legend, damn good player but as a coach I'm not interested one bit.

Love both Hornby and Young , dead set Club Legends that gave their all for the Big Red V.
BUT my biggest concern with both is .... can they attract Quality players to the Club , without paying complete Overs ??
If they can ..Great
Im sure Hasler can , and to a lessor extent Flanagan
Like some on here , would be happy to see Hasler Coach for two years , than pass on to Hornby . with Hasler moving to a Directorship Role
Can't see Hunt staying if Hook is punted .Could heal the supposed divide if he goes
Smart move to bring Brown back .Things starting to take shape...if you believe what is happening behind the scenes

I think of the available options my favourite would be Ryles. I doubt he would come on under a more experienced coach for a few years before taking over though. I think he believes he is ready for a top job now.

I Was pretty against the idea of Hasler originally, but with more thought I’m liking the idea of him coming on with a progression plan for a younger guy. That is, if we can’t get Ryles. Feel like he’d want more than 2 years though. He’s not going get the team back on track and then just hand it over to someone else. I think he would want 3 years at least. Maybe he gets 3 years and if we are performing he can get renewed and the young assistant (Hornby, Hannay, Morris, Young) under him is promised the job as soon as Des is done? Might be hard for one of those guys to wait potentially 5 years before they took over though.

Don’t think Flanagan would agree just to hand over the reigns either. Seems like he wants to get back into the coaching game for the long haul.

Hornby led us to a premiership in 2010. I think that for now I’d prefer that to be my memory of him instead of the poor rookie coach taking over trying to fix 12 years of crap. I’d hate to see this club legend torn to shreds if it didn’t go well, he deserves better. Maybe Des in to right the ship with Benny taking over after a couple of years. I just dont think we can afford a rookie after 12 years of failure. Des or Flanno then making way for Hornby after a couple of years I could get behind.

I have held off on this debate but as I've stated on several occasions I think Young jnr needs more experience before he gets the Red V job and I hope that the powers that be who are making the decision take note of the way the Cows are travelling this year with him as AC. I think Des as HC with Ben horny is what we need. A proven no nonsense premiership winner as player and coach plus a premiership captain continuing his apprenticeship as AC

To me it is getting harder and harder to decide on a replacement for Hook. The next coach has definitely got to have much better KPI's than Hook; has definitely got to be a coach who knows how to get a team to win close games, has definitely got to have players with the right attitude and culture and that coach needs to want success for the Dragons and then be modest about his own success.

The NRL is a tough competition and this year it appears to be even tougher that last year. It doesn't take much for a good team to lose in the end while by good fortune a lower team has the luck to win.

Penrith are finding winning games harder, the Roosters the same and also the Storm. The Broncos are doing much better than expected and good luck to them. They have worked out what players they needed to get and the players to be re-signed. They are the team to beat this year. Young players with a couple of older guys to steady the ship. Kevin Walters and his men have done a good job.

For us, we need better players and that would help the new coach a real lot.
