So who is the old geezer who was oz TV commentator for the Broncs v Gold Coast game last night?
He was having a shocker.
At one point he was moaning about forward passes calls/no calls by the refs (and each ref decision was right in my view). He gave this memorable bit of commentary (and repeated it 3 or 4 times):
"The ball can travel forwards as long as it goes backwards"
I mean what planet is that dude on...one where laws of physics don't apply?
To compound his idiocy on a non forward pass call, he demanded a video ref replay, saying (sic) "they can't rule on a forward pass but that was a 'tap-on' and they can rule on a tap-on, its not a pass." Is their such a distinction? Its just a type of pass - spiral, tap on, flick, lob, etc. I suspect he is a muppet.
I don't why there is so much difficulty with forward passes in RL, its pretty simple. Don't trust the camera angle unless directly lined up, otherwise use reference points on the field (lines real or imposed on the grass).
A video ref could easily accurately review forward passes with some pretty simple technology that on the TV view, superimposed more lines on the field, parallel to and based on the actual painted lines.
Almost as annoying as torso trys.
