Awesome effort by the Kumuls, from the look of that photo there is a fair size difference between the teams, the 'Aussie' team were no mugs that's for sure. Hopefully the nrl can pick up a few players from png because of this.

Something I thought of today, has anybody checked whether all of the players in the Aussie team were even eligible? I'm assuming roger tuivasa shecks brother didn't come over before him, and this is the third year rts has been in Australia so even he isn't eligible for Australia. I highly doubt his brother is. It just reeks of arrogance that Australia sent the roosters sg ball team regardless of nationality!

You would think that there are rules to represent a country at the commonwealth games though!

A lot of the Australian boys are Kiwis. Heres the excuse they came up with;

“The boys from New Zealand are eligible for Australia Under-19s through first representation and residence,” said Australia manager Holmes, who arrived with his team in Glasgowe yesterday.

On the subject, why didnt the National Champion Townsville Stingers represent instead? At least they were fully made up of eligible Australian players.

I believe a number of the Singers players were to rep for Qld 18's @ Origin Two so the timing was wrong. Bit unfair that one club is gifted national jerseys. Should have rewarded kids from around the country.

So we basically just ignored all previous international laws regarding eligibility and made them up on the spot. Ridiculous! Some of the roosters players still live in nz now that the sg ball season is over.

I'm surprised how worked up people are getting about the eligibility for this tournament. The U/19's teams were picked under the same rules most school boys and other aged representative teams are picked, which is based upon residency.

The only non-open age teams picked under the standard international rules are the Junior Kangaroos and Junior Kiwis and that was to add a level of balance to the match considering the large number of Kiwis that end up over in Australia.

All other Junior teams in RL generally are picked based upon residency.

Yes, but a Comm Games should be treated correctly, even for a demonstration sport.

no...its better if you don't win everything lol

Seriously mate your right though

For me comps like this are good for development of smaller nations, like SA and Canada and reward to larger nations (such as the young roosters team and Englands selection for the comp)

Whereas if Eng/NZ and Aus pick the best players available to them they will undoubtedly take the top three places

The Scotland team had a fair few players not living in Scotland, England born and bred but Scottish heritage. Canada had an Australian based player, I'm sure the Jamaican team had a couple of English players, the Australian team even had a roosters sg ball player who has returned to nz to play for his club. So I don't buy that the teams are based on residency. Australia just made up their own rules by the look of it, I'm glad they didn't win.

Were there any rules set out by the organizers?
I hardly think we can throw stones if there was just a presumed standard of eligibility.

SG Ball runs for over 3 months, over an entire term of school for most involved.
I think living in a country for at least 3 months (this dosen't include the trialing period before the tournament which I presume they'd have to be in the country for as well) can be considered residency.
And just because one player left the country after the tournament dosen't mean that before the tournament he wasn't an Australian resident.

Why all the sooking about Australia? Even when we dont win you poms have a sook.
It was a demonstration tournament, not the actual Commonwealth Games.

The point is that this whole thing with the Commonwealth recognition etc is supposed to be an attempt to actually look like a legit, organized international sport for once, and then Australia send over a team full of Kiwis. It's not really a big issue right now, but it's just symbolic of the disorganization and lack of understanding/interest that Australia tends to have regarding international RL and international sport in general. Bush league shit like this is why we have never really progressed as an international sport and attitudes need to change.

I'm Aussie, not a pom. I'm whinging because Australia sent a team of 15 players and 6 players weren't australian and are not eligible for australia. Probably not a big deal to a lot of people and didnt effect the success of the tournament, but to me reeks of arrogance. Then to have someone from our camp say they qualify because they have lived here is just taking the p*ss. Anyway, moving on from it now, just wanted to point out the fact that we sent a team that made up its own rules and no other country did this.
