Complaint of racial abuse in Roosters v Broncos

.

The media slant on this racial slur and the Sam Kerr racial slur are completely polar opposite.

.
I’ll be watching with interest the Brit take on whether “You’re a stupid white bastard” qualifies as racial vilification. I have been told that it’s impossible to be racist towards a white person (what rubbish!) so I’ll be keen to see where this goes.
As an ethnicly ambiguous person I’ve copped it from all sides. Whether being called a convict, a Mediterranean Descendant and a (insert slur term for Aboriginal). It just confused me most of the time! I only really reacted when they made similar comments towards my Mum. Then I wanted to rip their heads off. Funny how that works.

Very well handled by the Roosters and the Spencer I think.

This will take a lot of heat out of the issue. Whilst I understand it was probably written for him, I think his statement was very good also (except for the "I didn't mean it bit")

Agree. Still reckon it’s worth 10 weeks. Probably get 4-6

Discount for early guilty plea is usual. My guess is 3 weeks plus sensitivity training.

2-3 weeks and sensitivity training/volunteering for an Indigenous organisation seems to be the best option. I don't agree that he should get 6-10 weeks when violent head highs or shoulder charges get less.

It'd be interesting to know what happened behind closed doors with any other Roosters players on the field who were within ear shot of Spencer.

For a bloke playing his first competitive game I wonder if they were willing to back him up with their own integrity on the line.

He has a long way to mature as a professional. Ivan would yank him the moment the ruck was going against Penrith. Even after four seasons of first grade there didn't seem to be alot of trust in him.

The key to understanding issues like this and the "I didn't mean it" part, is that it is not whether the person saying it meant it or not. It is how it is received by the person it is said to that creates the problem. From an ethical, and a legal perspective, that is how matters like this are treated.

I've been through this kind of training at work (which is mandatory for all my workplace's staff) and that point is made abundantly clear. Its one thing some people do not realise but the way the laws are written on this, it is very crystal clear.

People who look at me just see a middle aged, blue eyed, blonde headed (though going grey) white male. What most don't know is go back 3 generations in my family, and one of my paternal Grandfather's parents was from the West Indies (I do not know precisely which country). Add in having cousins of indigenous Australian heritage, I have a lot of empathy for what they go through in relation to stuff like this.

Shows a bit of guts to own up to it. Pretty obvious where it was headed if he didn't, but still the right thing to do.

seems like a length suspension on its way according to the ABC (in before the editor finds it)

"We respect the judiciary process. Accordingly, the club will not be making any further comment prior to the hearing."

Leniu will face the judiciary on Tuesday night and is expected to be hit with a103539588 lengthy suspension.

The club statement direct from the club website, unfiltered: https://www.roosters.com.au/news/2024/03/07/club-statement-spencer-leniu/

The Sydney Roosters have today entered a guilty plea to the contrary conduct charge against Spencer Leniu.

Inclusivity of people from all cultures and backgrounds is a key and valued principle of the Sydney Roosters. The Roosters do not tolerate any form of racism and we extend our heartfelt apologies to Ezra, his family and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

“I want to apologise to Ezra and his family for using the word I did and I am sincerely sorry to cause him such distress,” said Roosters player Spencer Leniu.

“I’ve put my hand up and want to take ownership of this. I said the word but I didn’t mean it in a racist way. Anyone who knows me knows that’s not who I am,” he added.

“Spencer has been completely open and honest throughout this process, and we will continue to support him,” said Roosters CEO Joe Kelly.

“We extend our deepest apologies to Ezra, his family and the wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and offer our support to all parties during this time.

“We respect the Judiciary process. Accordingly, the Club will not be making any further comment prior to the hearing,” he added.

I’m not too fussed at what punishment he gets (4, 6, 12 weeks) I just hope the judiciary can ignore all the outside noise and come up with a fair and just punishment - not what Latrell thinks is fair. Purely out of interest, I’d like a journo to ask Latrell if he thinks it’s worse than his shot on Manu which ended his season resulting in just a 6 week suspension for him despite priors.
