One of the papers today is reporting players openly discussed Barrett as the new coach in 2014 in the dressing room following the Eels game.

I don't believe it.
Why take so long to make it news?
Papers take every opportunity to break the latest news on clubs yet they wait 3 days.

Interesting take by Phil Gould in his Fairfax column. Text below is only about one third of his piece, but most relevant to what is being said by most of the posters here who know what they are talking about.

Isn't this the most relevant piece in the article from Gould -

I have no idea if Mick Potter is a good coach

Yet Barrett is deemed a capable replacement despite never being a head coach in ESL or NRL

Its very relevant, none of us here....nor someone thats been involved in the game for more than 40 years at the highest level can make this call.....until potter has been given a fair crack.

The board seem to want 'top level coach' results.....yet hire a rookie on a hiding to nothing.

Hire an experienced pro if you want experienced pro results

Yet I read posts from supporters so willing to make derogatory comments about some of our senior players including Farah. And other so willing to believe them based on no evidence whatsoever.

Some supporters even make up stuff themselves. Seriously they just make it up.

Benji and Robbie have been having an affair with Sheens and Potter stopped them having a threesome one night and that is why they don't like him.

I'd go a step further. I'm not sure that any experienced pro would get better results. Sheens is an experienced pro and as Gould states the team might be going just as poorly if Sheens was still coaching us.

Potter deserves more time and there is no evidence that any coach would have done a better job.

The state sheens left us in was similar to the state Iraq left Kuwait in when they left in 1991. The scorched earth policy was in full flow. No halfback, no heart, no accountability, past it f**kwits like Analsta etc etc etc

I'm not going to crucify Sheens even though I can't stand him. I think we were a good team who made some crucially poor recruitment and retention decisions and some players have just lost their ability to play at a high level.

The point is though Potter has been dumped in the crap and he shouldn't be crucified for the team performing like a bunch of drop kicks.

I agree with Tiger05 on this one. I didn't think that Sheens should have been in charge as long as he was, but you can't blame the bloke for trying to protect his job. Realistically he should have been let go in at the end of 2007 for failing to build in the success of winning the comp in 2005, but with our crap board he was allowed to do as he pleased for another 5 years. It's the same reason I don't hold any rancour towards Humphreys. He walks into a job where the last CEO got punted for trying to make the coach accountable and just when it comes to contract renewal time for the coach, the club manages to make the finals and the Panthers drive his price up.

Anyone with a brain can see the best option is to stick with Potter and at least let him see out his contract.

It's not like you guys have seen no success since 2005. In 2010 you guys came extremely close to winning a premiership. If not for a Tuqiri brain snap yous should have beat the dragons and had a great chance of winning the whole thing. In 2011 you made the top 4 won a match against the dragons and lost to the warriors by 2 in the semis (who went on to make the GF).

Tim sheens is also still the last coach to actually win a premiership outside of the Bennett, Bellamy, Hasler combo.

You guys held on to him for too long but it wasn't totally unwarranted and Sheens lack of success is sometimes over stated. I know he left your club in a terrible state but he did deliver yous a premiership and wasn't far off getting another which is more than can be said for pretty much any other coach in the league.

More on topic i think the tigers would be crazy to fire Potter. I don't think he could have done anything to prevent this season being a failure. He has managed to trim the fat and deserves at least 1 more year to try and turn things around.

It all went wrong end of 2011.
Lui bashed his wife and the was the start of the rot.
Moltzen was retained to fill Luis vacant spot at halfback, which failed.
Then Sheens starting giving everyone a go at half and it was a free for all.

He might have been safe if he just went and bought a half when Lui was sacked.
We still haven't got one. Lol.

We lost Prince. Tuiaki, Dwyer and Lui. Now many supporters will condemn Sheens for any number of things but to lose players of this standard will damage your chances. I don't believe these losses have been given sufficient recognition. Except for Prince who was attracted to the club by Sheens, the remainder were part of the WTs' junior development also implemented by Sheens.

Also Simona, Brooks, Moses, Sue, Luani, Rowe, Tedesco, Buchanan, Lovett, Brown, Cherrington, Armstrong, Tatola and more.

All part of the junior development system or recruited under Sheens. A pity we don't have a coach to continue on the good work. Instead we have Keith Lulia coming!

Plenty of talent but an abundance in some positions which should have been complimented by intelligent recruitment where we were lacking and retention where we were strong - no halfback since Scott Prince left is unforgivable, as is not being able to see the talent of Fifita, the form prop of the NSW State of Origin team. Had to be held accountable, and lasted longer than he should have.

You make some very good paoints. We should have signed a halfback but didn't. Losing Prince was a huge loss not only for the club but also Marshall.

I find it amusing how a relative inexperienced coach can get the best out of Fifita whereas it was beyond the Australian coach.
Sheens even said that releasing Fifita may come back and bite West Tigers. Shame he did not own up and say it was his call but then it is always someone elses fault.
We have to move on as there is life after death and the future is in the hands of the younger generation.

Sheens helped bring on some great talen but gee we let some good talent go too.
Not all of them were Sheens fault but let's have a look at some of the guys we lost under him.
Hodgo, Phatts, Payten, Ellis, Laffranchi, Prince, Richards, Lima, Galea, Gibbs, Harrison etc etc. Not all those players are great but gee I'd love to have some of those blokes back now.

How much credit can you give to Sheens?

Did he convince a bunch of 16 year olds to play for the Tigers?

He can only be credited with getting them into FG and performing well once there.
