The short ball to the decoy/option runner is the entire raison d'etre for the first receiver in those shift plays. That's why you can't stick just anyone at first receiver. The pass to the deep runner is the easy bit, the short ball to the decoy is the difficult bit, and the threat of that pass is what is supposed to keep the outside defenders honest.
Obviously if the pass is never thrown it stops being a threat. With the linebreaks to Moeroa and Smith on the weekend, the Titans will watch the video and hopefully give the backs more space. And if they don't our playmakers will keep hitting the short runner. In theory.
I agree. It was a good change up against the Rabbits. Having blokes like Moeroa that are willing to run those lines and take those passes late is also a key aspect to the play. Hopefully it gives the Titans something to think about.
