Banning handshakes in a sport where sweaty blokes dry hump each other for 80 mins will definitely stop the spread.
Has the issue of players spitting on the ground been addressed, and would it make any difference?

It will be very hard to police during the game being that it always has been the habit of most footballers, but they'll have to disinfect the ground after each game like I've seen in Rugby Union.

Maybe Timnah can get in contact with the NRL to address this issue.

I'm visiting the season opener of Parra V Bulldogs. I am not convinced that I'll be visiting another home game this season, despite having a season ticket. Virus spread will rise in Sydney, I suspect Sydney will be the worst of anywhere in Australia.

Here is the issue

If lots of people are gonna get the coronavirus we want to flatten out the curve of people with it all at once. What's killing people in Italy is the overload of the health system

Sensible measures like perhaps restricting large gatherings for a couple of weeks might work at slowing the speed of infection. That's primarily the biggest worry. There are horror stories coming out of Italy (excellent healthcare system) of folks dying in hospital hallways waiting for instruments because the system can't deal with the demand.

If you don't want doctors having to make the tough call on if grandma gets access to the required healthcare we should think about limiting gatherings. They are doing this in Japan to try and keep the Olympics and it appears to be flattening out the curve there

I’d rather be at the footy then in the filth that is a Sydney train. Can’t ban one and not the other...for that reason I can’t see it happening

Hard thing in Italy is they have a few cultural aspects that would have contributed to the speed of the spread. They participate in regular large family gathering and eating out happened a lot in cafes etc. Plus they often greet each other with kisses and hugs and it is easy to see how this took off the way it did in Italy.

You are exactly right though that slowing the speed of the spread of the infection is crucial and so far we seem to be doing a good job of this. The information is that the peak of this infection could be as little as 8 weeks and as much as 18 in Australia. The more we can extend this towards the longer limits with less people impacted at once the better we will be able to manage it. Interestingly enough hospitals have already started limiting amounts of staff in meetings to try and limit the risk of exposure to staff, because keeping our health care workers healthy and working is also critical in working through this problem.

I have a suspicion that in the USA Trump may be trying to shorten the length of the peak to try and get economic recovery quicker after the crisis has passed.

Two members of the Haas Formula One team and one from McLaren are in quarantine as a precaution amid coronavirus fears ahead of Sunday's season-opening race in Melbourne.

Key points:
  • Renault pulled both Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon from the team's livery unveiling due to concerns about coronavirus
  • Team members from McLaren and Haas are awaiting results of tests for coronavirus
  • Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said at this stage the F1 season-opener will go ahead as planned

"Two members of the team have been quarantined and remain in their hotel room. They displayed symptoms of a cold," a spokesperson for Haas told Reuters.

McLaren said one team member had self-isolated in the hotel as a precaution.

"We expect to receive the results overnight. The team is operating as per our normal schedule," McLaren said.

The NBL grand final series won’t be impacted by the coronavirus despite Perth Wildcats players and coaches being on the same plane as a confirmed carrier. The Wildcats flew back from Sydney on QF581 on Monday but weren’t seated near the infected person.
The team trained this morning and have no concerns about being on the plane. https://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/p...e-plane-as-coronavirus-carrier-ng-b881486943z
