News Coronavirus and NRL

This is why the NRL should be addressing their fanbase and asking them to partner in pressuring the broadcasters to support the game.

If Vlandys and Toddy got out there today and spoke to the fans, asking us to collecting bargain with foxtel to keep us on as customers in exchange for honouring their full payment to the NRL, I'm sure it would make huge waves. The NRL fanbase would love nothing more than to take another massive swipe at news corp
yeh that would go down well with the codes major funder, nrl getting it’s fans to hold fox to ransom lol.

Isn't that the outcome regardless? Hardly any need to threaten this. I'm not retaining my Kayo subscription if there is no NRL, I didn't for summer and wouldn't now.

Hundreds of thousands would be in the same position, essentially without the NRL, Fox is ruined in Australia.

that’s very different from the nrl coming out and advocating for fans to threaten it!

highlights the point that in rugby league, broadcasters and sponsors aren't partners with the NRL - they're purely mercenaries using rugby league for content.

how can the NBA and Premier League and all other OS leagues suspend but NRL feels it's over a barrel with it's arse hanging in the breeze if it does?

Government have closed schools etc over there. No choice in those situations

Agreed. Kayo is pointless with no sport

The alternative is Foxtel reneging on their deal and multiple clubs and potentially the code going to the wall.

so I’m not sure what the risk would be on the NRL’s part

I don't see that happening.

I have seen multiple people on roosters fb page demanding compensation for a $150 membership because of the lock out.

I see absolutely no one keeping foxtel just because the NRL asks them to.

Long terms I would tighten the belts in terms of coaching staff. Each team to have 1 coach. The rest are 100% unnecessary. It should not be as expensive to run as it currently is.

Honestly if the fans abandon foxtel en masse it may have the same effect anyway i.e. forcing Foxtel to realise that their survival is dependent on keeping the NRL around.

So it might still force their hand to maintain their full contract with the NRL and not try to screw them out of any money.

The NRL could then at least be seen to be trying to support their partner by asking fans to maintain their service for the year

Of course it’s the reality But talking about it in a panicky way on the Sunday morning sports shows is not going to achieve anything.

Strongly disagree.

If you're worried about public perception - then check social media. What he said seems to have garnered very strong support amongst the community. People on Facebook across various pages are actually supporting the decision to play on, and are also quoting the financial implications if the season gets cancelled.

Won't achieve anything? Vlandys has achieved exactly step number one - public support to continue in the meantime.

Roosters fans asking for money back from a $150 membership are out of touch with reality and should pull their f**king heads in. Once the dust settles on this bullishit I am sure the chooks will repay them with a free game or some sort of football related compo.

The selfishness of the general population and their behaviour throughout all this saga is so f**king disappointing but deep down I’m honestly not surprised.

I am a member too.

best course is to wait and see. No one knows how many games will miss or how the clubs end up financially.

Won’t be too hard to offer a discount to those renewing next year

It is certainly not exclusive to roosters fans

I've noticed a couple facebook events along the lines of "storm the mcg round 1 - they can't stop us all" popping up for the AFL, wonder if anyone will actually try and the security risks that will entail
