I doubt it. I think the Italians a month ago would have been like how we were a month ago.

This article from a Florence based journalist from the 11th says Italians over the previous two weeks were having house parties and flaunting social isolation measures

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/10/coronavirus-lockdown-italy-florence-panic

Here an Italian journalist says that the early response from Italians was that it was "only" a flu, and "only" old people should worry (sound familiar?), but now it is a disaster

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politic...turned-beloved-home-wasteland-hope-uk-learns/

This journalist writes that two weeks before the first "red zones" in Italy, everyone was keen on spreading the message that Italy was still open for business. The economic downturn was the greatest fear

https://www.cntraveler.com/story/what-its-like-to-be-in-italy-during-the-coronavirus-lockdown

Here a student in Italy talks about her life in the first few weeks after the first few cases were confirmed in Italy. She says she expected more response, more panic, more masks, but life went on pretty much as normal for a few weeks.

https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/turin-italy-coronavirus-lockdown-europe-march-1-6557828

Here is an interesting counterpoint. This author says the reaction in Italy was too panicked, and caused stockpiling and looting for no reason. The author blames fake news and social media for fear mongering. The author says there are "only" 3858 infected and 148 dead. Here the writer is still playing it down.

https://www.shoutoutuk.org/2020/03/09/italy-battles-coronavirus-and-misinformation/

Of course, a week later and the deaths have jumped past 1000, with more than the "only" 148 deaths now happening each day.

Work is a lot more essential to the individual as well though. If we shut down businesses now a lot won't be there once we get to the other side of this!

They don’t have to shut down businesses. Just mandate working from home where possible. That will greatly reduce the numbers on public transport and make it much safer for those who have to use it.

It’s win/win for everyone. Can’t understand why this hasn’t happened yet.

Don’t be blind. We will all be in our bunkers not working for at least the next year and a half, NRL hopefully being back in by June next year. We will get food from airdrops and obviously won’t have to pay electricity or water or gas as essential workers will work for free for 15 months. It’s nuclear winter get used to it.

Sadly, unlike global warming, where denialists might take decades to admit they were wrong, you will probably be eating your words in two weeks. But I hope your sarcasm and optimism are right, and I can happily tell you how wrong I was in two weeks.

I just don't see what makes Australia any different from the countries that have had to "lockdown"/"social distance" this last week as their fatalities increase geometrically.

I meant the flag and signs only... no fans allowed in. Fans could register their gear with the club before the game to be placed on the hill/seats etc. or let them in before the game to do so themselves..

although if it’s feasible I think another idea would be to draw out appropriate number of members (ie number of 500 less teams staff etc) from the home team to come and be allowed to watch..
The GST sign should be there at every game along with FAIL MARY.

The Warriors should come home NOW.

Not after round 2, not when the competition is inevitably suspended after a player gets Covid-19, NOW.

If the NRL needs a 16th team & an 8th game per weekend to fulfill broadcast contracts then either promote a Qld cup team in the Warriors place, or scout out a composite team from the 2nd tier.

Hell, it might even be a back-door way towards expansion to 17 teams once the Warriors are back next year.
Bring back the Bears

And I will be when the authorities tell me to, not some guy on the internet who may not know what he is talking about! The government has followed the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, what else are they supposed to do?

Well they told you to today.

Which part of what I am saying is incompatible with what the government is saying?

Don't listen to me, I wouldn't if I was you. Look at what others are saying around the world. Listen to what the AMA is saying. And yes, listen to the government. Don't take what anyone says, including the government, as gospel, but be informed by all of it.

Plenty of businesses are taking it into their own hands.

Because the Chief Medical Officer hasn't recommended it, I guess you can't understand why they are following the advice of the Chief Medical Officer over some nobody on the internet?

Where have I argued to not follow the government advice? I'm not arguing for closing of schools. I am saying that is obviously not the requirement yet as it wasn't advised by the Chief Medical Officer!

It could be possible for the Warriors to withdraw from the NRL...

Maybe.

I think it will end up being an all or nothing deal, when we get some players with coronavirus or the Warriors realise they are needed with their families. Then the season will be postponed.

Every prediction is just guesswork, mine no more or less than others, things have changed so rapidly it is too hard to be too sure about the future.

But if I had to make a wild guess, I'd say the NRL will hold the fort as long as possible at each line, before giving up suddenly. They go from "Go to the footy" to "No crowds". From "Warriors to play in Aus" and "Players to keep playing" to "we will pause until later". From "We will be back in a month" to "We will be back in a few months".

I guess a truncated season is possible after our strict social distancing measures are relaxed, whenever that will be (after whenever they come in). But my wildest guess for this year is that the season gets postponed enough that they just say in the end, we'll try again next year.

I guess if that does happen there will be a lot of financial damage along the way.

Could be.

But... it would be very disappointing if that club did not do everything they could to play their part in keeping the comp running.

Granted family is of the upmost importance to us all, but it does sound as though all options are being explored / looked at, including bringing family to Aus. I understand the restrictions and requirements on travel now imposed by both Aus and NZ and the difficulty with that.

Yes, this is unprecedented but the Warriors need to show some backbone and do whatever it takes to stay here and conpete in this comp as long as the NRL can operate.

The players fought for and won the right to be 'partners in the game' and the game needs them right now - and for as long as is possible.

That includes buying in to any contingency plan that sees them continue playing AND looks after their health and family.

You said you would listen to the government, not "some guy on the internet" in reply to me. I just want to know what the material difference is in "advice".

I haven't said anything different to government "advice", except I don't think schools can practically keep students 1.5 m apart, which got me accused of being an alarmist.

The only "advice" I've given for now is to support the idea of social distancing (which the PM just said), and get your flu shot (again, don't listen to me on that, get your GP's opinion. I doubt theirs will be different from mine in that regard).

I agree I am making predictions about what the government will do in the future. I don't know how right they are. I hope I'm wrong and coronavirus is contained.

But I predict schools will close by next week. Which will make the PM look pretty stupid as today he said closing them would increase infections.

Nothing, difference is lockdowns so far have been what, a month at most? You're acting like we may all still be inside by this time next year, with 1/4 of the population dead, yet somehow all essential services still operating. Forgive me for not listening to alarmist bullshit. We've had what, 3 deaths still? Unless I've missed something. We haven't had many deaths, the number of cases isn't growing exponentially (it's already starting to flatten out, instead of going say 80 new cases in a day, then 160, then 300, 600 etc.), there's still exactly 0 confirmed cases in my area (Riverina/MIA) and there's nothing to day why our country will suddenly become like Italy instead of like South Korea with the precautions we've taken.

If you had said things like we might have to lockdown for a few weeks to a month and then re-assess, you might look like you have some credibility. But you go straight to insisting that it will be a post-apocalyptic winter with everyone required to stay in doors yet have no idea how the f**k people would actually survive like that - without working, without income etc.

I will follow what the data says so far. If the data changes, I will change my mind, but it does no good to insist on such alarmist rubbish.
