It is quite incredible that we are the only country on the planet playing live sport at the moment. People involved in the game are putting themselves on a pedestal saying how brave and resilient they are when in reality, the NRL are as desperate and pathetic as a European tourist in a poor country begging for money to further their travels. Competitions richer and poorer than the NRL have all shut down because it is the right thing to do. What exempts the NRL, AFL and the A-League from following their community responsibility?

Rugby league is a business, I get that. But, we are part of a worldwide health crisis. With flu season yet to really come upon us, our health system is very much at risk. So, in regards to the NRL crying poor if the games are not played, I say tough titties. By continuing to play a game that is in total opposition to the minimal interaction world we are now in smacks of desperation and irresponsibility. The NRL are also putting players families at risk by playing on.

Rugby league won't die. Our administration may go broke but the game won't. The game would absolutely rebuild itself no matter what damage is done over the next few months.

I agree that the game will survive, and playing games puts players, their families, and the community at risk.

But I was going to say this same thing in response.

Really, the NRL are just mirroring what the government are saying; "We have to keep apart a bit, and that will cost a bit, but we absolutely will continue living life as normally as possible, because otherwise it will cost too much money." Something like that, anyway.

Targeting NRL crowds was just low hanging fruit.

Look at NBA. No games players are getting it due to being in the street. Players are safer than 95% of the rest of us working NRL as an employer is making it as safe as possible

He has the same chance as you or me of being maybe less due to NRL protocols

This is a group of around 500 players, plus another couple of hundred support staff. They are all required to isolate themselves from the outside world, and if they all do that there is no likelihood the virus will be spread on the field. The problem is with wives and children bringing the virus home from schools, workplaces or shopping centres. With NRL players being very fit and young, the worst thing that is likely to happen is that the competition might have to be closed down, which is what you are advocating doing anyway. Some coaches are older and at greater risk, and will need to be kept more at arms length. Wayne Bennett is a pretty fit looking chap and doesn't appear to have respiratory issues. You'll note that the AFL have also decided they can play under similar conditions.

Maybe if the NRL were flush with funds they wouldn't have gone this way. But they're not, they've been told they aren't getting public money and so they have every right to attempt to continue trading. Unlike the likes of Qantas, they aren't really in a position to tell their people to just piss off until things get better, as they require them to train and remain ready to play, even if the sport does have a hiatus. So they have to continue to pay them at least part of their contract. Your tough titties aren't really helpful.

Should already be there. Im in Spain and i have friends in China. I can really say that you guys are not taking this seriously enough.

Honestly though, i could see the NRL getting an exemption to the lockdown. Sports are so important for keeping the plebs relaxed, i think it would be more important during a lockdown than ever...

Spain has a lower testing rate than NSW, they have gone into lockdown but the limited testing over there is a concern! countries with the lowest growth rates are the countries that are testing then aggressively following up contacts to break the transmission cycle!

Furtgermore, it has been widely reported that Italy and Spain DID NOT take social distancing and isolation seriously.

That is going to be the problem here as well.

It’s concerning the amount of people out and about carrying on like everything is normal and not adhering to social distancing protocols (just look at Bondi the other day or pretty much any pub/cafe around the country).

The public are being told one thing about the seriousness of the situation, but then they see footy players running around hugging each other every tackle, and it definitely sends mixed messages to the public.

Pretty sure Wayne has actually been dead for about 10 years and is getting around weekend at Bernie's style. No risk there.

I would say we have limited testing here. WHO says to test everyone showing symptoms. The advice here is stil just to test people who have been overseas, or been in contact with a covid19 patient.

Workplaces and directive from gov is to stay home, don't socialise and go to work if your showing any symptoms. But won't test you unless you meet their criteria above. We are approaching fly season in Aus and when that ramps up are they expecting people to stay off work for 2 weeks to a month if they get flu and can't be tested for covid19?

The gov has to ramp up testing to test every person showing symptoms. Should have been ramping up all the industries involved in testing when this was starting in China, as soon as they had a test available.

I shake my head when I hear people in a place of power saying we are only finding confirmed cases linked to people being overseas or having been in contact with a person infected, yet those are practically the only people being tested.

That is going to be the problem here as well.

I've actually had to spend the last couple of days travelling all over Sydney. Places were dead everywhere, Penrith, Eastwood, Epping, the CBD was as dead as it is between xmas and new year! Then I had to go out to Bondi and Coogee and it was as busy as any other time I have been out there.

I think for the most part people are trying to follow the advice, but Bondi and Coogee really surprised me!
