The music video is the main reason. Makes the song so much more powerful. Plus Cash's emotion in his voice adds so much to a lot of covers.
Reznor's own opinion on it sums it up.

P.S. you gonna actually contribute anything or just rubbish everyone else's opinions like you always do?
LOL, have a f**king sook you weirdo :)

yeah hate to sing the same tune as others (pardon the pun) but id go with johnny cash - hurt.

Since I started this thread, I have looked through dozens of best ever covers versions lists.

It appears that Johnny Cash's "Hurt" and Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" invariably top those lists.

Pulp's original of Common People is very close to being the greatest song of the entire 1990s, and while Shatner's version is a lot better than his normal musical output it can't help but pale in comparison to the glory of the original.
Disco 2000 is the greatest song of the 1990s.

Also Cash did ' Wanted Man'. Written by Bob Dylan but dunno if Dylan actually recorded it himself.

Disco 2000 is the greatest song of the 1990s.

That is way up there too. Different Class was just a wonderful album.

Back to covers, The Futureheads doing "Hounds Of Love" was great (never really a fan of the Kate Bush version), and this one might be a bit iffy to some, but Stars on 54's pop version of "If You Could Read My Mind" is so much better than Gordon Lightfoot's original it's ridiculous.

Another cover I like....

Rammstein's version of Depeche Mode's "Stripped".

I used to bag the shit out of Rammstein but after seeing them live at the Sydney BDO back in the early 2000s, my mind was changed.

Hurt - Johnny Cash
Every cover ever done by Viktoriya Yermolyeva http://www.youtube.com/user/vkgoeswild
Easy - Faith No More
I Started a Joke - Faith No More
Twist and Shout - The Beatles
Helter Skelter - U2
The Great Pretender - Freddie Mercury
Turn The Page - Metallica
Wicked Game - Chris Issac
The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana

And I know people won't like these, but I like the fact that these covers adopted the unique sound of the band performing the cover
Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Limp Bizkit
One - Korn
Master Of Puppets - Trivium

Kind of covers but not really lol
Queen's live fast version of their own song We Will Rock You

not a huge metallica fan but loved their version of queens 'stone cold crazy' - was like the song was written for them.

also tool and their version of zepps 'no quarter' is awesome.

on the flipside - limp bikkies version of the who's 'behind blue eyes' is an absolute abomination. i wanted to kill them for that alone.
