Titans will give Frawley a golden handshake
Sam Worthington
Canberra Raiders back Craig Frawley may fill the void troubled Titan Chris Walker has left, the Gold Coast club said yesterday. Canberra recruited Frawley from the Brisbane Broncos in 2003. But injuries have hampered the 26-year-old since, and he has played just 22 first-grade games.
Titans managing director Michael Searle yesterday told The Canberra Times that Frawley's agent, David Phillips, had approached the Titans about a move north.
"I have spoken to his agent and he has expressed to me that he is keen to come back to Queensland," Searle said. "With that in mind we'll probably give Canberra a call next week and have a chat to [Raiders chief executive] Simon [Hawkins] and [general manager] Don [Furner] and see what their plans are for Craig."
Walker last week revealed he was suffering from depression after an alcohol-related incident at Surfers Paradise this month.
The Titans fined Walker, who remains on the club's books. He appears unlikely to play first-grade in the immediate future. He has entered an eight-week rehabilitation program.
That leaves the Titans short on outside-back depth and Searle said the Gold Coast was interested in handing Frawley a lifeline.
"He'd be on an incentive-based contract for us but we'd look at providing him with an opportunity if he wants to have a try," he said.
The 189cm centre/wing comes off contract with the Raiders at the end of this season. His first-grade prospects at Canberra seem slim - Phil Graham, David Howell, Adrian Purtell, Colin Best and Marshall Chalk are all established members of the side.
Furner said the club was open-minded about releasing Frawley.
"He's a good fella so we won't stand in his way," Furner said.
