Was just about to do a NZ in Pakistan game thread in the international section (for 3 ODI, 5 T20)

Players were about to play in the first ODI tonight when the whole tour was cancelled !!!!

Amazing stuff as it unfolded

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ew-zealand-1st-odi-1272196/live-cricket-score

2.30pm Oh! The entire tour has been abandoned because of security concerns.

According to an NZC release: "The side was to play Pakistan this evening in the first of three ODIs in Rawalpindi, before moving to Lahore for a five match T20 series. However, following an escalation in the New Zealand Government threat levels for Pakistan, and advice from NZC security advisors on the ground, it has been decided the BLACKCAPS will not continue with the tour. Arrangements are now being made for the team's departure."

This is from the PCB: "Earlier today, the New Zealand cricket board informed us that they had been alerted to some security alert and have unilaterally decided to postpone the series.

"PCB and Govt of Pakistan made fool proof security arrangements for all visiting teams. We have assured the New Zealand cricket board of the same. The Prime Minister spoke personally to the Prime Minister of New Zealand and informed her that we have one of the best Intelligence systems in the world and that no security threat of any kind exists for the visting team.

"The security officials with the NZ team have been satisfied with security arrangements made by the Govt of Pakistan throughout their stay here. PCB is willing to continue the scheduled matches. However, cricket lovers in Pakistan and world over will be disappointed by this last minute withdrawal."

2.05pm In normal circumstances, the toss would've taken place by now. There's still uncertainty in Pindi and we're awaiting an official update from the ground.

Muneeb Ullah: "@Muthu can you pleaseeee at least tell us what the heck is going on there?" --- We don't have an official update yet.

Naeem: " Whatever the reason may be, it's very sad and unfortunate for Pakistan cricket."

1.45pm Well, well.... there's a bit of chaos in Pindi. We're hearing that the players and support staff have been told to stay inside their rooms. Do stick with us for further updates from Pindi.

from the article above

bad bad aussie to blame... 😉

ESPNCricinfo quoted an unnamed Pakistan Cricket Board official as saying: “We're still in shock and disbelief at what has happened,.

“It's mind-boggling that we've been told nothing by NZC, that no information was shared with us about any threat. Until earlier today we felt that the mood among New Zealand's players was good and they were willing to play.

“We were confident in any case that we had the security protocols in place to ensure this tour would go ahead without incident.”

NZC would not comment on the details of the security threat nor the updated arrangements for the departing squad. There are 21 New Zealand cricketers on the tour which was scheduled for three ODIs and five Twenty20 internationals in Rawapindi and Lahore.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told a press conference the security threat was a conspiracy, “an attempt to damage our efforts for peace in the region”. He would not say which country was responsible for it.

Dawn news website reported Ahmed said the New Zealand team's security in charge [Australian Reg Dickason] spoke to government officials in the morning and informed them of a threat. When the officials asked for further details, the NZ security “did not have any”, he added.

When Imran Khan contacted Ardern, she told him the New Zealand government had “received intelligence that the team could be attacked when it steps out to go to the stadium,” Ahmed added.

“It is their decision. We had deployed heavy security for the team. Pakistan is a peace promoter in the world. And this tour was cancelled through a conspiracy. It is their [New Zealand’s] problem and what they decide,” Dawn quoted him as saying.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam posted on Twitter: “Extremely disappointed on the abrupt postponement of the series, which could have brought the smiles back for millions of Pakistan Cricket Fans. I've full trust in the capabilities and credibility of our security agencies.”

There was anger from some former top players, with Shoaib Akhtar labelling it “an unnecessary and uncalled for” decision to abandon the tour.

”NZ just killed Pakistan cricket,” he posted on Twitter.

Shahid Afridi tweeted: “On a HOAX threat you have called-off the tour despite all assurances!! Black Caps do you understand the IMPACT of your decision?”

Pakistan toured England across formats during the bio-secure summer of 2020

The chances of England going ahead with their proposed tour to Pakistan in October would appear to have receded sharply, in the wake of New Zealand's decision to abandon their ongoing tour due to a security threat.

England's men and women teams are currently due to play two T20Is in Rawalpindi on October 13 and 14, with the women due to stay on for a three-match ODI series as well. But, in the wake of New Zealand's decision - minutes before the scheduled start of their first ODI in Rawalpindi - the ECB have confirmed they are reviewing their plans, with a decision expected in the next "24-48 hours".

A statement from NZC said: "Following an escalation in the New Zealand Government threat levels for Pakistan, and advice from NZC security advisors on the ground, it has been decided the BLACKCAPS will not continue with the tour."

The aftermath continues

Australia due to tour Pakistan in Feb/March - good luck with that...

The PCB has been left in a state of "shock and disbelief" by New Zealand's abrupt abandonment of their tour to Pakistan. New Zealand Cricket called off the tour - their first to Pakistan in 18 years - minutes before the first ODI was scheduled to start in Rawalpindi, acting on a security alert from their government. That decision has led to mounting frustration and anger within the Pakistan board, as well as fears of how it may impact their calendar this season and beyond.

The derailment of this white-ball tour began on Friday with a 3am (Pakistan time) call from the NZC to the PCB about the security alert, which, 12 hours later, led to the cancellation of the cricket without a ball being bowled. ESPNcricinfo has been told that western security agencies became aware of a specific threat they deemed credible at some point in the last 36 hours which was shared with a number of governments, including New Zealand's.

Eventually that information forced a decision to call off the tour, despite a phone call between the Prime Ministers of the countries, Imran Khan and Jacinda Ardern, in which the former (in Tajikistan on an official visit) tried to salvage the situation. Soon after the first ODI's abandonment, a Rawalpindi police advisory citing a threat to the tour issued earlier this week emerged. It is not clear if this is the advisory NZC acted upon; the PCB say New Zealand had been made aware of two events in the city (a local bodies election and a religious procession referred to in the police advisory) and the schedule had been worked around them. Discussions between the PCB and NZC did not consider a venue switch to a neutral country, primarily because it was so late in the day. In any case, the UAE, Pakistan's home in exile for nearly a decade, is ruled out because it is hosting the IPL.

The PCB, and Pakistani authorities, are nevertheless frustrated that, despite repeated attempts, no information has been shared with them regarding the threat, as well as the fact that multiple reassurances as to the visitors' safety, and the state-level security provided to them, fell on deaf ears. They also claim that NZC security advisors on the ground, the ones on whose advice NZC said they leaned on to make this decision - remained confident in the security arrangements Pakistan had put in place for the tour. One Pakistan official also asked why, if a threat had become apparent within the last 36 hours, the New Zealand side still turned up to training the day before the game.

"We're still in shock and disbelief at what has happened," one board official said. "It's mind-boggling that we've been told nothing by NZC, that no information was shared with us about any threat. Until earlier today we felt that the mood among New Zealand's players was good and they were willing to play. We were confident in any case that we had the security protocols in place to ensure this tour would go ahead without incident."

There is plenty of anger too, as was evident first in the statement which pointedly termed New Zealand's decision to leave as "unilateral", and then in the new board chairman Ramiz Raja's tweet, in which he raised the prospect of the PCB taking this to the ICC.

Having hosted more and more series in Pakistan over the last couple of years, the PCB's anger and frustration stems from the fear of the precedent this cancellation now sets for the future.

The board will no doubt reach out to reassure the ECB, whose men's and women's teams are due to tour in October; NZC and the ECB employ the same security consultants - ESI Risk - on whose behalf Reg Dickason inspected security arrangements ahead of the New Zealand tour. The ECB has already said it will make a decision within the next 24-48 hours on the fate of the tour - which would've been their first since 2005-06.

Next year in February-March, Australia are due to tour for the first time in over 20 years, but the status of that, even at this early distance, looks shaky. New Zealand women are scheduled to visit this season and the men's side are also supposed to visit again in 2022-23, for a series of Tests and ODIs.

Be interesting to know exactly what information we acted on

our teams have been to close to bombings in the past so fair to bail imo, better to be safe than sorry

Also not sure why we, of all countries, are now sending B teams everywhere, something fundamentally wrong with cricket’s organisation atm

Probably come out one day, but the last thing you want to disclose to the world (and the terrorists) is whats going on and potentially blow your intelligence cover.

Fact kiwis didnt even go into any detail with Pakistan is huge , considering up to that point they went over there without security concerns right up to the start of the 1st ODI

Yeh.. this NZ team security boss made up the whole story just to p*** off Pakistan. There is always some tension in the north on border with Afghans moreso now if the huge influx of people fleeing Afghanistan are suspected to include extremists. Correct call by Dickason.

^^^

The name has never been gender specific

Doubt you will find any dictionary that say it is male specific

No problem last 20 years with womens cricket either as far as I know calling a batsman a batsman

I guess sign of the times
