Former NRL star John Elias cleared of match-fixing charges

JOHN Elias has today been found not guilty of match-fixing charges against him at Sydney’s Downing Centre.

In a verdict delivered just minutes ago, magistrate Peter Miszalski declared that the prosecution had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Elias was acting with inside knowledge when he placed $5500 worth of multi-bets on the Cowboys to open the scoring with a penalty goal in last year’s infamous fixture against the Bulldogs.

The magistrate also declared that police would have stood a better chance of gaining a guilty verdict had they run the case as a conspiracy including player agent Sam Ayoub and former Bulldogs prop Rayn Tandy, who were also charged with the same offence.

Tandy was convicted last month before the same court but has since launched an appeal

The magistrate also found that because Elias had elected to lay the wager in the form of multi-bets, he could not be certain that he would win as the court was unaware of the outcome of the other legs.

In closing the magistrate also dismissed expert evidence from chief NSW Racing steward Ray Murrihy, stating: “Even though Mr Murrihy is an expert in thoroughbred racing, I’m not sure that he could help me very much with what is here.”

“He has an opinion that he can keep to himself as far as I’m concerned.”

Ayoub is scheduled to appear before the same court next Monday, while Tandy’s appeal gets underway on January 16.

As long as you put your bets on a multi, it means you can never be found guilty of match fixing

Just read in the paper that Elias ' other bets were all short price favorites in AFL matches that all were successful.

Wow what a surprise , this is the oldest trick in the book to disguise a big bet with another @1.04 or something

I still have no f**kin idea how Ayoub can stay accredited whilst being charged with a fraud charge

I know he is innocent to proven guilty , but so was Tandy and he was at least suspended pending the outcome

To think that Sam is negotiating with 16 year olds for contracts is amazing

Why didn't Glenn munsie detail the % of multi bets that have the combination of

Head to head, head to head , head to head, first scoring play fg,

It would be minuscule the amount of bets in this fashion

No jail for ex-NRL player Ryan Tandy in betting scandal

AAP
January 13, 2012 11:21AM

FORMER rugby league player Ryan Tandy has avoided jail after he was found guilty of lying to the Crime Commission about the NRL betting scandal.

Magistrate Clare Farnan sentenced Tandy in Sydney's Downing Centre Local court today to a six month jail sentence by way of an Intensive Correction Order (ICO).

It is a sentence option that can include community service, strict supervision and possible curfews, depending on the conditions imposed by the court.

The ex-NRL player, 30, was found guilty of giving false evidence in January 2011 to the NSW Crime Commission about his betting activities with jockey manager John Schell.

The offence carried a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.

Magistrate Farnan ordered Tandy's sentence to start on January 20.

Tandy was acquitted of two other charges relating to evidence he gave the Crime Commission in its investigation of match-fixing.

The court previously heard Tandy placed a number of bets with a professional punter named Damien Flower through Mr Schell during a two-week period in 2010.

Questioned by the Crime Commission about when he had last used a bookmaker or "any other person who was gambling", Tandy replied he couldn't give a time because "it was years ago".

In October, Tandy was found guilty of match-fixing and was fined $4000 and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond for interfering with the outcome of a game between the Canterbury Bulldogs and the North Queensland Cowboys in August 2010.

He is appealing the decision.

It follows the issuing of a court attendance notice for one count of the same offence to a 21-year-old Merewether man on Tuesday 21 February 2012.

Both men are expected to face Downing Centre Local Court on 4 April 2012.

Inquiries by Strike Force Suburb detectives are ongoing.

I'd still like to know how there was no case to answer in the Melbourne Storm wooden spoon betting saga.

Very odd...

Meh, I had $10 on them at 17's. Had a good night out from it. Woke up, someone had made a post on the forum about them coming right in, jumped on them, half hour later into single figures then half hour later suspended. Wish I had more on it.

Based on what the previous outcomes have been in court surrounding this case, isn't this justa a waste of time and money?

Tandy got a slap on the wrist from the law and a life ban from the game.

Whats the worst that could happen to these two?

Out of all of this, we know that Tandy is a lowlife, we already knew that about Elias and Ayoub is a man of dubious character. Shocking. Absolutely shocking revelations there.
