The question was... "how many countries play Rugby League seriously?"
Despite the uneasy giggles, there are obviously more than three countries taking it seriously.
Naturally, if there are those who wish to rubbish the international game, that's their choice.

I'm not rubbishing the International game. The fact is though only three countries play the game at a reasonable high level. The rest struggle to keep up to the point that playing games against them is rather pointless. France have not been competitive for many many years.

World cup 2000
Going by these scores the rest of the world are geting pretty close...
f**k those Ruskies are a formidable bunch.
Bwaaaaaa Haaaaaaaaaa.

I've got an idea.
Why dont we fill all the teams up with Aussies and make up some rule about their distant relo's making them eligle.
I rather see the Sharks beat the merged scum than win a world cup anyway.

v England: won 22-2 / Twickenham (33, 758)
v Fiji: won 66-8 / Gateshead (4,197)
v Russia: won 110-4 / Hull (3,044)
Quarter Final: Australia 66 d. Samoa 10 / Watford (5,404)
Semi Final: Australia 46 d. Wales 22 / Huddersfield (8,114)
World Cup Final: Australia 40 d. New Zealand 12 / Manchester (44,329)

It may have come across as nasal but when you compare the PNG league to the NRL you can't possibly take it seriously.

I hope that one day other countries are able to compete with NZ, GB and Australia but at the moment when these sides are compared, it is a laugh. You can't take it seriously.

Now, Booyah raises an interesting point. When a PNG side plays a another PNG side, the level of competetion is pretty even. So we should take that more seriously?

Well I can go watch any A grade comp and find that same level of competetiveness. That doesn't mean that the Gymea Gorilla's should be part of the next world cup.

So my answer to the question is still 3. France are close but I wouldn't consider them a serious RL nation yet.

Don't worry I think Rugby Union is only just ahead on the world stage. The RU WC is almost as big a farce.

Try not to be a big kid Jimbo. People can discuss the subject without you butting in.

Fair enough sullyfan. Thanks for clarifying that. They are the top three RL nations if that's what you're trying to say.

I'd like to see the day that we have 6 or more top shelf competitive nations.

They recently played the Victory Cup in Russia and some of the match results were a little encouraging: France defeated NZ (NZDF) and Russia defeated GB for example. It's in a lower tier competition but promising results just the same. Russia actually won the Final defeating Great Britain (BARLA). And they apparently had 20,000+ for the Final.
Of course they're still a long way behind the top three (at full strength) but IMO, something which is definitely worth nurturing.

Yeah I totally agree with that Willow. It would be fantastic to have 6 top teams. I was just arguing that there wasn't. Seems you totally disregared my post though.

No, you're right McSharkie. I was just answering sullyfan first. I think he initially brought it up.

It's only in it's infancy but I reckon the Victory Cup will contnue to grow. I'd like to see Australia get involved as well... throw some money at it or have it televised so we all see it next year.
If you're interested, there's a link here to the Russian Rugby League website: http://rrl.ru/index_r.php
Obviously put together by someone who's English is better than my Russian. ;-)

That's actually a pretty comprehensive defeat by NRL standards. It is the standard that we must compare everything to aswell. So I disagree, that ain't very competetive.

Better than a 60 point drubbing but still not good enough.
