Cross to bear a season on sideline

Hate to see anyone get injured, but I don't think he is that much of a loss. Especially if Tolar is back soon.

Does it make anyone else sick in the guts seeing Ben Hannant running around with the Bulldogs on similar money Ben Cross is making at at the Knights, and completely outplay him week in week out with phenomenal stats and unbelievable work rate?

Does it make any one else sick in the guts that Parra are paying Cayless something like $400,000 but we have someone like Tolar on peanuts? Or that Willie Mason is on huge money for doing absolutely nothing, but we have a bloke like Taia flogging his guts each week for chump change comparatively.

Every club has players playing above and below their contract value.

What other front rower would you have signed for the 2007 season?

I'd have to get a list of uncontracted players. No idea.

It doesn't justify spending such huge money for a bloke coming to the end of his career who wasn't very good for the vast majority of it is all I am saying.

Burwood - come on dude, your talking about Cayless ( who plays almost every game ) and Mason who are long term stars of this game coming to the end of their careers, of course they'll be on good money.

Signing Cross on big money given his achievements in the game, was curious thats all...

His injuries don't come as a shock to me really.

At the end of his contract, it will be interesting to see what % of games Cross has actually played in comparison to the amount of Knights games during that time...

From the Newcastle Herald:

Cross - Bicep - Gone for the season
Mullen - Shoulder - In doubt for Origin 1
Rogers - Knee - Unknown
Naiqama - Hamstring - Unknown
Sau - Sternam - Unknown

Hurts even more that we lost...

Wow, what great news after a loss like yesterdays.

will be well less than 50% karma.

blaming a freak injury on his recruitment is pretty bizzare?

I don't exactly disagree with you Karma, but the comparison to Hannant was a bit silly considering Hannant was off contract last year, obviously if both were available at same time then id be angry if we got Cross over Hannant.

And Cayless never is or was worth 450k a year

To be fair Cayless' contract was weighted towards later in the contract - his average pay for the contract was not $400-450K a year...

Why didn't we just sign Petero Civoniceva. I don't think he is on that much more then Cross is.

I know its not his fault he gets injured and opposition teams single him out and target him but Cross really hasn't lived up to expectations.

When is Simpson coming back?

Oh not blaming the injury, but you do tend to find these type of injuries seem to happen to players who are a bit older thats all... I mean its a freak injury to Buderus too, but he was around the same age of Ben Cross...

Also, both playing for the Newcastle Knights?

Its not something you see around the league very often, something in the training? Too many weights close to the game?

Just interesting thats all, and age seems to be the common denominator there.

I'd have no problems with long serving guys getting paid big money. He was NZ captain at various times, and when he came into league, a junior footy star, so his starting price would have been hefty from day one. He is at the end of his contract after all.

Its natural in most occupations if you stay in the same job, you tend to get paid more!

May have been a mistake by the Eels to sign him for that money for so long at the time, but its a bit different to putting him a long term contract in his mid 20's when he was NZ Captain, and the Knights signing Ben Cross at what was it, 27?, after he had achieved very little in rugby league.

Thats all Im getting at...

From what I heard we were close to getting Petero but then Panthers must have given him a much better offer.

Even if his average pay is lower, he is still taking up a considerable amount of Parra's salary cap this year. Can you imagine if the Knights signed Simpson up to a contract like that? I'd hate to think of the reaction by some people in here.

Are you suggesting you wouldn't prefer Nathan Cayless running out for the Newcastle Knights week in week out, playing more minutes and games than Ben Cross ever could?

Cayless hasn't been in great form this year, but that can be applied to the entire Eels team bar Hindmarsh.

I think you'd find Simpson's pay cheque isn't too shabby either.

So what if he runs out every week, these days he is going 5 hitups for 40m, stuff having 450k do that once per week.

I think theyre last weeks figures for Eels anyway, not sure on season avg.

If you go back to my original post you'll see that I am suggesting that every club has players that are playing above or below their contract value. It is nothing unique to Ben Cross or the Newcastle Knights. Once again the obvious point of a post has been overlooked to nit pick at something with pretty much zero relevance to what we are talking about.
