I had a Melbourne "Aust. rules" fan tell me once: "I like how the rugby league still play at the suburban grounds. It's much better than the plastic feel you get going to games in Melbourne!" Something to assess when trying to rid our grounds of the good old hill?

Not to mention there is no home ground advantage in the AFL when 2 Melbourne sides meet as they all now play out of the MCG or Etihad; home ground advantage only exists for them when they play interstate sides. Yes, those inner-Melbourne sides are getting larger crowds now compared to the '90s when those teams still played out of their local grounds, but home ground advantage and to a degree, tribalism, were compromised in the process.

Now, there is talk that the old Optus Oval/Princes Park may be redeveloped and used as the 3rd ground in Melbourne for Melbourne teams so that they can play their home matches there against low-drawing teams like GWS and the Gold Coast as it doesn't look so bad on tv with the plethora of empty seats in the background like they are with matches played at the MCG/Etihad. See, the empty seat issue isn't just something that's endemic to the NRL...

Hills at grounds are a good thing!
They offer a very relaxed atmosphere and are a culturally significant experience for the Aussie footy follower.

Granted when it rains it is difficult but just go and ask what a great time was had by the patrons on Leichardt's hill at the recent game against Manly.

It was awesome and the fans will keep coming back for the experience.

On the topic of ANZ Stadium that many have mentioned here, I went to the Knights/Sharks match at Hunter Stadium a couple of weeks ago. It was the first time I've been to a match there since 2008 (before the Western Grandstand was reconstructed). I sat in the upper tier of the Western Grandstand, very high up (2 rows from the back) on the 50m line and man, the view was perfect. It was like watching the game on tv, but at the ground.

I also sat in the upper tier of ANZ Stadium for the 2001 GF, and 2002 GF. The view at Hunter Stadium wins hands down. Not because ANZ is a much larger ground, but the point many have made up the flatter gradient of the stairs, as well as the fact the upper tiers are WAY too far back from the action. Even the lower tiers (which is category 1 pricing), the gradient is too flat compared to the one at Hunter Stadium and those famous soccer stadiums in Europe. So, this whole point about bringing the grandstands of ANZ Stadium further in, unfortunately, isn't going to solve the problem.

And regarding hills, as a Knights fan, I remember the days of the old Eastern hill. Those were some good times, spent many Sunday afternoons sitting alongside my parents on the hill. There was always a good atmosphere at what was then known as Marathon Stadium when there was 20k there, and you knew there was at least 25k minimum there when that eastern hill was packed like a can of sardines.

Although it feels nostalgic watching highlights of old matches pre-2004 when the hill existed and it was a sad day to be at that last match in Rd 26 2003 vs Cowboys before building the first stage of the Eastern/A.J Grandstand in the off-season, I understood that as much as I loved the '90s and everything about them (from the way life was back then, music, fashion, to the way RL was when I first started watching it back then), it was no longer the '90s, and building the Eastern grandstand - as well as getting the Western grandstand done up again - was one of the best things to happen to the ground. The facilities now are much better than I remember in the days of sitting on the hill. No long queues to go to the toilet or buying food, and also more corporate facilities available in both grandstands. Hunter Stadium would NEVER in a million years have also won the right to host other marquee events like the 2015 AFC Asian Cup matches had the Eastern hill still existed. A shame Australia didn't win the 2022 FIFA World Cup as we were in line to expand the capacity of Hunter Stadium had it been approved.

Fast forward now to Sunday afternoon where Manly played the Sharks and....Brookvale Oval is in DIRE need of a grandstand. I'd leave the Northern hill available for those hill lovers and young familes, but their crowds would definitely improve with reserved seating on the eastern side of the ground. Yes, Leichhardt Oval looked nice but it will never be redeveloped as the Tigers can only afford to play a small portion of matches there due to the high expenses of playing matches there.

Who gives a shit about a homeground advantage when theres only 6000 people there. "Tribalism" being linked to a stadium in the context of football is a nostalgic cliché.

Id rather see ANZ fill equally with Souths supporters and Bulldogs supporter than a half full belmore (because no one can get to the shit hole) with only Dogs fans.

And id say most people would agree with me...

Canterbury is relatively close to ANZ though. Souths would be better suited to SFS.
But when it comes to Manly, Cronulla and Penrith, they are 20-40km away from the main stadiums. The AFL clubs are all within a 10km radius of the main stadiums. It's nothing the same.

Souths actually prove that you can move away from your "spiritual home" and actually prosper. So what if they were born as a club further east, they draw an assload of fans to ANZ because they acknowledge their history but were by no means blinded by their history...

So forget about those 3 periphery clubs. That still leaves the Tigers, Eels and Dragons that could easily move 20 minutes up the road to a centralised stadium and benefit massively.

Eels and Tigers already play there. Maybe there would have been more at ANZ than Campbelltown on Saturday night, but Leichhardt on a Sunday probably would have got more than either.
Souths have prospered because they are finally winning. They would be getting the same crowds at SFS (opening game of the season would have got more most likely).
When Parramatta is still getting 10,000 or under for out of town teams then there's no use playing those games at ANZ. What's that going to do? Make it easier for Cowboys and Warriors fans?

Lol you really think all those people who attend afl games in melbourne live within 10km of the stadium? That would be some inner city density!

Carlton's population is 13,500 Carlton club has a membership of around 50,000!

Souths v Bulldogs - 44,000
Knights v Broncos - 21,000
Sea Eagles v Cowboys - 14,000
Dragons v Warriors - 13,000
Sharks v Roosters - 11,000
Raiders v Storm - 8,000
Eels v Tigers - 36,000
Panthers v Titans - 12,000

forecast of Sunny and 25 degrees for Good Friday in Sydney. Should really crack 50k again but based on crowds this year so far I won't get my hopes up. I think Eels/Tigers might disappoint slightly with Tigers having Farah etc. out.

I do find it absurd that having one player out (Farah) will affect a crowd that significantly considering both teams are in winning form. Two teams from West Sydney the supposed heartland of the game should show up no matter who is on the team list. In particular when there in winning form after a long period of downtime. Talk about fairweather.

Yeah, cause that's what I said.

The point is the AFL's situation with stadiums cannot be applied to the NRL. They are totally different situations.

Don't you remember when Ahmed Bajouri was injured and 20,000 less turned up for a Souths v Tigers game?

Predicted crowd was 30k, but Ahmed pulled on the night before, reducing the crowd to 10k.

Yes they are, melbourne has decent public transport, decent stadiums and a good city plan. Sydney doesn't. Shame our game ended up popular in Sydney and not melbourne.

Maybe the citizens and sporting teams of Sydney should campaign to swap places with the citzens and sporting teams of Melbourne.

PAX 26k for tigs vs eels, bought a family pass and a couple of adult GAs around 6pm. I expect it to hit around 40k. 30k of those turn up, few thousand walk up and it's looking like a solid crowd.

melbourne has no traffic. ive been in the CBD in "peak hour", my suburb in sydney is way worse.

its easy to get around melbourne because the city isnt built up like sydney, theres little traffic.

try being anywhere in sydney from 4 - 6 oclock.

or try going from the city to Paramatta after 6, and see the gridlock on paramatta rd.

and why should we swap it around. melbourne is dreary, much like the sport they follow

Sydney is the jewel of australia, much like the sport it follows
