AFL got more money and no Monday nights. Time for the NRL to put the fans first for a change. Expansion will give an extra game which will more than make up for the loss of games on a Monday night,

People watching at home are fans too. In terms of revenue those stay-at-home fans are arguably more important than those that attend games rain hail or shine.

This is a myth, clubs can earn more from fans than from the TV grant. Memberships, ground deals, merchandise etc all can contribute to a much bigger income than the NRL gives clubs in grants if they build their attending fanbase.

The biggest afl club makes (net)!$16million from memberships alone.

Which Club is that and please provide a link (and not just a Club entity saying so).

Friday onwards is forecast to be sunny in Brissy. As for ticket sales, I bought mine last night with a PAX of 28,531.

But the people staying at home are also buying merchandise, I mean I want bigger crowds too but this whole "you're only a fan if you attend games" shit is just that. And I say that as a season ticket holder for the Tigers and Penrith. You can't alienate the vast majority of people who WATCH Rugby League by telling them they're not fans.

There's lots of genuine reasons a clubs fans can't attend games. Work, geography etc but the NRL should not be creating barriers for those fans that do want to attend games. Converting Sydney's TV audience into members and bums on seats should be one of the nrl's top priorities for a whole variety of reasons.

Would we rather see a drop of 75k in TV audience and an increase of 15k in attendance for those games currently played on a Monday or Thursday night? I'd suggest we should.

I agree with you but we as a code are doing it wrong. We shouldn't be shaming people into coming we should be making live attendance the icing on the cake of watching rugby league. Then once we do that and get some of the expenses down ie food and drink more people will come.

Those AFL figures are pretty interesting, amazing that WCE can make $16M NET !! from membership...

More than some NRL teams make in Gross revenue

Sounds a bit dodgy to me... Maybe $16M gross revenue would be fair enough at say $400 pa x 40000

But how much does it cost to market, staff, sell, merchandise, promote, communicate, to 40,000 people...

The cost of staff, comms, printing, advertising, etc must not be properly accounted for,

Even if they gave away a $10 hat to 40000 people thats $400k gone..

Maybe Perth people are that desperate to be members, they don't need any impetus to sign up

talk to their supporters. most of the seats at subi are premium and above. there are not many seats available below that level. Premium membership is $605. there is quite a bit of bitching about this because Subi is a bit of a hole. the 3 tier stand has wooden benches for seating and this is sold as premium mostly.

they also have an 11,000 person wait list called "In the Wings". there is every possibility that they will be able to sell out the new 60,000 seat stadium on completion. So, if a member falls off they don't really have to do much to replace to them

that's why WCE do not care if Subi isn't full in match days. it just means some members haven't turned up, but they have the loot anyway. I think the AFL force them to sell 500 away tickets every week otherwise it would just be WCE supporters.

Penrith tell fans to turn up or lose games

THE Penrith Panthers have threatened to abandon their home ground of almost 50 years because of poor crowds and the NRL scheduling farce.

The most exciting young team in the premiership is averaging only 11,273 fans to Sportingbet Stadium this year — the second lowest in the NRL — and ahead of only the struggling Canberra Raiders.

The Panthers have not been scheduled even one Sunday afternoon game this year and have had to play on Monday nights four times, mostly in the rain.

Penrith supremo Warren Wilson says the club has been forced into looking at alternative venues, possibly interstate, to increase revenue.

South Sydney successfully took games to Perth and Cairns this year and made approximately $750,000 more than from home games. They also made a huge profit by moving another home game from ANZ to the Sydney Cricket THE Penrith Panthers have threatened to abandon their home ground of almost 50 years because of poor crowds and the NRL scheduling farce.

If that's the case we need to be in Perth.

yep.

some quotes to prove the point.

This is a Freo member in the 3 tier stand at Subi. "If you're lucky enough to get too many fatties sitting in your row, the space allocated to you via the painted white lines on the backrest shrinks, so just sitting involves more physical contact than a Melbourne player may encounter during a game. Premium Gold is what my seat is classified as, they're obviously taking the piss."

WCE supporters can get the following for $65

"PRIORITY ACCESS TO SEAT RESALE TICKETS
POSITION ON WAIT LIST TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR SEATING AT THE NEW PERTH STADIUM"

or this from a guy who had already been on the wait list for 6 years.

Received an email this morning from west coast eagles, paragraph below.

" In 2012, the loyalty of in the wings members was once again demonstrated with a 90% renewal rate. This, combined with a renewal rate of 97% among our season members, has meant very little movement on the waiting list, with the majority of 'In the wings' members not expected to receive a seat offer until the new stadium is completed in 2018"

so the Eagles are pulling 700K+/yr from people in the queue for a seat in 2018. money for nothing essentially.

they are the envy of every other club irrespective of code australia wide.

so yes, the NRL would probably go OK in perth if for no other reason than people might get to go to a game of something.

43000 season members paying $350-650 then they get nearly $1million from members waiting to become season members! One of the reasons dockers are doing so well is anyone new to Perth who wants to follow a team has to,follow dockers if they want to go to games.

Shows how poorly the Broncos are performing. All things equal there is no reason they shouldn't be as big as the Eagles.

Penrith more or less saying the fanbase isn't there to be in Penrith fulltime.

And lol @ the pipedream of a 35k stadium in Penrith. Will never happen. If there is a major upgrade it's going to Parra every day of the week. Parra has a bigger fanbase themselves and then you have the Wanderers and the better location.

Penrith needs to refocus on more realistic goals.
