Well we always hear the st merge fans talk about having the biggest fan base, only 12k to Kogarah is disappointing (like the dogs 13k in previous wks)

Fans don't have to live in Sydney to be included in the fan base.
12K was disappointing no doubt.

You serious??? i didnt know that, but dont you think a team coming first should be able to get more then 12k (same with the dogs, been disappointed with the last 2 crowds we have gotten) 12k is not good especially when they have a good suburban crowd, coming first and are playing on a friday night

the fact that Brisbane is a city with ONE team and St George have to compete with all the other Sydney teams doesn't affect things at all?? idiot.

look, fair call. its just that the 30k+ crowds are so much more awesome and appealing. 12k crowds are doing nothing for sydney rugby league. sydney crowds need to double.

being at a great stadium (or indeed a decent stadium) with 30k is so much better than being at a suburban ground with 10-18k.

I think people are going to continue to call this out about the nrl and sydney. Its a great shame about the state of the grounds in sydney, the homebush situation and all it entails, and the fact that attendances in sydney have always been poor and continue to be.

I think sydney needs to toughen up and become 'grander' in its sport in any way it possibly can. People often lament the fact that AFL exists and makes our crowds look crap right up front (as opposed to say, hearing about english premiership football crowds once in a while) and of course, sydney also suffers because the Broncos are the worlds most attended rugby club and surely have the highest crowd average....but you know kiki, and everyone - sydney needs to grow a pair and commit to lifting attendances and not just through memberships. Its times for the excuses to end.

I honestly don't know after the merger if there is genuinely more then 20k fans in Sydney that follow Saints.

The area has been decimated due to the cost of living and the influx of migrants - most people just don't follow rugby league, nothing can be done overnight there. Not saying migrants don't follow league, but the Hurstville area certainly don't.

The Sydney St.George fan base is wide spread and It has been proven we can get more away support to Parra or Penrith when it's a night game. With the split of our fanbase between Sydney and the gong, we can't manage to get both sides to the match on a Friday night due to logistics.

I belive as a general rule, there are certain matches in Sydney that should never ever get the Live TV match.

The afl never go for a live fta against the gate unless the game is a sellout. Same should apply to the NRL.
Another problem we have is Sat. games on Fox..
Storm home games always have this problem too as they always feature on Fox...live against the gate..
This surely keeps a lot of fans at home.

Yes we are coming first but everyone knew we were gonna kill the chooks. It's hardly a huge match. Against the dogs and sharks (1st game) it was sold out coz of the rivalry.

Meanwhile why do ppl go on about our merge but never mention wests tigers?? Such hypocrisy.

Poorboys it's easy for brisbane to get those crowds, one team one city. If we had less teams in sydney the crowd would be bigger.

Also why is no one having a go at roosters crowds? They have to have one of the smallest fan bases in Sydney (judging from crwds anyway)

Now there's a good idea.

Does noone understand that while individually the crowds are poor in Sydney, cutting clubs will also cut fans? This assumption that less fans > bigger crowds is rubbish, you're going to alienate thousands of people in Sydney!

People from Brisbane who are too young to remember when Rugby League had a soul in the city don't appreciate it. They're too impatient to allow financial realities finish off clubs in Sydney. It's the only way, and it's going to happen soon. Memberships are increasing, and once the financial environment improves, 5 or 6 clubs will leave the rest for dead.

eliminating teams for a higher crowd overall makes no sense.

are people going to think: now that *a sydney team* are out of the comp im going to go more games!

Exactly. BRL clubs used to get about 5k through the gate on average in the 1980's. That was 8 teams in a city of barely a million people, for an average of 20k a week, or 40k a fortnight. The Broncos now get 35k a fortnight in a city of nearly 2 million people.

I've got no problem with survival of the fittest. It's a shame Super League came along because we'd probably be down to about 7 clubs now, and with hardly any of the bitching.

Hardly any need to call him an idiot as he had a very valid point. It the risk of playing devils advocate, having 9 teams competing against each other in Melbourne doesn't seem to have much affect on their crowds. Nearly 78K at the MCG last night will attest to that playing a game that doesn't come close to ours.

It was a sh*t crowd last night at Kogarah against 2 Sydney sides and no matter how much you try and dance around it with piss poor excuses will change that fact.

Excellent crowd in Brisbane. Compare that to the one in Sydney, which looked like 12,000. I know the Roosters are bottom of the ladder, but St. George Illawarra are coming first. Poor form. Add that to the fact that Brisbane is outside the top 8 and the Warriors are doing no better. Brisbane once again showing up Sydney.
:sleeper: What a stupid point to make. Completely different locations.

Oh the old "I'm right, I don't care about what anyone else says" argument ...

People make this grand argument that Sydney has a population of 4.4 million and should be getting full houses to every RL game.

FACT: Sydney has the most migrants per capita, primarily from non-RL nations. People with no interest in RL.

FACT: Sydney, while having a bigger population than other cities, also has a more crowded market and therefore more competition for crowds. What actually opposes AFL in Melbourne? AFL is Melbourne, Sydney's more than just RL.

FACT: Sydney has 8 clubs, Brisbane 1. Of course Brisbane's crowds are going to be bigger. They only get 12 games a year FFS!

like what? rooting each others bums?

i cant think of any other events that "compete" for crowds down there.

Sydney really is the arsehole of Australia

In Sydney it might not be viable. In a regional area where events like that do actually draw crowds, it was in direct competition being less than 2km away from the stadium. People on the Central Coast would have had to make a decision between the two, and others would have stayed away to avoid the congestion when both events finished, at the same time as each other.

But that's right, excuses are only allowed in Queensland.

I think next year this thread should come with ready made Sydney crowd excuses so the poor guys down south don't have to go to the memory bank every weekend.
