Play Aus v PNG on a Saturday night in Townsville and you get a sell-out.

Play Eng v NZ on Sunday night (7pm kick-off) in Newcastle and you get a similar crowd to what they got on Saturday night.

Great scheduling yet again by the organisers.

My question is why are ANY games on Sunday night? What a horrible time slot. Saturday night, Sunday afternoon... even Friday night would have been better. But Sunday night?

I totally agree.

They'd probably have the hide to use the TV excuse for Sunday nights, but that will not wash with fans who have found Sunday night as the worst night for watching these games on a delayed Channel 9.

Woeful scheduling and broadcast situations throughout the entirity of the this world cup.

It's been a bloody good tournament but Love and his merry men and stuffed up important aspects of it big time.

When the Super Pool games and times were announced, it was under the provision that each game would be shown live on Channel 9 at those time slots.

Honestly, shown live, Sunday evening, nationally, 8pm, is one of the most lucrative time slots for TV, so I can understand why they conceded a little bit on crowds for TV ratings.

What is poor, is that the RLWC group didn't hold Nine to this contract. If Nine were going to show the games delayed, 4pm or even 6pm Sunday would have been far more appropriate for crowds, and 7pm on Saturday.

I was at newcastle and there were very few locals about.

The majority of fans were english touring groups. I saw a fair few kiwis who had either travelled from sydney or the newcastle NZ community. Then there was a sprinkling of knights jerseys.

the 10k empty spaces should have easily been filled by Novacastrians, as the rest of the RL world did its bit.

But hasn't it been like that throughout the comp, with lazy 'NRL only' locals not bothering to turn up? Disgrace.

I think that the grounds that got a match should have offered 10 dolar seats to season ticket holders of the respective teams.

Kills two birds:

1) Gets crowds up
2) rewards membership

Is there an official crowd for the Ireland V Fiji game? The only thing I can find says exactly 8000, is this correct?

"The disappointing 8224-strong crowd"?

 That journo is a bit confused.

I know I am in the minority here, but given the stadium's capacity and the significance of the game in terms of the semis, it IS a disappointing crowd.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the WC organisers had sh!tloads of time and sufficient radio, tv and print advertising to assume a crowd of 18-20,000 should have been there...

Should have been more games in Melbourne, 36K against the Poms is still the best crowd so far and that was against the AFL international rules game and Melbourne cup weekend.

What State is the home of Rugby League?

Agree totally. It was a woeful crowd and you just know that had say Fiji played Namibia at the same ground in the RU World Cup, a crowd of 18-20k would have been expected which is a shame because we all know union is viewed as an afterthought on the GC.

It all boils down to promotion and the organisers have done nothing to ensure the stadiums are near-full. Showing a couple of ads with Cameron Smith holding a trophy is not going to get people out to the minnow games. Something far more creative and involving of the general public was needed.

When you learn that Colin Love and his merry men decided to go against valuable blanket radio coverage on the Faifax radio network, for half-hearted care-factor stuff on the Maquarie Network, you've really got to wonder if they wanted people to hold an interest in the tournament at all.

Same with TV. Sign a contract then allow Channel Nein to do what they god damn like with the coverage because "they're the experts".

Disgraceful.

I expect at least 20,000 for the Aussie vs Fiji and 30,000 for the Kiwis vs England with 50,000 for the Final.

That should give us an overall average of: 16,256
