Interesting Yak that Sydney has really pulled its weight in terms of crowds, much to the Sydney-haters displeasure no doubt.

I think the problem with Sydney here is the same as in the NRL, a lot of people go to games but because there's so many the averages are crap. Also, take away the Aus v NZ game and the total more than halves.

More games should have been played out of Sydney imo, but the question is where? Cairns and the Sunshine Coast are the only two places I can think of, making it pretty obvious RL in Aus needs to seriously look at Perth and Adelaide.

Qld figures are low because a) Australia havn't played yet and b) no games have been played in Qld's biggest city.

All in all they're pretty decent figures.

Honestly teams like Ireland, Scotland, France and so on should have been taken out to the bush, areas which don't normally see top class football.

The regions would have almost adopted the sides, and the crowds would at least be on par with what they got at their listed venues.

Some venues:

Lavington - Lavington Sports Ground (Capacity: Supposably 25K, more likely 15K)

Coffs Harbour - Coffs Harbour International Stadium (Capacity: 20K)

Wagga - Equex Centre (Capacity: Meant to be around 12-15K) Brand new facility as well.

Thats just three in NSW I can think of, there are others in Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Parkes which all hold 10K+

Add in for Queensland, Quad Park on the Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Ipswich and Toowoomba even. Would have been great for those regions.

What kind of population do those towns have though? Would they be capable of filling the stadium?

That's exactly what needs to be thought of. Travelling fans only bring in so many.

9,720 turned up at Bluetongue last night (more IMO, but that's another discussion), which is half the capacity of the stadium, and 3% of the population of the area (9k into 320k). While an unfair comparison, only 2% of Sydney's population attended the Grand Final at ANZ Stadium at full capacity (80k into 4m).

Look at these petty excuses from the qlders, our average crowds are 4000 higher than qld, but you still have a go at sydney.

Coffs can get f**ked. They get NRL trials every f**king year and when they got City/Country they stayed away in droves.

And, alas, we wouldn't get bigger crowds than the 6-9k they've been getting in Sydney/Gosford/Canberra etc anyway. I doubt Qld country would either. The capacities of these venues are often vastly exagerated too.

I was disappointed with the final figure announced at Gosford.

It was a good crowd and came through well on the TV. I was expecting around 11-12k to be announced.

So which towns could realistically have hosted a game?

Cairns - Already 2 games in North Qld
Toowoomba - maybe
Sunshine Coast - Really need a rectangular ground! How hard is it?
Coffs Harbour - As stated before, have stayed away from games played there
Wagga - Does anyone actually live there?
Perth - no RL presence whatsoever
Adelaide - same as Perth
Darwin -

Crowd looked great, though colour of the seats blended with the crowd so that may have helped.

Perth and Adelaide probably should have gotten games.

Don't worry Qld averages will still be highest once a few games are actually played in Brisbane.

The English fans are only just starting to arrive as they are here for the finals. Still reckon it will be an England Aus final.

Cairns - Already 2 games in North Qld If T'ville only got 10k for a super pool game it's hard to see how Cairns would have fared any better.
Toowoomba - maybe Athletic Oval would barely hold 8k even if they could attarct that many
Sunshine Coast - Really need a rectangular ground! How hard is it? Is Quad Park not rectangular? If not it's false advertising. But I don't know if it's all that big anyway.
Coffs Harbour - As stated before, have stayed away from games played there They shouldn't get another game EVER after City/Country
Wagga - Does anyone actually live there? It's the biggest inland city in NSW, but still not worth it
Perth - no RL presence whatsoever Not true. They should have got the England/PNG game.
Adelaide - same as Perth Maybe should have got a minor game but probably wouldn't have done any better than the venues chosen
Darwin - Same as the country venues really, only slightly bigger but with less RL
So the answer is that only Perth would have been a better venue to those chosen.

The Crowd at Gosford sure seemed a lot fuller than 10000 and was Extremely Loud.

Not bad for a Wednesday night though.

Quad Park fits 12k and "is large enough for a full size AFL or cricket game."

I get the pun, but it's Stockland Park now anyways so.. yea..

Had the Gosford game been played Friday or Saturday, it would've pulled 14-15k. 8pm on Wednesday, anything about 5k was a brilliant result.

That's not bad at all and considering the only real advertising for this comp has been the comp itself the ranking matches should be growing slightly as well.
Makes me excited for all future Cups if we can build on this tournament by tournament. Actually, it makes me excited for the last few games of this tournament...

Beating '95 is possible because we have a couple of extra games, though they are only minor ones. It rests on the semis really. As for 2000, well it was dismal but there were heaps of games so while the average was paltry the aggregate was higher than you'd think.
