Can someone please explain to me why the Eels have their points back on the NRL ladder? As I understood things, they would be reset to zero, and then able to play for points going forward (so they'd still have the chance to make the finals, but not keep their points).

Because the Eels still have the option to respond to the breach notice. It's due process. Think of it as being charged with a crime. They've been accused, given the evidence and now have the option to respond before being sentenced.
