and today we have the former pink poofs player and AFL journo writing articles telling us how wonderful his sport is compared to RL

no idea why this drongo has his articles in the RL section http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/james-maloney-deal-sparks-call-for-draft/story-e6frexnr-1226208507148

The guy's an A grade spanker.

A draft won't work in the NRL because if a player is drafted to a team he doesn't want to go to, he can go to England or Union and get decent coin.

The draft works in AFL because if a player doesn't like where he's been drafted to, his options are to drop back to state league and play for burgers.

Surely a player who nominated for a draft though would be bound by some sort of contract which binds them to the NRL if they were picked.

Besides EA's point, we've also seen the draft overturned before remember.

Anyway, why do people see a draft as such a positive?

Last time I checked.... The sport with Free Agency has a FAR closer and more competitive competition than the one with the draft....

Having now read that article.

"While there is no ill will from his New Zealand Warriors teammates and the club have consented to James Maloney's wishes to move to Australia, it is the fans that suffer."

I'm sure if Auckland pull off the title this year the fans won't give two shits where he will be playing the following season at the time.

Its a much better run sport ED. There's no denying that.
Disagree strongly. The AFL have better spin - thats about it.

Think about it. League is the most watched sport in Australia, beating AFL by a whopping 12 million viewers last year. How the hell did that happen when they have more games on FTA, they are always the first sport mentioned in news bulletins, and their worst scandals involved a 17yo tart and a player snorting lines (compared to entire clubs cheating, gang rapes, oral sex with animals, players dumping in potpants or shoes, mid game postate examinations, CEO's doing a runner and teams being death ridden left right and centre).

The AFL has a draft - completely denying players a say in where their future lies. Not to mention the most botched attempt at a new club - and the most unwanted side - in Australian Sporting history.

Our administration - for all it's faults - craps all over theirs.

The draft won't work in league. Too much external competition to maintain control over the player pool - plus it goes against the ethos of the game about trying to have locals play for their local club, state and country.

I'd rather see some kind of late November early December trade & contract window.

I think we've seen over the years that contracts aren't all that tough to break and the draft has already been overturned in court once in the Terry Hill case.

Now lets put this in perspective Loudy, The NRL season is two weeks longer so thats 16 more Games to begin with. We then include our 3 SOO games which are our highest viewed games with the grand final. We will also include a Test match and a City Country match and I am not sure you are including Tri Nations. Thats 20 odd games more a year.

Perspective????
How many more games do the AFL have on FTA tv,mostly in prime time shown into 5 capitals.
RL is shown twice a week into 2 capitals at decent viewing times,& the only other game on FTA is delayed & stuffed full of ads.

AFL have a huge advantage , viewer friendly wise,so it evens out a bit by us adding our rep ratings.
Plus is it our fault that they have no REP games?

The figures will be the same again next yr,we will smash them again ,even with all games live on PAY ....It will cannabilise the 7 ratings.

All fair points that had not crossed my mind. I dont care whether we win or lose though as their is room for both sports nationally. I enjoy both sports and can quite happily watch AFL if league is not on Tv.

Some great points made there.

They have a massive advantage and you're right, it's not our problem that the AFL don't have any rep fixtures.

It's all part of the package.

We had 192 + finals.

Lets not forget we also win most weeks, and our Foxtel ratings smash theirs.

They had an interstate comp, which, because it could involve 3 teams, has the potential to be a better comp than ours. They also invented the Origin format. Their attempt at rep football went to sh*t.

I say this not to bag them, but to remind people just how good we have it irrespective of our admin. Our game is resiliant beyond belief when you consider where we were in the 1980's and what the game has gone through since. I think a lot of the inaction that some people blame the NRL/Gallop/whoever for is just wise people letting the resiliant old game run it's course. We have seen the big bags of wind running AFL and Union with all their media hype and spin. How come we have grown and they haven't? (OK - the Super whatever concept has been great for Union- but mainly at the expense of club rugby.)

AFL was closer to national domination when the Swans and Bears were new than they are now. Union is worse now with teams in 5 capitals than when it was with just the Schute Shield, Campo and the World Cup.

With that in mind, (not to mention the laughable GWS farce) anyone who can see AFL is better run, or ahead of us, must be trolling. End of story.

I am not trying to make excuses with anything I am just giving my opinion. I am a league fan who appreciates AFL not an AFL fan making excuses.

Both games could learn from each other. What the NRL does well with their TV Scheduling is that only one time throughout the weekend is their more than one game on at the same time.

The AFL on the otherhand each round has games scheduled at the same time which will directly effect TV Ratings.

The NRL I think could also learn from the AFL in the way they handle their Grand Final week.

How about re-doing your numbers?

And add in their pre-season cup which is televised.

Then re-do your post which was wrong. And by the way, the actual numbers were easy to find so screwing that up leads people to believe that you're not what you claim.

As for you appreciating AFL, who gives a f**k? It's an unco-spazfest followed by people who shouldn't be allowed to procreate.
