Interchange shame for Blues prop

June 18, 2004

NSW prop Jason Stevens admitted last night he felt "embarrassed and disappointed" at playing just 19 minutes in the Blues loss to Queensland in Origin II.

After being brought back into the starting side after a three-year representative absence, the Sharks veteran played only a bit part in the game – prompting speculation he will struggle to hold on to his spot for the Sydney decider.

Stevens was at a loss to explain why he had such limited game time but will seek out Blues coach Phil Gould over the next few days to find out why.

"I'm obviously disappointed and embarrassed," he said.

"I wanted to play more and felt I had a lot more to contribute but that's the way it goes.

"I haven't had a chance to speak to Gus [Gould] and there is no point blowing up about it.

"I just want to get some feedback from him."

Stevens said he was under the impression going into the game he would be on the field for as long as the Maroons prop Shane Webcke was out there.

"I was under the assumption that was how it was going to work, but it didn't pan out that way," he said.

"I think I only got around five minutes in the second half, so I was a bit surprised when I was called back off.

"But in saying that, I'm just part of the team and I was more disappointed for the fact that we lost the game."

Asked about his prospects of playing in the series decider, Stevens said: "I'm not going to worry about that now. I'd love to play but I am not a little kid any more and it [missing out] is not going to ruin my life."

Sharks coach Stuart Raper said he found it hard to understand the reasoning for the Blues' treatment of Stevens.

"I'm disappointed for Jason and the fact that we didn't have him last weekend and they only played him for 19 minutes when he is a starting prop," Raper said.

"I don't know what the thinking is. Maybe they should just have a three prop rotation, but you are asking the wrong bloke about that.

"The upshot I guess for us is that he will be as fresh as a daisy on Sunday and I can assure you he will be playing a lot more than 19 minutes."

Good to see Stuart getting in there and questioning the Goose's coaching. He also points out that we really could have used him in Canberra. Well done Stu.

There's more, too...

Gould under attack

BY DEAN RITCHIE

June 18, 2004

NSW coach Phil Gould was under siege last night on four separate fronts following the brilliant but controversial State of Origin match in Brisbane.

Gould came in for heavy criticism from Queensland Premier Peter Beattie after walking away from the field and into the Suncorp Stadium dressing rooms before the fulltime siren. Secondly, QRL delegates called for Gould to be censured for comments he made about referee Sean Hampstead after the Blues had slumped to defeat.

At the post-match media conference, Gould said of Hampstead in relation to the Origin decider in Sydney on July 7: "He should be as far away as possible. He's had his shot."

But the Gould attacks were not limited to Queensland with the Cronulla Sharks expressing shock that former Test prop Jason Stevens had been given less than 20 minutes game time.

Gould also came in for heavy criticism on talkback radio and from Daily Telegraph readers. While Billy Slater's miraculous try will enter Origin folklore, the post-match wash-up has centred on coach Gould.

Premier Beattie told Queensland Parliament that Gould's surprise departure – given his side was behind by just four points – had provided both joy and amusement for Queensland supporters.

"I reckon the best thing about last night was to see the NSW coach disappearing up the tunnel," Beattie said. "I have to say that's the best view of him – his back."

Premier Beattie took umbrage at Gould's post-match criticism of Hampstead.

"He was blaming the referee the last time I heard," Mr Beattie said.

Talkback callers in Brisbane and Sydney flooded radio stations yesterday expressing shock at Gould's walkoff minutes before fulltime.

The same theme was present in emails, calls and faxes to The Daily Telegraph.

QRL managing director Ross Livermore was angry that Gould called for Hampstead to be sacked.

"We felt Gould went overboard on a couple of issues," Livermore said.

"But he's employed by the NSWRL and it's up to them whether he should be censured.

"Gould has one game to go – it will be Custer's Last Stand."

The NSWRL is unlikely to take any action against Gould.

NRL Referees Coach Robert Finch said: "I would agree with his [Gould's] statement that the referee didn't impact on the result."

Gould told 2KY's Big Sports Breakfast why he walked out early.

"There was a minute to go. I wasn't unhappy with the players. I wanted things to go so well for Brad Fittler," Gould said.

"At the end of the day, that was important to me."

Sharks coach Stuart Raper said he found it difficult to understand the Blues' treatment of the experienced Stevens. "I don't know what the thinking was," Raper said.

NSW and Queensland will look at minimal changes for Origin III in Sydney.

Trent Barrett will push for the NSW five-eighth spot but selectors may feel obliged to stick with Fittler given his courageous decision to return and help NSW.

Winger Luke Rooney may be under some pressure to retain his position. There are suggestions Luke Lewis could switch to the wing with either Matt Cooper or Mark Gasnier coming into the centres.

Roosters forward Michael Crocker will return from suspension for Queensland, most likely at the expense of Corey Parker.

EVERYONE is giving it to him!

George Moore has just been carving Gould up on the John Laws show. Replaying clips of interviews where he just contradicts himself from one sentence to the next.

Peter Beattie..."That's the best view of him. His back!!!" LOLOLOLOL!

Just sent this in on the Telegraph link referenced above

It was a joke the way both Stevens and Waterhouse were used. In a game as fast as that one all the forwards should have been rotated in a fashion that would have had fresh players on the paddock. Stats show that in the limited game time stevens had he made on average around 9-10m per run where as kite made just 4-5 yet was given much more game time. It may also have been Steven's last SOO game after being a great player for NSW for 10 odd years but there were no favorites shown by Gould like there was for Freddy.
Absolut Joke

As much as I hate Gould, and now I live in Brisbane, he is nothing in comparison to the way the rednecks up here carry on when Qld win, so I hope NSW get up again
