1 win away from locking up the division. Who would have thought that 6 weeks ago.

Sorting Out The Cowboys’ Playoff Picture

ARLINGTON, Texas – Strictly speaking, nothing was officially decided Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

Thrilling as it was, the Cowboys’ overtime victory against Philadelphia doesn’t secure them a spot in the postseason – but it comes awfully close.

“I guess it gets us one step closer,” said Dak Prescott. “It’s as simple as that, but our focus is on next week and that is Indy. We’re worried about that.”

That’s a fantastic answer, and it’s not Prescott’s job to determine the NFC playoff picture. That falls to the rest of us.

The win improved the Cowboys to 8-5 on the season, putting them two games ahead of the Eagles. They also hold the all-important tiebreaker over Philadelphia by virtue of sweeping the season series.

It’s also important to note that the win gives them an important leg up over Washington, as well. With the Cowboys and Redskins having split their season series, Sunday’s win guarantees that the Cowboys will finish with a better division record than their Washington rivals – an important designation, since that’s the second criteria used to break a tie within the division.

So what does all of this mean, exactly? It’s pretty straightforward.

Firstly – win and they’re in. The Cowboys have three games remaining on the schedule – at Indianapolis, home against Tampa Bay and at New York. Win any of those games, and – thanks to the tiebreakers -- they’ll have the necessary win total to lock down the division crown.

Not that it’d be preferable, but they actually don’t even have to win another game. With the Cowboys holding those all-important tie breakers, a single loss by both Philadelphia and Washington would lock it up. And with the Eagles playing both the Rams and the Texans in the next two weeks, not to mention an Eagles-Redskins matchup in Week 17, that looks fairly likely.

Predictably, this isn’t going to register much with the powers that be. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was asked what it meant to him to be in this position with three weeks to play, and his answer didn’t betray much excitement.

“Not much. The biggest thing we’ve got to do … there’s a ton of stuff in this game that we’ve got to clean up,” he said. “We’ll do that as coaches tomorrow and the players will come back in on Tuesday and get back to work. This was a good win for our football team, but our eyes are forward.”

Again, nothing wrong with that. That step-by-step mantra has gotten the Cowboys this far, improving from a 3-5 also-ran to an 8-5 contender.

But for those of us on the outside looking in, the playoff picture is taking shape – and it’s looking awfully favorable for the Cowboys.

Amari Cooper following his 10 catches for 217 yards and three touchdowns against Philadelphia, has been named the NFCs Offensive Player of the Week.

This is Cooper’s second NFC Offensive Player of the Week of the year award. Following on from from his performance in the Thanksgiving Day game against the Redskins where he had eight-catches, 180-yard and two-touchdownes.

Cooper becomes the first Cowboys receiver ever to win this award twice in a season and the first offensive player at any position to win it twice since Tony Romo in 2007.

Raiders owner Mark Davis was asked Wednesday at the NFL owners' meetings about his thoughts on Oakland's trade of receiver Amari Cooper to the Cowboys now that he's had so much production on the field the last month for Dallas.

The Cowboys traded their 2019 first-round draft pick to the Raiders for Cooper in October. In Cooper's six games in Oakland this season, he had 22 catches for 280 yards and one touchdown. In his six games in Dallas so far, Cooper has 40 catches for 642 yards and six touchdowns.

"In the future," Davis said, "we might be saying, 'Damn!'"

Davis said he's not surprised by Cooper's success in Dallas "because he was a great, great player. We always had the fastest guy on the field no matter what. I think [my dad] would have loved Amari, but it just didn't work out in our system."

Looking to be a wise move by Jones & Garrett

With three games remaining in the regular season and the Cowboys appearing poised to make the playoffs, they could be looking at a reunion with a former player.

NFL Network's Jane Slater reported via Twitter that the Cowboys are discussing the possibility of bringing ex-safety Barry Church back to Dallas.

Church played for the Cowboys from the 2010-16 seasons and has spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before they released him on Friday.

If Church clears waivers with no team claiming him within 24 hours from his release, the Cowboys could then negotiate with him.

I wouldn't say no to Church's return to the Cowboys. He was a solid safety during his previous time with the team. If the Cowboys have a weakness with their defence it come at the safety position.

You didn’t needed to watch today’s game to know how ordinary Dallas was. The score line of 23-0 paints a mighty picture of how the Cowboys played. Forthe first time in 15 years the Cowboys were kept scoreless. Whilst Luck was held founder 200 yards passing and no touchdowns, the. Cowboys defense could not stop Colts running back Marlon Mack from running for 139 yards and 2 tds. No sacks, no interceptions. Worst defensive performance of the season so far.

Five Cowboys players have been named to the Pro Bowl this season. They are CB Byron Jones RG Zack Martin, LT Tyron Smith, DE DeMarcus Lawrence and RB Ezekiel Elliott. Martin, Smith and Lawrence are listed as starters. Whilst Jones and Elliott are listed as reserves.

Congratulations to all five.

Sammie Coates has been given chance after chance in the NFL despite failing to produce consistently. The former third-round pick was traded by the Pittsburgh Steelers before his third NFL seasons to the Cleveland Browns after two underwhelming seasons and a very public Twitter feud with Martavis Bryant over the role of rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster. He spent the entire 2017 season with the Browns, but caught only six passes. He had been a member of the Houston Texans for most of this season, but had only one reception and was released earlier this week. It would have been fair to assume that his NFL journey was over at that point, but his tantalizing athleticism has enticed another team.

Calvin Watkins of The Athletic reports that Coates worked out for the Dallas Cowboys on Friday. It is hard to take that news as anything other than pessimistic for the potential return of Tavon Austin. Austin injured his groin earlier in the season and has been out for several months. But he had been practicing in a limited capacity and the Cowboys outwardly hoped that he could return to the fold before the playoffs. With only two weeks to go, bringing in Coates seems to indicate that they don't think he'll be ready.

Coates has the one thing that Austin has always brought to the table: speed. His official time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine was 4.43 seconds, but he has been timed lower than that. At Auburn, he was treated almost exclusively as a deep threat for that reason. But he doesn't have a similar physical profile to Austin, and therefore wouldn't be used in exactly the same way. Austin is only 5'9'', whereas Coates stands much taller at 6'2''. Physically, Coates looks like a No. 1 receiver.

But he has never been able to play like one as a professional. His routes are inconsistent, he drops passes and he didn't fit into the Steelers locker room particularly well as the Bryant spat proved. If anything, the Cowboys would be signing Coates for depth. They have operated just fine without Austin offensively recently, and they won't try to fit a round peg into a square hole. Coates is not the gadget player that Austin could be for them, so they will likely stick to Jourdan Lewis as their designated jet sweep recipient and Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and Cole Beasley as their top receivers.

Beasley isn't healthy either, but he practiced in full on Thursday and should be fine for the playoffs. That would be the only explanation for this beyond Austin pessimism. Some wide receiver on the Cowboys roster is in danger for the postseason. That is why they'd bring someone in so late in the season. In all likelihood, that player is Austin.

Coates would bring size and speed, but little else

Coates had a great month or so filling in for Bryant years ago, badly broke his fingers then never played the same again, decent special teamer. The crap with Bryant was all Bryant. Worth a look to stick on the end of the roster.

Things have gone a little quiet on this story. I would have thought if they were going to sign him they would have done so by now.

Thanks for allowing me to watch you guys cry in UHD on amazon prime. I really enjoyed watching the 37-9 game. Watching the clapper and Dez cry to the refs was glorious. His half time speech was inspiring.

A tough game tomorrow against the Rams. LA have quite a good home record of 7-1, whilst Dallas have a not so good away record of 3-5. The Rams have a much better points scoring record at 527-339, whilst the Cowboys have a better defensive record at 324-384.

For Dallas to win they will have to be at the top of their game. Certainly better then they were last week, especially with their points scoring.

D didn't show up today. Allowing nearly 500 yards and to only lose by 8 was a miracle. Iirc Rams only punted once, every other drive was a TD, FG or missed FG.

Still pretty happy with the season overall. Just hope we don't do our usual shit year after good one.
